Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary Babies in the snow
Happy Gotcha month Little Macc and Barak! The first of 9 calves (and two cows) we rescued in 2020-2021
One year ago, in early December, Little Macc joined the Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary - 10 days later (on December 14th) Barak was rescued and became sweet Rosie's second adopted son. Little Macc and Barak started our year of calf rescue. Between the Fall of 2020 and Spring of 2021 Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary rescued 9 calves and two cows:
- Rosie (16 year old Jersey cow surrendered to us because she was not pregnant and therefore could no longer be milked - 8 months later she gave birth to her miracle baby - Jeffie <3)
- Little Macc and Barak who became Rosie's adopted sons and have stayed here at Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary
- Cocoa who is part of the family at Kamp Kiki Animal Sanctuary
- Fender and Gibson who joined Tami and Bruce at Three Little Birds Farm Sanctuary
- Finnegan who is at Coveted Kennels & Sanctuary
- Chip who is at Pammie's Sanctuary (aka Fitkitty farm)
- Bella (2 1/2 year old cow who, after having her first baby before she was two years old, and then being milked for six months was being disposed of because she did not get pregnant for a second time)
- and finally the twins - Uri and Chaya - who were 'thrown in' when we picked up Bella because they were worthless. Uri and Chaya were adopted by Bella and stayed here Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary.
Rosie, Little Macc and Barak, Bella, Chaya and Uri all tell their stories on the Little Macc and Barak page. They are all part of the Jersey family, along with Jeffie - Rosie's miracle baby - at Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary.
These were the few we were able to rescue from ONE Canadian farm over a six month period. They were all taken from their mothers a few hours after birth. There were many, many more at this one small dairy farm that we could not save because they were sold for meat or being kept to replace their mothers when they go for meat).

"Remember me? I am Rosie. I am between 15 and 17 years old - no one is really sure. This video was taken of me the day I arrived at Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary in November 2020. I came from a hobby farm where, every year, they would try to make me pregnant, like all milk cows. It didn't always work. But when I did have a baby I always got really sick. They called it milk fever - what ever it was it would make me too weak to get up. They had to have the doctor come and give me a needle. And, by the time I felt better, my baby was gone and the farmers took my milk. Every year this happened and I was always so sad, but I tried to be nice, even when their children were learning to milk me, I was gentle with them. One year I had a girl calf and she stayed on the farm. I didn't get to raise her, but I could talk to her over the fence. Last year they decided that was it. When I didn't get pregnant they contacted some sanctuaries and told them I would be killed in a couple of weeks if no one took me. Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary gave me a home. I was the first cow here. I cried and cried for my calves every day from the sunrise until dark. I thought my heart would break. But then, Little Macc arrived, followed by Barak a few sunrises later (their stories are in earlier posts on Little Macc and Barak). And, I love them. Macc was here first so, he is like my son. I even started making milk for him. When Barak arrived, I would let him nurse too. The HuMom here gave them bottles because I didn't really have enough milk to raise a calf, but it made us all feel like a family when they nursed me. After they were big boys, it must have been 6 times of the round moon, I stopped them from nursing anymore. It was time. And, besides - I had a secret..."
It doesn't matter what you are, or who you are, as long as you are kind to others. <3

Post #20 of 20: Freedom and love <3
"In the nice weather, HuMom opens the gate at the end of our pasture and Mama Rosie, Auntie Bella, Uri, Chaya, Little Macc and I can go out into the big field - there is a creek and forest and pasture there. We are free to wander and play and eat. Sometimes the horses and ponies join us.
In the afternoon we go back to our own pasture, to nap in the little blue house HuMom built for Auntie Bella and the twins, or outside, under the trees, or anywhere we want. We do what we want to do, together, as a family at Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary."

If you look closely - all four calves are in this video (Little Macc wanders into the top left side, Barak is on the far right and Uri and Chaya are enjoying the creek).

"The vet came out and gave us medications to make us sleepy. While I was resting, she 'fixed' my boy. While she did his surgery I heard her say that many farmers don't want to pay for pain medicine and to make calves sleepy, so they 'fix' boys without any pain killers. My boy had pain medication at the surgery site and generally. After she was done with him she tackled my very long feet. She said that, when my little boy is healed, we can all go out in the field with Rosie, Little Macc and Barak! I am so excited - I will be able to run and play without stepping on my own feet :) "

"The vet came and 'fixed' us. HuMom said we had to have drugs so we would be sleepy and other drugs so that we wouldn't have pain - the vet said that most farmers don't use drugs at all. They just catch the babies like us and cut or crush their boy parts, then let them go again. HuMom said "No! No pain!" I think Barak feels a little extra sleepy right now, but we are ok. No pain."

POST #6 of 20:
I am only 5 days old. I was taken from my Mama when I was a few hours old. And, earlier today, the farmer sent me away with a stranger with a gentle voice. He didn't ask the new person where I was going or what would happen to me.
I don't know where I am. It is warm, and my space is bigger than the box I was in at the farm. The gentle voice human is here and another with a bottle of milk. And - wait - a Mama? Not my Mama, but there is a Mama here <3

POST #1 of 20:
My name is Rosie. I am 16 years old. The people who have been my family for the last many years just left me here. It is clean, I guess it's nice, but I can't find my baby girl. She is a year old. Have you seen her? At the home farm she was always in the stall beside me. I didn't get to take care of her, because the people needed my milk. They said there wasn't enough for them and my baby girl. So they fed her from a bottle and milked me. But I could lick her little face through the fence sometimes. Every year I had a baby. Mostly boys. They disappeared right after I had them. I don't know what happened to them. But my little girl stayed. Now, I don't know where I am. I don't know where my people are and I keep calling for my baby girl. Where is she?
