Yesterday we kicked 2022 off!
We collected a beautiful dwarf and a beautiful Roborovski from a sanctuary in Coventry. They’ll now be looking for permanent homes here once they’ve been signed off by a vet and have under gone taming by us!
Firstly, we have a lovely 3 month old female dwarf who’s interested in interacting but needs some work in trusting humans and treats to convince her!
We also have a 4 month old male Roborovski called Yun he’s very speedy and nervous. We hope he has some potential to become a tame Roborovski but we’ll see how he goes over the next few weeks.
Both hamsters came from sad backgrounds and we’re just glad they now have a second chance to find a loving forever home!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!
We’d just like to wish everyone a happy new year before we end our day here. We can’t wait for another year of doing what we love and cannot wait to welcome new faces and say goodbye to faces that will find fantastic homes!
This year we welcomed new animals to TinyTails that we hadn’t initially expected to be taking when we first started. This year brought rats and even rabbits for us, increasing our knowledge and helping us to raise awareness for correct care of these species. This led to us meeting so many wonderful people in the rat community and even begin a small boarding service for small animals!
We were also recognised by the National hamster committee as a rescue and other groups recognised us for our accomplishments!
We cannot wait to work towards gaining our registered status with the government but for now we will be also focusing on our ability to care for more animals and a more extensive range with plans to start taking in piggies and bunnies. This will take a while whilst we set plans in motion and move again as our contract is up but this will be a future target for us!

We’d just like to thank everyone for helping us achieve this and support us in ways we have been overwhelmed by. We’ve had people give grand donations and go above and beyond for us and we genuinely cannot thank everyone enough for what you’ve all done! We hope everyone has a wonderful 2022 and joins us for another successful year!

Why African Soft Furs?
It’s come to our attention how little people know how great these creatures are! They’re not the most common of pets compared to mice or rats but they’re equally as lovable. At the moment we have a few pairs of male mice with African soft furs. This is to reduce the risk of losing our boys during a castration and is considered a wildly successful alternative! Not many people understand that they are very similar to mice in terms of care and required enclosures, they’re also super lovable and cuddly. Here below is one of our girls who is currently bonding with Splash one of our male mice. She’s very confident and loves malt paste! She’s slowly getting there with handling but loves climbing around. So why African soft furs?
They make great pets it’s that simple! Although uncommon we believe they make a fantastic addition to any household! If you’d like to know more please message us and maybe you could adopt a fantastic group we have here!

Unfortunately Salt and Tofus homes have fallen through due to unexpected medical bills. This just truly reflects the current situation with unwanted animals as we are all being overwhelmed! So we are now appealing for a great forever home for both of these boys (separate). Salt has had some interest but it has all fallen through unfortunately and he is still looking. He is tame and is an energetic boy that loves to explore. He’ll need an 80x50 and a 28cm wheel minimum to be happy!
Tofu is also similar and tame, he loves exploring and is a very nosey boy! He will also need 80x50 and a 28cm wheel minimum to be happy but bigger is always better!
If you feel you could give either of these guys a great home please message for an application, thank you!

Tho is Moo and Lilo. Moo came in with 3 other boys after their owners became bored of them. Kilo came in as part of our on going project to offer less invasive techniques for pairing male mice. They’ve both paired really well and are enjoying burrowing and cuddling together. Moo is the more confident one and is always protecting Lilo if she gets nervous! Moo is around 8 months old and Lilo the same! They’ll need a 80x50cm cage and a 28cm wheel with lots of enrichment. If you feel you could give them a forever home please message us for an application!

Merry Christmas to all our lovely followers!
All the animals have enjoyed a little dinner which they’ve all devoured! They’ve also all been given presents so you may recognise some of your donations in the photos, we’d just like to thank everyone who has donated and raised money for us this Christmas. It’s really helped us out in ways you couldn’t imagine, allowing us to help more animals and provide for rabbits now too, without you guys we genuinely wouldn’t have been able to do this year without you so thank you!
Some donations didn’t have names on but we’d especially like to thank: Sarah Stenson - Bentley and her lovely girls for all the presents they donated as you can see some didn’t last long with them gerbils 🤦🏼‍♀️. We’d also like to thank Claire Hudson as you can see Toffee has been nudging her wooden chews around and made a massive mess as usual! We’d also like to thank Sally Keen and Delilah for their massive efforts this year at raising money for us so far they’ve raised £77 and this will go towards Toffees spay and vaccinations!
We truly mean it we couldn’t function without you guys and the people assign we see from everyone, it’s kept us motivated to help all the animals and strive for more! Hopefully 2022 can bring even more lives to happier homes and we can get to meet some new faces!

