Neptune had ride 4 today. It was a gorgeous day and a wonderful ride. Even better when my video works! I love seeing him trot under saddle haha, he's adorable. And its so cool to see! I have imagined it many times.
So yeah, as usual he had things all figured out and trotting was a piece of cake. He didn't mind my leg at all and understood it well. It was a rather warm day and I didn't want to wear out his good will so after a little bit of practice and just getting a feel for that trot we moved on to some steering work. Initially to the left he didn't quite understand he should follow his nose, but with the help of the panels (I do appreciate my round pen for things like this!) he was turning well in no time. To the right he had more of a tendency to get stuck with his nose to the left and unable to follow the feel of the rein but here too, with the help of the panels he had it figured out pretty quick.
Hoping to sneak away from work tomorrow morning and get in one last ride before the rain moves in later tomorrow.. it could be a while before things are dry enough for another ride after that. 😬

Neptune ride three today! I am very bummed.. the video failed to save. Argh. Only had that happen maybe once before over hundreds of times filming with my Pivo, but it had to pick today to fail. 😭
Anyway, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, Neptune was awesome! Today I had to accept that I wasn't going to wait for perfect conditions to ride forever, it was really nice that the first two rides were on warm sunny days with no wind, quiet horse friends, barn cats safely shut away etc. But today it was cooler, breezy, there were playful barn cats doing everything within their power to try to spook my horse.. and Ravenna deciding to be quite unhelpful - I had been tying her up near the roundpen as moral support, she is the leader of the herd and gives everyone confidence, and for the first two rides this had a nice positive effect. Today Magic and Dexter decided to go long and disappear down the pasture somewhere and Ravenna proceeded to holler and fidget like she can't live without them. None of this affected Neptune one bit. Nor did the neighbors feeding their cows (which can be glimpsed just barely through the trees, which has caused Ravenna some concern in the past). When he's good, he's so good.
As far as what we worked on today, we focused on understanding the cues to go faster. He's not sure he likes my legs very much, that's pretty typical haha, so when I add a little leg (just a squeeze) his first inclination is to stop and bite my leg. But I help him out with the verbal cue he knows from the ground and his response is getting better. And my leg remains whole, so far. 😂

And the big thing, we got a trot! I really didn't think we would get it today and that was ok if we didn't but then he did it. And again! We picked up a trot 3.5 times (first time counted as 0.5 because I rewarded as soon as he thought trot before he actually did it :P ). By the last time he was picking it up confidently, he knew what I wanted. I should add that each trot was a max of maybe 8 steps haha, reinforcing just picking it up before I ask for him to continue any distance. His trot felt like it looks.. a lot of up and down motion, but not uncomfortable.

Neptune ride two in the books! It was a success! :D He's so fun when he's a good pony. Second smartest horse I've ever worked with. Close second :P
Today he was very different than yesterday, in a good way. We were off and walking before I could even ask for it, and he was all about the wandering around today. I loved that, I could spend time just being a passenger.. just letting him get used to carrying a person without any demands. And I loved how he just went around doing horsey things. Sniffing p**p. Munching weeds. Trying to cram his head through the panels ( 🤦‍♀️ ok yeah I did ask that he not try to kill us with the panels just yet :P ). Not concerned about his passenger one bit.
As he wandered around I started to ask for some steering here and there, he did SO good with this. Ravenna really struggled with this.. I think I prepared Neptune WAY better for this part haha. It was easy to forget that this was the first time steering, it was like he already knew it. A little stiff/slow to give his nose in spots but always turned and no real confusion about what to do or which way the pressure was coming from. No objections to being guided.

