If you have a puppy in your home it is important to make keep a close eye on them as Christmas approaches. Between the tree, the presents, the food, and the visitors your puppy is going to be having a lot of new experiences, and it is important to make sure they are safe! The holidays are a magical time of year but it is also the time of year when vet visits increase. Which is why it is so important to make sure your pup does not get into anything they are not suppose to. Tips to keeping your dog safe are making sure your guests do not give them human food, put a baby gate around the tree, and ensuring your dog is secure as people come and go from your home. We hope everyone has a magical and safe holiday! 🎄

Focus is one the most important parts of training! If your dog is not focused on you then they are not listening to you. Focus or Watch Me, can be hard to teach dogs especially if they are easily distracted. So here are some tips to help teach your dog Focus or Watch Me (you can use whichever one you prefer as long as you consistent with it!):
1. Use treats! 🍖 Tap your dog's nose with the treat then bring it to your eyes, and when they are looking at you give them the treat and mark it!
2. Once your pup is consisently doing step one you can gradually move away from placing the treat near your eyes. This part takes patience but you will wait until the look you in the eyes then give a treat and mark it!
3. When your dog is learning to Focus it is important to start in a quiet environment with no distractions, and then work up to practicing outside or with added distractions!

Tips to Prevent your Dog from Begging 🦴
1. Feed Your Dog Before/During Your Meal: Be sure to feed them in a separate room. This technique can help manage begging by having your dog focus on their own meal.
2. Teach Your Dog to Place: When your dog knows "Place", they will understand that they have a designated spot they must stay during a meal. (Place is a great command for your dog to know and can be used in various circumstances)
3. Ignore and Redirect Behavior: It is important not to give in to the begging because your dog will then start to think that begging is an acceptable behavior.
We hope these tips will help you train your dog not to beg! 😊

Happy Thanksgiving 🦃. We hope that you and your family have a lovley day filled with good food! We are also wanted to remind you not to give in to the puppy eyes of your furbaby this holiday because Thanksgiving classics can lead to an upset tummy for pups! This because a lot of the dishes include onions, garlic, and other spices that are not dog safe. With that being said we hope you and your pup have a happy and safe day ❤️

Teaching your dog "Down" can be challenging task. I know that it was Penny's least favorite command to learn, and it is something we are still working on. The lure-reward method has been the easiest way for me to get Penny motivated to perform a command that is not her favorite. To use this method to train down you would hold a treat to your dogs nose and guide them to the ground. If your pup is being really suborn you may have then drag the treat forward to guide them into the position. After your pup is the desired position you can mark it with "Down", and give them the treat! 🍖
Ps. Check out the last sign to see Toph giving the perfect example of down should look like! 😊

🐾 Let's talk about Opposition Reflex! 🐾
Opposition Reflex is when your pup is pulling on their leash in turn forcing you to pull on their leash which inevitably end in an unwanted game of tug-o-war. This is important to address as early on as possible because if a puppy learns that pulling gets them what they want they will continue pulling throughout their life. Here are some tips to nip Opposition Reflex in the butt:
1. Stop walking when they pull, this technique requires patience but it will teach them that puling does not get them the reward of going where they want.
2. Teach your dog obedience cues such as "Heel", or "Steady"
3. Try calling your dog's name, if you take a step forward and call their name encourages to run forward to you.

Teaching your dog "Leave It" is important for their safety! If you happen to drop something in the house, or if you are on a walk and come across some trash that they should not eat "Leave It" can prevent them from eating something that could make them sick! 😷 Here are some tips to help your pup learn leave it:
1. Place a treat on the floor with your hand over it. Wait until your pup stops trying to get the treat, mark it, and reward them with a treat from the opposite hand.
2. Make sure the reward treat is a higher value treat then the one that is on the floor! 🍖
3. Be patient and be sure to practice the command with your pup consistently so they remember it!

Teaching your dog Sit 👩‍🏫 Sit is one of the first commands a new puppy learns when they start their basic obedience classes. Here are 3 tips to help teach your dog to sit:
1. Be sure to keep your hand signal/body posture consistent
2. Find what motivates your dog! For most dogs treats will do the trick, but sometimes play time with their favorite toy is what gets them to listen!
3. Be consistent! Just 10-15mins of training a day will do wonders to help your dog remember what you taught them! 🦴

Happy Taco Tuesday! 🌮 Penny is the queen of begging for leftovers/scraps from the dinner table. We have used the techniques of ignoring her, giving her a place to lay down when we eat, and feeding her at the same time as us to help reduce this. It is long process but so far it is working! We hope that you can enjoy this Taco Tuesday with no puppy eyes this week 🦴

Penny and I ventured out to our first pumpkin patch of the year this week! (Her first pumpkin patch probably ever) 🎃 She did so well during this venture, I was so proud! Some things that helped us make this trip smooth were burning her extra energy before hand, we did this by going to our local doggy daycare. Then when we were at the patch, I made sure I had lots of treats for her, and kept her leash short but loose. It also helped that she had her friend Indy there showing her the ropes! 🐾

Knowing the signs of a fearful dog is a very important skill. Not only for the dog but for your safety too! Fearful dogs may act in ways that seem out of character if someone does not pick up on the signs! Fearful dogs show signs that are the opposite of a happy dog. Their body is "Down, and Submissive". They make themselves look smaller, their ears are tucked, tail in between their legs ect. The signs of a fearful dog are very similar to an anxious dog! 🐾
