REACTIVITY REDEFINED
Although reactivity has other causes, many types of reactivity are triggered by the core emotion of fear.
The fear of whatever is making a dog feel unsafe, the fear of a valuable possession being taken away or the fear of a strange person or animal coming into their territory. Anxiety, stress, over excitement, over stimulation, feeling overwhelmed, trigger stacking, or a dog that is tired, in pain or even has chronic itching will often feel irritable and may be reactive in certain situations. When being reactive is successful in making the scary thing go away, it becomes a rewarding behaviour because it’s something that works and makes them feel better.
Reactive dogs are often misunderstood. A dog that is reacting is not trying to be difficult, they are having a difficult time coping with that particular situation and are trying their best to make the thing go away in the only way they know how.
It’s not easy to be the owner of a reactive dog. One of my dogs is reactive and I know how dogs like this can leave you feeling embarrassed, ashamed, angry or frustrated. Why do they have to be so difficult, why can’t they just behave normally? Everyone is looking at me, judging me, thinking that I’m a bad owner, have no training skills, can’t control my dog or have a unsocialised, vicious dog that shouldn’t be taken out in public.
As hard as it may be, we need to take the focus off how we as owners feel about their reactivity and focus on how our dogs are feeling and what is causing their reaction. Whatever it is, it’s not something our dogs can overcome on their own and we need to take steps to help them cope. Reactive dogs need compassion, understanding, management, force free, positive reinforcement interventions and decompression – a return to a normal, more relaxed state after a period of intense stress, psychological pressure, or urgent activity. These interventions take time and patience but are so important in helping our dogs feel safe and learn more acceptable ways of coping.
I have learnt through many mistakes, to recognise what triggers my reactive dog and take steps to either avoid those situations, provide enough distance, or provide her with an alternative choice where she feels safe and more in control. There will always be unexpected triggers around the next corner that are not within our control, but doing all we can to manage reactive triggers has so many benefits.

Pack walks (one handler to many dogs) offer many benefits for our dogs!

----------

-S&V have a maximum of 6 dogs per group.
-We offer 2 walks Monday-Friday @ 11:00 & 14:00.
-Our walks are occasionally taken to a secure field instead, allowing off-leash time for those with little to no recall.

Keep reading to learn more...

----------

Why do Pack walks work so well?
🐾 Dogs are descended from wolves however the instinct to stay together in a pack and the bond formed from travelling together are still in domestic dogs. Walking together actually seems to form positive relationships more readily than other activities.
🐾 Pack walks are naturally positively reinforcing - Dogs love to smell their surroundings, encounter new things and get exercise. Dogs therefore quickly learn to not pull on the lead, keep up with the pack and generally behave so they get to keep walking.
🐾 Pack walks allow dogs to walk alongside each other without often interacting face-to-face, over time this type of walking builds trust. Pack-walked dogs are consistently socialised in a structured way, that does not allow for problematic exchanges.

What are the advantages for the dog?
🐶Dogs learn from one another much quicker than they learn from us - Dogs that pull on the lead will see demonstrations of dogs walking without pulling. If one dog barks a lot, he will get shown a group of dogs that do not bark at every stimulus. (Of course, this can work both ways however that is why our groups are carefully chosen and each dog carefully positioned during the walk)
🐶 Even family dogs need regular training and exercise - Pack walks are an amazing tool to offer both of these things on days where time may be tight. The dogs learn to practise self-control, develop social intelligence and listen to the leader.
🐶 Pack walks result in a dog that is more relaxed and easy-going. While on a pack walk the dogs share a kind of energy with the handler and the other dogs. By belonging to a group and knowing exactly what they are supposed to be doing, it allows them to be calm and happy and for a lot of dogs, this is a big relief!

Introducing Evie! (And Vinnie)

————-

Nice to meet you 👋🏼

I am Evie, the owner of S&V Pet services.

I have been surrounded by animals my entire life.
I grew up on a sheep farm and was fortunate enough to have horses, chickens, dogs as well as almost every small animal you can think of (right down to stick insects!!!)

As soon as I was old enough I moved to dorset to pursue a career in horse racing.

In more recent years I moved back to Norfolk and rescued two dogs from Europe.
Sally came over from Bosnia and was thought to be deaf and Vinnie (pictured) is blind, he came from Bulgaria. They were the inspiration for S&V Pet Services.

—————

I offer various dog walking and pet sitting services.

My website will be launching soon but in the meantime, if you want to know more please drop me a message either on here or WhatsApp. You can also email me at [email protected]

If you would like to book a meet and greet you can do so via the link in my previous post!

We look forward to meeting you and your beloved pets!!

Love,
Evie, Sally and Vinnie