Later in the ride I did get some opportunities to ask him to walk off instead of him going on his own. He was awesome, walking off with a light squeeze, he was really understanding the cue today. So then I started to play around with asking for him to speed up in the walk. This was harder, he thought my legs meant something else - yield the hindquarters or forequarters or a pretty shoulder out.. or why not a counterbend? Can't fault his try or his creativity haha but it took some guessing before he thought to just walk faster. I was able to get it and reward it a few times though so we'll see what he learned next ride.
Couldn't be happier with these first two rides on my "special" pony! 😁😁😁

Soooo… not using that halter today 😨😂

So this happened today! Neptune's first ride! The weather is perfect this weekend, and finally everything came together and I was able to get this done. Yesterday I reviewed just sitting on him like I did back in December and he did great with that. This morning before I started filming I also reviewed just sitting on him and he was starting to take a step here and there, really thinking about walking off, so I knew it was definitely time.. haha. I was going to get a first ride whether I wanted it or not :P

I was really happy with how this went and where we ended. I had a better plan in my head than I did when I did Ravenna's first ride and I definitely did a better job this time haha. It did help that there wasn't deep inviting sand in the roundpen so I didn't have to worry about him rolling.. with Ravenna I was paranoid haha :P

Neptune did amazing, a little frustrated a couple times but he was able to come out of it. Of course he was his usual piranha self, everything went in his mouth, but that was to be expected. He is freakishly smart and catches on sooo quick.

Toaster says he really appreciates everyone who has checked in on him. He’s doing as well as can be expected I suppose. I’ve seen him roll once, on his good side, so that was nice to see. He stood well for his trim today (with lots of breaks on his ‘good’ hind leg). And is generally in good spirits. We switched out his buddy, Dexter was too stressed being away from the others and wasn’t settling so we put Zephyr in, they were so happy to see each other and Zephyr has been much more relaxed. And he could use some TLC himself so it works out well.

Neptune's transformation into a water horse is complete. He is no longer an embarrassment to his name sake. 😂 Session 4 today and he had all the confidence and understanding I was looking for! And that was with us getting a quick 1/2 inch of rain last night that made all the water obstacles look different and more challenging not to mention adding a bunch of new ones. I love how careful he was in the second clip (when he's walking away from the camera) in picking his way through the rocks. This was his first time doing this section because its difficult, there's boulders under the water that create deep and shallow spots very abruptly. Love how he checked where to put his foot at the 20 second mark.

Neptune is a very rewarding horse to train. With something new he often starts out really quite horrible.. haha.. but he retains his training 100%, starts off right where he was the previous session, and has the most remarkable transformation from start to finish haha. The winner of the "most improved" award every time. 😂

Day 3 of Neptune's water obstacle training. Now he's starting to get confident! He did great today, even taking on new and different water obstacles on the first try. Next up - being able to send him through the water while I stay on the edge.

Second session working with Neptune on crossing water and we have some success! He needs more confidence but did end with him walking calmly through it. Our work is far from done though. But based on the weather forecast our natural water obstacles will be around for a while also. 😏🌧🌧

Today I remembered who actually could use some work on natural water obstacles, Neptune! (That sounds ironic given his name haha). In fact as I brought him down there and he refused to even consider walking through a puddle (haha just another bit of evidence that I picked the wrong name for him.. 😬) I realized I don’t think I’ve ever asked him to step in water before. Well time to start then! We were joined by a quite curious cow across the street that watched us intently. While Neptune had not made much progress by the time said cow wandered off, I felt confident that I could have asked her to cross any water and she would have known exactly what to do. 😂. Neptune, on the other hand, will need a few sessions 😅

Gorgeous day today, it was so nice to be back in the saddle after a long break due to the wet weather and mud. Had our very first ride in the new arena! Love it!! And then went down to play in our new water obstacles, complete with entourage of course 🙄

Every morning I take the doggo for a walk around the pasture at sunrise, and every morning I am amazed at the variety of natural beauty that I am rewarded with. I end up with way too many pictures as each sunrise seems to be better than the last.

The break in between winter storms here has provided some amazing natural beauty. These were all taken today. This had to be one of the most epic rainbows I have personally witnessed. Absolutely amazing!

