❤️🐽❤️ Claire- a happy update! ❤️🐽❤️

Remember Claire? We were trying to find an inside home for her a couple of months ago. She was having extreme mobility issues and was facing euthanasia. Our vet determined that living outside was making her condition worse and she could not continue with that lifestyle. We brought her to our team member Jess’s house, where she has has been living that spoiled inside-pig life, received consistent pain management, started a new medication for her arthritis, and she’s doing AMAZING! This video is from breakfast this morning. The “before” video in the comments is from earlier this summer when we first took her into foster. She’s very sensitive about the silly way she’s blowing her coat, so don’t mention that to her. 😂
Claire will eventually be available for forever-foster, so if you’re looking for the sweetest inside girl to add to your family- forever!- please reach out to us.

UPDATE: Transportation Found! 💛

🚨 TRANSPORTATION HELP NEEDED 🚨
Coolidge, AZ to Fort McDowell, AZ

We need help moving 3 pigs to their new foster home. This little family consists of a mom and dad, as well as their baby boy. Mom is pregnant! You may remember us posting about the Coolidge pigs, thankfully we found placement for this little family!

The city of Coolidge Animal Control has given the owner 30 days to rehome the pigs or they will euthanize them, the 30 days started a few weeks ago. We're running out of time to get this family out of there! The foster is pretty flexible with drop off availability. We can have a team member go to Coolidge and help get the pigs crated.

This little family will need to transport in 42" plastic crates, one for each pig. The baby boy is smaller and can fit into a 36" plastic or wire crate easily. If you have crates you can use that would be amazing, if you don't we can try to locate some for you to borrow.

If you can help, please send us a message!! 🙏🏼

🐽🐽 Seeking Dog Crate Donations 🐽🐽

Hi everyone,

We’re reaching out to our wonderful community for support. AZ Piggy Network is in need of plastic dog crates to be able to continue to transport pigs. We unfortunately can't use the wire crates to transport as the pigs will break through the pan and fall through the crate 😩 If you have any used plastic dog crates that you no longer need, we would greatly appreciate your donation! 🙏🏼

SIZES NEEDED:

⭐ 42"
⭐ 48"

If your crate is missing the hardware that connects the lid piece to the bottom piece, that's perfectly fine! We use zip ties most of the time anyways. We just need the plastic crate and the crate door!

🏡 DROP OFF LOCATIONS:

🐖 San Tan Valley:
30911 N Karen Ave. San Tan Valley, 85143

🐖 Phoenix:
2939 E. Earll Drive Phoenix, 85016

You're more than welcome to do a porch drop off at both of these locations! 😊

Dependant on your location, we might be able to pick up the crate from you if you're unable to drop off at our locations.

Your generosity will make a significant difference in getting pigs safely to their homes or foster homes!

Thank you for your continued support,

AZ Piggy Network Team 💛

🏡🐽 FOSTER HOME NEEDED 🏡🐽
San Tan Valley, AZ

Meet Ted! 😍

This little fella is 5 months old and is in need of a foster home. Ted isn't neutered but will be once he's placed in his foster home. He has the cutest chunky little face!

Ted was bought from someone then dumped in the original owners backyard without their knowledge. Ted is one of the kiddos from the roaming pigs of Coolidge that you may have heard about. Once he was back with his pig family, they all attacked him leaving him pretty chewed up and hurt. 4 pigs ganging up on poor little Ted, how scary and depressing for him! 😭

One of our team members took him home temporarily on an emergency situation to get him out of that situation but he cannot live in a bathroom for long! We need a foster to show Ted love and compassion. He's currently terrified but I wouldn't expect anything different right now. He's tolerating touch but obviously still very nervous. Ted will come around quickly to loving touch and kindness, I'm certain of it! 💛

🔴 Requirements to foster Ted: If Ted is going to be an inside piglet, he can be an only pig. If Ted will be living outside, he would need to go to a home with other pig friends or you can foster his super cute chubby brother as well! Piglets are much more enjoyable when they have other pigs to hang out with and they're so much happier! Both boys are not neutered but will be once in foster.

🐷 If you can foster Ted, please send us a message! You must reside in Arizona to foster. If you're new to pigs, that's perfectly fine, we're happy to teach you the ins and outs of pig care and behavior!

🐽✨ Looking for a Foster 🐽✨
Mesa, AZ

💓Say hello to Charlotte!
This sassy girl is around 4 years old. She loves frozen strawberries and vegetables. She is very talkative and loves her blankets. She is mostly fat blind and will need someone to work with her on her diet. She has a hard time getting around due to her weight. She also hasn't had a lot of interaction with people and will need someone that can be patient with her. She isn't spayed but will be after she gets to a healthy weight.

