Just wanted to give an enormous shout out to my girl Poppy. I've always been thankful for her protective instincts, but today she proved how much she's willing to do. She has an outdoor run, 6ft chain link. My husband and I were in the front yard and he went to massage my shoulders, but it hurt because my muscles were sore. I yelped and said no, then struggled to get away from him, but he was feeling playful and was holding me back from around my waist. Poppy lost her mind. She was coming to my defense for all she was worth. My husband and I went over to the fence to reassure her, but he "attacked" me again with my consent to see what she would do. She wasn't having it. Good girl Poppy!

With all of the puppies being posted I want members who aren’t aware to know... solid white puppies, puppies with white heads or ears are either deaf, blind or both MOST of the time or develop serious issues later.
Please ask for Baer testing! The vet checking the puppy over is not good enough. These puppies can pass hearing & sight tests and go deaf or blind later. And PLEASE do not spend money on puppies WITH issues unless it’s from a rescue, the breeders that produce & sell these do not need your money.
If you have an accidental litter, please contact a rescue to place any puppies you have with issues or contact us and we can put you in touch with a rescue. Accidents happen, but trying to profit from puppies with issues is unacceptable.
Thank you

Rules For Owning a hunting Dog

1. Spend time with them each day. You are their everything.

2. Don’t hide your excitement, let them see the kid in you.

3. Your expectations of a hunting dog are high but their expectations of an owner are higher.

4. Don’t sleep on it take them to the vet.

5. Go hunting with them at least one time just the two of you.

6. Tell your new friends about your old dogs.

7. Their falses aren’t the only ones in the field.

8. Judge your hunting friends by how they treat their dogs.

9. Always stop to pet them.

10. Stop walking, sit down you will see how much they love you. Enjoy it.

11. Treat puppies like puppies and treat your 12 year old like he still is one.

12. Know when to retire them and give them everything they want. They gave you everything they had.

13. Have patience when they are hard of hearing...it’s the games fault.

14. Show your boys that there’s reasons to be gentle in this world, dogs are just one of them.

15. You helped her down the stairs when she was young now help her up them when she is old.

16. Take the picture every single damn time. It’s worth it.

17. Enjoy their determination even when it’s not after what you expect.

18. When it’s time to say goodbye don’t leave his side. Hold him. He knows what’s happening and he’s happy you are with him.

19. Remember them, visit the places that made you both so happy. Think about her while you stop walking and sit down with her daughter on an October afternoon.

20. Understand that you can not fill the hole they left in your heart but remember them and they will be with you every step of the way.

Very impressive dogs and handler.

All of this and so much more. It's such a slap in the face when people ask you to lower the price on a puppy that you have put so much time and effort, not to mention sleepless nights into raising.

EDUCATION TIME!

No preamble this time. We’re getting right into it.

Breeding is traumatic. Read that again. Breeding. Is. Traumatic.

At some point when you breed you will experience trauma. It might be your first litter, it might be your fifteenth. If you breed with any sort of longevity…you will experience trauma.

You will lose puppies.
You will lose one of your girls.
You will lose both at the same time.
People will be cruel to your dogs and not all buyers will keep in contact no matter how much you try.

You will deal with human beings who won’t like you because you won’t sell them a dog, because you breed animals they don’t like, because they may be racist towards BIPOC, because they don’t like disabled people. Any number of reasons, really.

You will deal with the stress of vet bills when an unexpected whelping complication occurs. You will deal with overzealous mamas who get urine burns on their lips.

You will deal with animals you bred being sick, despite how hard you tried to avoid it. You will deal with upset owners who were expecting perfection because unrealistic standards are ascribed to breeders who health test and title.

I make no apologies for the dogs I’ve bred over the years. I have regrets and sadness over certain occurrences, but I am not sorry for the dogs I’ve created who bring their owners joy.

I have experienced trauma.

If you choose to breed, you will too. And you need to decide how much you can take.

I always add liquid to kibble

HYDRATION 💦

Hydrating your dog is something so simple but it's actually so overlooked and most people don't think about hydrating when it comes to meal times.