Both Salt and Tofu have now been reserved. After their vet checks and after Christmas they’ll be going to their new home with Sara-Jane Douglas, she’s been a fantastic safe heaven for a few of our longest residents taking two Roborovski boys who were searching for a while and a beautiful female Syrian who was transferred from a previous rescue and needed lots of work! She’s an absolute super star and we can’t thank her enough for the support she provides us alongside taking in piggies and rabbits herself she also does this for us so thank you!

Salt is now our longest running resident and has been here since June! He’s such a delight and as you can see he’s a cheeky boy and is tame! He’s still working on directly walking straight on to your hand but this is due to how excited he gets when he sees you! Salt is now 11 months old, his brother happily found a home however he still hasn’t!
There’s nothing more we’d love than for him to find a home in 2022. Could you give Salt a forever home?

This is 5 month old Maisie, she’s a beautiful female Syrian who came in after being unhappy in a paw hit. Female strains are notoriously high maintenance and she’s a classic example of this! Although they may be hard to please she’s also a character with such high energy! She’s hand tame and leaps towards you if she hears you coming. She’ll need a large enclosure preferably a detolf as she does need a large area. We will say no smaller than 120/140cmx50cm for her as she was u happy in a paw hut which is a great cage! She’ll also need a 28cm wheel and daily free roam time. If you’d like to apply drop us a message for an application!

So last night we had an unexpected arrival before Christmas, we had a request to take one more bunny! We still have Jet here but we did manage to make more room for this little Netherland Dwarf. She’s 5 months old and came in due to the realisation of costs rabbits can rack up. She’s settled in really well since and is binkying around now she’s got the space! Everyone meet Toffee!
If you’d like to give her a Christmas present or to one of our many residents we do have a wish list that has been set up: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/1RZUA47U7V40M?ref_=wl_share
We also have a PayPal: [email protected]
Every resident will be getting a present and a special Christmas dinner so if you’d like to help out you can do that via the link above or donate towards helping via PayPal! Thank you!

**RESERVED**

Goose & Mallard were born as part of an accidental litter due to a mis-sexing in the previous home and came into our care along with their mum and sisters.

The boys are quite timid and do run away when the cage door opens, but are not bitey when handled.

We are looking for a home for them where they will join at least one other rat. Bonding with a confident rat/rats will help them to learn that humans and the world in general are not scary!

More info on their requirements and a link to our adoption questionnaire 👉 https://www.tinypawsmcr.org.uk/goose-mallard/

AND before everyone asks, yes we have female rats but some of them are currently receiving treatment for upper respiratory infections so they aren't available yet 🙂

We had 4 new arrivals today!
Firstly we had 3 beautiful male rats, they’ve settled in really well and are already causing mischief, we have no doubt they’ll be off to their forever homes in no time!
Secondly we have Bimini a female gerbil, she came in after her cage mate died and her owner couldn’t take any more loss. It’s definitely very hard to lose a pet but to know the other will grieve is very hard and they did have her best interests at heart!
She’ll be bonded hopefully in the future and will then be looking for a forever home. If you have a lone female and want to get her a friend, get in contact and we’d be happy to help bond them for you!
If you’d like to help towards the costs of these guys care alongside the rest of the herd you can donate at: [email protected] via PayPal, thank you!

Finally we have our hamster gang!
We’ll start with our longest running resident here, Lilly. She came in from a rescue in Stafford after they closed all the way back in January. She’s not found a home due to her nervous nature but is still looking. She just needs someone patient. She’s currently beeing fostered by one of our wonderful fosterers who’s working with her everyday. She’s shown some improvement but we’re not sure if she’ll ever truly trust humans and may remain here permanently!
Next we have Salt, he is our second longest resident here as he arrived in June with Pepper. Pepper has found a home but he is still searching! He’s wonderfully tame and is such a delight to have here. It’s been sad to see him stay here as he’s such a sweet boy, he loves being stroked and has been working on walking straight on to hands! You can find his profile on our open applications album.