🚨 She is in need of a new home ASAP! She was abandoned by her previous owner and left to fend for herself when they moved out of the home. The new owner of the home has been caring for her but knows she deserves more and can't provide that to her. She lives outdoors, and her current containment isn't secure. She escapes sometimes where she is exposed to 5 dogs! She hasn't been around other pigs or farm animals before.

❤️🐷If you can help give Charlotte a better life, please message us!

📍 You must reside in Arizona to adopt or foster.

💜Looking for a foster or foster to adopt💜
Mesa, AZ

Meet Scarlett 🌸

This sweet little baby is approximately 7 weeks old and looking for a family of her own. Sadly, her current owners were misinformed about dogs and pigs together and are in seek of a new home for her where she will be safe & loved.

Ideally we would love for Scarlett to go to home where there is another pig or somewhere that is open to eventually adding a friend for her (pigs do SO MUCH better in pairs).

This little lady is not yet spayed but will be once she is old enough. Once spayed she can officially be adopted.

She is an indoor piglet and successfully uses her litter box.

If you are interested in fostering or fostering to adopt her, please send us a message.

Update: Happy, happy news- After reading this post Tator’s dad knew he had to find a way to keep them together- for both of their sake. He was able to find a home where he and Tator are both welcome. We are so incredibly happy for both of them!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
———————————————-
❤️ Meet Tator Tot! ❤️

This sweet angel is 1.5 years old. He is a neutered, indoor/outdoor pig. He lives mostly indoors but he enjoys his daily time outside! Tator is an emotional support animal and extremely close with his human family. According to his current owners, Tator is friendly, loving, funny and happy. He can be a bit vocal at feeding time like most pigs 😂.

Tator’s best friend is currently a tortoise. He also loves cats and he’s done well with small dogs (supervised only). Tator has not been around big dogs, so we are unsure how he would do.

Due to unforeseen circumstances and no fault of Tator’s, he must be rehomed by the end of August. This is going to be a devastating loss to him, so we need to find him a family who will be understanding while he adjusts to his new life and mourns the loss of his current family.

If you are interested in giving Tator a forever home, please send us a message for more info.

Name: Tator Tot
Age: 1.5 years

🛑🛑🛑🛑‼️ HELP….PLEASE‼️🛑🛑🛑

You’ve seen the pictures, heard the story and read our multiple pleas for help… Some of you have graciously stepped forward to offer up a space at your homes to foster these starving babes back to health and happiness.. and we are incredibly grateful for you!!

BUT… we have fallen short of our goal and another herd of urgent pigs has just been added to this already desperate situation…

We still need enough homes for 10 of the starving pigs - we’d like them to go in pairs of 2 or more and if you’ve been holding off to see if we get enough offers, NOW is the time to come forward, WE NEED YOU, THEY need you… They have all been seen by the vets, treated for parasites, fecals have come back negative and they’ve been eating pig pellets without issue for a couple weeks now… They really just need more of the same, lots of love and spoiling and when they’re a good weight and given the “all clear” by our vets, we will spay and neuter and get them adoption ready! If you can provide a shaded space, shelter from the wind, rain, sun and eventually the cold, clean drinking water in a container they can’t tip over, a kiddie pool or wallows for cooling them, and secure fencing to keep them contained and keep predators out - Then we would LOVE to hear from you. If you love animals but you’re not familiar with pigs, that’s quite alright, we are available around the clock to answers questions or address concerns, we will cover all medical and maintenance expenses (ie:hoof/tusk trims), and if you need something to complete their space, please don’t let that stop you, there’s a good chance we can provide that as well.

IN ADDITION: We need to act quickly regarding a family of 5 pigs that needs placement - we suspect pregnant mamas, and we also know they are all intact and will need to be spayed and neutered. Although these pigs don’t appear to have any health issues, we have not had our vets out to give exams at this point - but we will as soon as they are placed in foster homes and easier to work with. (We will run a separate post for them with pictures - but please don’t hesitate to message about them as well)…

Please share!! Please act!

Interested in fostering or adopting a pig but not sure where to start?

We created this quick little guide, to help you determine if fostering or adopting is right for you and a little bit of information about basic pig care.

The first thing to determine is if you are able to have pigs where you live. Some cities do not allow them, other cities have limitations on the number you can have. Most HOA‘s do not allow them, sometimes people will try to scoot around this by registering their pig as an emotional support animal, however that does not trump HOA bylaws, unfortunately we get numerous surrender requests from people who thought they wouldn’t get caught with their pig. Another thing to keep in mind is if you are renting your home. You may live in a city that allows them but you will need to have written permission from your landlord to have them there, this is for your protection and the pigs.