Oh and what better way to introduce our new arena! 😍 This has been the major ranch project we have been working on. Or well, mostly hiring other people with the right equipment to work on :P This was previously an old shooting range where someone had bulldozed up big berms on three sides. And then later used it as a place to pile junk. It was pretty ugly. It looks soooo much better now and once the week of rain is over and it dries out for a week or two then maybe I'll get to use it too. 🌧🌧😅

Good news from the vet, she couldn’t feel anything broken or unstable. Just lots of swelling, and the hematoma. She thinks he will be back to 100% with stall rest and bute. How long is anyone’s guess. ‘As long as it takes’. Just glad he’s going to be ok! 😅

Toaster update: vet is coming this afternoon to see what she can do. His status is the same as Sunday, moving encouragingly well although far from sound of course, hips still notably asymmetrical, and a large hematoma jiggling about in his flank/stifle area.

The weather is gorgeous. Here is Simon posing on the bench and being generally loud 😆

Meanwhile we are working on some projects around the ranch. Ravenna is ranch boss. She is one of those bosses that is looking over your shoulder the whole time you are working 😂

I usually only post the positive stuff but well, here we are. The realities of horse ownership. They try to kill themselves regularly. 😐🙄 On Friday I went out to throw out some hay and found Toaster, 3 legged lame and unwilling to move. Hoping for a simple abscess, I looked him over, and found that no, this would not be a simple abscess. Clear signs of trauma to his right hip. The cut was superficial but he was breathing hard and his haunches were shaking. I couldn't convince him to take a single step. I figured it was time to panic. 😱 But, first, a vet. :P Then as I was finding the number to an emergency vet Toaster volunteered to walk over to the yummy alfalfa everyone was eating. So that felt a little better. It wasn't pretty, not really weight bearing.. but the joints seemed to operate as expected.
After a talk with the vet we agreed that there wasn't much she could do given that there wasn't an obvious broken leg (thank goodness), so she said to confine him and give him bute. So I did. It took a long time to walk that 40 feet to the pen. Ravenna got to be his friend for the night and she was wonderful. Switched her out for Magic in the morning as she was getting restless. Magic is happy as a pig in mud living in a stall with food delivered.. haha.. sigh.
By morning Toaster's pain level seemed tolerable, no longer heavy breathing and a little more willing to walk although still very very lame. Talked to the vet, she said to give it until Monday with bute and rest and if he's still bad by then she would come out and try to palpate for broken bones.
I started to look more closely at the swelling and shape of his hip and I am becoming convinced that he broke the "wing" on his pelvis.. From behind the whole right side looks flat compared to the left, he's always had "bony" hips that stick out, now he seems to have a singular bony hip. 😲 At this point I am kind of hoping that is in fact what it is.. because surprisingly this does have a good prognosis, with the majority of horses sound and returning to work after 3-6 months of stall rest. But at this point this is just my amateur diagnosis. We will probably know more on Monday.
As for what he did? I think he slipped and slammed down on his hip, but I don't know for sure. He has a few superficial scrapes elsewhere that seem to support this. He could have also slammed it against something or got kicked but that seems less likely.

This past weekend I attended the year end awards banquet for Hidha Hi Desert Horsemen's Association. Despite the fact that Ravenna and I missed the last (double point) show of the season due to moving, we had such a lead in our classes that we held on to the championship buckle in two (Ranch Riding Walk/Trot Open and Ranch Trail Walk/Trot Open) and Reserve Champion in Ranch Reining Walk/Trot Open and a third place in Ranch Rail Walk/Trot Open. Not bad for our first season showing! Sadly this will be our last season with HiDHA as it is a bit too far to travel from our new place. I am going to miss it and all the friends I made there. It was the first place I ever showed. I can only hope to find somewhere as friendly and welcoming up here to show off my mustangs!

Built a little footbridge over the seasonal creek that crosses the lower part of our property. I thought it came out pretty cute! Sturdy enough to ride over too, for a nice little training obstacle. Can't wait to see it when the creek is running. :D

Today we welcomed a new family member. Meet Rigby, a ~3 year old Doberman that we adopted from the Fresno County animal shelter. He is incredibly sweet, chill, and already trained on all the basics - potty trained, leash trained, basic commands etc. Rode in the car like a perfect gentleman, barely noticed the chickens, respectful of the horses, very curious about the cats and not sure if they might be small dogs but I think he will be easy to cat train. Boggles my mind that such a nice dog would be languishing at a shelter! I think he is going to love the ranch dog life.