If your dog is eating a kibble diet, they are more prone to dehydration. This is because the dry kibble requires moisture for digestion. When your dog is not adequately hydrated, the body pulls water from the internal organs to digest the kibble and this can lead to the state of mild dehydration. Even if they are drinking throughout the day, the digestion process pulls water from their system after eating.

One of the best and easiest thing you can do as a kibble feeder is HYDRATE YOUR DOGS FOOD!

Adding water to kibble softens it for digestion and hydrates your dog's body systems.

Great options to hydrate kibble include
💧Filtered Water
💧Coconut Water
💧Bone Broth
💧Goat's Milk
💧Decaffeinated Green Tea (aids in cancer prevention)

Quick Tip - you can freeze all of the above in trays or silicone molds and then pop out a cube or two and melt with hot water at meal time!

*Always give your dog access to fresh water at all times

*Always rest your dog after eating any meal. Never exercise your dog immediately after eating due to risk of bloat

This happens so much

I see probably 15 posts a day of people struggling or rehoming their Catahoulas they got to be a couch dog. Not everyone needs a Catahoula. Please don't. This was a well written post and my heart breaks for the dogs and people who have to suffer from lack of research, education, and greedy breeders.

Genetic variance and percentage of litter turnouts.

What is genetic variance and percentage of litter turnouts?

Genetic variance refers to the diversity in gene frequencies. While percentage of litter turnouts. Refer to the number of puppies in a litter that have the particular genes the breeder was trying to obtain from a certain paring.

So why is this subject important to you as a potential puppy owner? On this site we do our best to present the truth about breeding and breeders. The more knowledge you have about a subject the better off you will be when it comes time to purchase a puppy.

Many breeders lead people to believe that all their puppies will turn out a certain way. This may be a certain size , have a certain conformation or temperament etc. or any combination therein. But this is impossible due to genetic variation. Some breeders (those with the knowledge to line breed) do have a great deal of control over what they produce but even then it’s not 100%.

This is why true breeders usually focus on the percentage of litter turnouts. To give you an example of one of the best breeders of the 20th. Century. I will point out the works of Lloyd C Brackett. He is considered one of the all time best breeders because his percentage of litter turnouts were 9/10 on the bloodline he developed. This means he had some litters in which 9 out 10 puppies ended up being finished show champions with outstanding Health etc. most great breeders still fall short of his numbers.

So what does all this mean to you the potential puppy buyer? It means that no breeder of any breed of dog on the face of the planet can produce puppies in which they all turn out to be an exact certain way. No matter what some breeders may lead you to believe. Their will always be a chance of genetic variation this is something that no breeder is immune to. When you see the dogs a breeder produces these are usually the ones they wish you to see not necessarily an average representation of what they produce. Genetic variation will present itself in different ways such as size, conformation or temperament etc.

We due our very best to present the truth about breeding and breeders. In hopes that you will be able to make the most informed decision when it comes time to purchase a puppy.

So what can you do to increase your odds of getting the puppy with the qualities your looking for? There some things you can do!

1. Look for a breeder that line breeds and has years of experience using the selective breeding process. These breeders will normally have a MUCH higher percentage of litter turnouts. This will greatly increase your odds of getting your perfect dog. Keep in mind that a breeder can never be 100% certain of a puppies final adult size, working temperament etc. We can only make educated guesses as compared to other current puppies and the results of what past breedings have produced. While I consider myself pretty good at making these educated guesses I’m by no means perfect. I’ve seen huge puppies whose mother had great milk turn out to be very avg. in size as an adult. I’ve also witnessed the runt of the litter turn out to be bigger than Hero as an adult. While experience does allow me to make pretty consistent guesses I’m by no means perfect. Nor is any breeder no matter what they claim.
2. The only absolute guarantee you have when purchasing a dog is to get an adult with the size, temperament etc. your looking for.( a finished working dog) Also usually the most expensive.
3. After that experienced dog people will look to purchase a prospect. This will usually be more expensive than a puppy but less expensive than a finished dog. This is a dog that is usually around a year old and displays some of the traits needed for use as a stud dog, working dog etc.
4. While a puppy is the cheapest and most popular option for most people it does have the least chance of being absolutely perfect due to genetic variation. Again choosing the right breeder for your goals will always give your best odds.
5. Look for breeders that have an open kennel so that you can see the greatest amount of what they are producing.