If you are unsure if your city allows them, please send us a message and we will be more than happy to help.

Once you determine you are able to have pigs where you live, the next decision you need to make is what type of piggy would like to foster or adopt.
Some pigs are indoor piggies, meaning they spend a majority of their time inside, and only go outside to use the restroom and play. And then we have piggies that are outdoor only. These pigs have been raised outdoors and prefer it.

Outdoor requirements:
The minimum outdoor set up for an outdoor pig would include; secure perimeter fencing, a shelter, such as a dog house or a three sided structure they could use to escape weather such as cold & rain, they also need plenty of shade, this can be natural from trees or artificial from shade sails, access to fresh drinking water at all times, as well as a water source to keep cool, either a plastic play pool or a mud wallow. Please keep in mind that if you have dogs, this area needs to be separate from them. Dogs and pigs are not to be left alone together unsupervised. This goes for indoor piggies to, please have a plan in place to keep your dogs and pigs separate while you are not home.

Indoor requirements:
They need all the same requirements as an outdoor piggy for when they are outside. The inside of your home needs to be piggy proof. The same way you would if a new baby was just learning to crawl, ie: cords, cleaning solutions, litter boxes, access to food/dog food/cat food. We also advise setting up an area the pig can relax and observe while they learn their new family. And as mentioned before, a plan to keep separated from dogs when you are not home. Also, please be advised that not all pigs do ok with stairs. Some down right refuse to use them. So please be ready to make accommodations such as a ramp if your piggy needs to use stairs to get outside.

Feeding :
Pigs generally eat 2x a day, morning & night. They eat potbelly pig feed/mini pig feed. Some people will incorporate fruits and vegetables with their meals, or feed them a salad for lunch. At the bare minimum they should be eating the potbelly pig feed. It is also advised that if your pig does not have access to grass to graze that you provide them with a grass hay such as Bermuda or Timothy hay. Please avoid alfalfa. Hay is a wonderful source of nutrition and fiber for them.

Potbelly pig feed can be found at most feed stores and tractor supplies. And is relatively cheap and last for a while. A 50lb bag is anywhere between 15 and $25 a bag. That will last one or two pigs a very long time. We will be more than happy to help you figure out the amount of feed your pig needs based on their body condition.

Basic care :
Pigs require hoof trims, some more frequently then others, depending on the amount of outside time & activity they have. We have wonderful vets here in Arizona that are very knowledgeable hoof trimmer‘s as well as the farrier for Ironwood pig sanctuary. Any of them will be more than happy to help you when it comes time for your piggies feet to be done.

The number one thing we recommend that you always have on hand when having a pig is a digital thermometer. If ever you suspect your pig is ill that will be the first question either us or a vet will ask you, what is their temperature. So always good to keep one handy!

How determine if your pig needs a vet:
If at any point your pig ever stops eating, drinking, peeing, or pooping it is considered an emergency! And a vet needs to be contacted immediately!

Pig introductions:
Pigs are herd animals and do so much better in pairs! We hardly ever see behavioral problems in pigs that have the companionship of another pig.
With that being said there is a proper way to introduce new pigs to one another - we’d be more then happy to help you through this process.

Lastly, please keep in mind that pigs live on average to 15-20 years. They are a long term commitment and don’t handle losing their families well. So if you cannot commit to providing them a forever home, please considering fostering instead.

We always have a need for fosters. Some pigs will be long term foster commitments due to weight or health issues, some pigs just need a place to stay for a short period of time. Please let us know when inquiring about fostering how long you are able to commit to having them.

We got sooo many messages and comments last week when we posted the three abandoned pigs that needed a foster home… one of them had horrendously long feet and could barely walk… YESTERDAY they got their freedom ride out of that place and they’re living the lap of luxury in one of our amazing foster homes!!! Yay for these guys!!! But we are sooo thankful our hoof trimmer was making the rounds yesterday and although she was super booked up, she stopped on her way home and made the day perfect!!!

💔💔WE’VE NEVER NEEDED YOUR HELP THE WAY WE NEED IT RIGHT NOW💔💔

It is said that rescue will harden you… but I can absolutely promise, after all the years I’ve spent in rescue, this case made me feel like I’ve been kicked in the gut and I don’t expect it will resolve itself anytime soon…

I will warn you right from the beginning, these images are difficult to look at, but I’m begging you, please don’t scroll past it and please know, we don’t stand a chance of helping these starving and neglected pigs without your help..

We got a call about 25 pigs that needed our help - they couldn’t afford to feed them is what we were told.. they were dying, some were already dead, they didn’t have shade and hay was the only thing they could eat… it sounded bad enough, but to see it in person, we couldn’t have prepared to walk into the disaster that has been ongoing for far too long..

The pigs are skin and bones, some are near death, literally. Really small pigs that look like babies themselves, SUPER pregnant. Nursing mamas that stand no chance of getting healthy because the herd is so hungry, they chase these mamas around to nurse on them and get any kind of nutrition they can. It’s the middle of the summer in the desert, but these pigs are so malnourished, they have hair that won’t shed. No shelter, no shade, and if you’re in AZ, you know exactly the type of storms these poor frail animals have been living thru. No food, none! Just hay when they have it and that’s been going on for at least 7 months. This list keeps going and we haven’t even had the vets to see them yet…

Two members from our team went to assess the situation and try to get a handle on issues we’d need to tackle before we could move forward. They brought feed, shade, pools and when they approached, the overwhelming realization hit them like a brick wall - it felt like we were putting a bandaid on a hemorrhagic wound.

As the tears came, it occurred to them they would have to leave the majority of these pigs behind tonight, but they simply couldn’t leave them all.. They chose the 5 most critical, did what they could to feed, water and shade the pens, and brought the worst of the worst home.

❤️🐽THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN🐽❤️

We need your help in three main ways…

FOSTERS🐽FOSTERS🐽FOSTERS🐽
We need new or existing fosters that are willing to help by taking in 2 or more of these extremely starved, potentially sick pigs for an extended period of time and provide A LOT of TLC, a slow and steady diet that we will teach you how to do, allow us to send our vet out to your home or get them to our clinical vet, depending on the individual situation, possibly give medications and keep in close contact with the AZPN team on the progress or the set backs of your fosters. If you’re interested in becoming a foster or you’re already approved and can help, please don’t hesitate, message or text ASAP. (You must be in AZ and within a reasonable drive to Tucson or Phoenix or any of the surrounding areas and pigs must be legal in your area - if you’re not sure about the legalities in your city/town, we can let you know!)

❤️SHARING❤️SHARING❤️SHARING❤️
Please share this on your personal page, any AZ groups that allow it, and with others in the pig communities or groups that might be willing to help.

🐷DONATIONS🐷DONATIONS🐷DONATION
We will have an excessive amount of veterinary expenses - not only to get these pigs healthy, but they will all need to be spayed and neutered in the future. Financial donations are needed and would be greatly appreciated. The donation platforms will be listed at the bottom.

We can also use donations of the following:
* Shelters - dog houses, large igloos, sheds
* Rolls of shade cloth or shade sails
* Hog Panel and t-posts (lots of it)
* Bags of pig pellets/any mini pig feed
* Gift certificates to TSC, Home Depot
* Kennels 48” and 42” hard plastic
* blankets/sheets/dog beds

Thank you for your ongoing support - we literally couldn’t do this without you!!

AZ Rescue Team Saving Pig’s Lives

AZ Piggy Network has been created as a collaborative effort between Better Piggies Rescue and Ironwood Pig Sanctuary to make a difference in the lives of pigs across the state of Arizona. The alarming numbers of abandoned, abused, neglected, surrendered and stray pigs continue to grow and multiply every day, leaving our sanctuaries and rescues struggling to make room and available homes at or above capacity. With no relief in sight, a team of dedicated rescuers have come together to assist the community with re-homing, adopting, fostering, placement, vetting and transport in and attempt to keep pigs out of sanctuaries, rescues, shelters and in the safety of loving homes.

In addition to our rescue efforts, we have a team of pig educated and experienced people who are available around the clock to answers questions and give assistance with your pig(s), to help with things like pig introductions, diet, preparing for fostering/adopting, giving referrals for veterinary care, tips and tricks for training, behavior issues and problems you may be experiencing in your home with these incredibly smart animals. With the start of good positive information, it is our hope we can keep more pigs in their original homes and lessen the trauma they deal with when losing their families.

What can you do to support the AZ Piggy Network: The community plays a big role in our success and we are always in need of willing people to help with transporting, fostering, home-checks, education, and the sharing of factual information about the health and wellness of these amazing creatures we have all fallen in love with. The rescues and fosters in our community are in need of monetary donations, blankets, pig feed, hay and a variety of items year round. If you’re willing and able to participate in our rescue efforts, please leave us a message, send us an email or call/text us and we can tell you how to get started.

Thank you, the Rescue Team at AZ Piggy Network,