Next we have Mrs.Pickle she came in as an unwanted pet. She instantly stole hearts and reminded us of our original hamster who started this whole journey for us. She’s an absolute character and prefers to climb her wheel rather than run on it. She’s got so much energy and loves her setup. She’s also a permanent resident here due to a reoccurring cyst issue that she has. She’ll live out her days here destroying cardboard tubes and making a mess of her sand area!
We also have our little Mars who came in, in such sad conditions an inch of soaked sawdust and a tiny cage with no wheel. Surprisingly he took really well to the taming process and will be looking for a hole very soon! He enjoys foraging and running very fast in his wheel!
Next we have Jude our only Roborovski here, he’s currently being fostered and is doing really well. He’s got a little attitude and loves being nosey! He’s settled and will be looking for a home very soon!

Then we have Hazel one of our special permanent residents, you have already met her but she is truly a wonderful hamster. Despite her age her energy never slows and she’s always looking to be naughty!

Finally we have Tofu, our most recent hamster intake. He’s been really sweet so far, allowing us to handle him slowly but surely. He’ll be looking for a home soon but right now he’s enjoying burrowing and playing in sand. He’s finally found his favourite hobby and loves soil!

As you can see from the last few days we have a lot of animals in our care and this can sometimes be a full time job here. We absolutely love looking after them however hard it gets and love following their outcomes! If you’ve adopted off us show us how they’re doing below!

Here we have a range of photos of our mice and African soft furs. We do dtill have some lone males awaiting pairing but due to lack of space they are awaiting bonding! We currently have 5 lone males who are thriving however will be enjoying some company in the future. They enjoy being handled daily and free roaming, all boys are inquisitive and love causing mischief.
We currently have 5 mice and African soft furred groups with 2 being named and looking for homes! You can find these in our open applications album if you think you could give them a great home. Mice and African soft furs are a fantastic experience and since having Zeus and the girls here at TinyTails we’ve learnt so much. Soft furs are just as mischievous and intelligent as mice and often give us the run around when play time comes!
We also have the girls who came in and one accidental litter with them totally 11 in their enclosure! All girls are thriving and helping mom, it’s so nice to see such a tight knit unit. We’ve enjoyed babies growing up so far and can’t wait to see where they go!
We’ve been bonding male mice to African soft furs since we got Zeus as a less invasive approach to helping lone males make friends. We’ve had successful bonds since and can’t wait to see our current groups find forever homes!
If you have any enquires about adopting some groups that are looking for homes please drop us a message!

Our next stop is our current rabbit resident Jet! She’s still with us as her spay has been delayed due to various reasons that have been out of our control. She’s really settled since she’s been here and has been an absolute terror! She’s certainly made her mark here and has enjoyed The Honest Crittery’s treats, she’ll be going there soon as her spay has happened and healed. But for now she’s been munching on all sorts and even chasing Rosie around!
In the future we will be looking to take rabbits as soon as we have more space, Jet was an emergency that we couldn’t say no too, but over the next few months we’ll be looking to expand our facilities and aim to take in piggies and rabbits🤞
In the meantime if you’d like to help with Jets care alongside the rest of the furry friends you can PayPal us at: [email protected].
Thank you!

08/12/2021

These are our permanent residents! You’ve already met, Scar, Skylar, Polar and Bolt. But we also have quite a few other residents that live here.
Firstly we have Rosie, she came in after being to her 5th home in 3 years (she was only 3!). She was absolutely terrified having been locked in a room at her last home and kept with other animals such as a dog and cats. She was left to settle and she soon came out her shell. She’s still absolutely terrified of other animals and runs away from anything. However she will scream for attention as she’s also jealous of them!
Next we have Bear, she came from an accidental litter we had before we even opened! She was one of 3, and the runt. We didn’t think she would make it and quickly became attached which is why she stayed. Over a year and a half on she’s still thriving. She’s also a classic example of a female Syrian as her tank is her 6th cage due to chewing out of them!
Thirdly we have Pumpkin, he came in after being unwanted as he was a very nervous boy. We quickly collected him as they threatened to put him to sleep as they couldn’t have him much longer. He’s since moved into a cluttered 120cmx60cm cage and is much happier. He’s not nervous and has never shown a stress behaviour since!
Next we have Churro and Waffle, they became permanent residents after we noticed they were very sick where they were living. We took them out of a cramped situation and got them the antibiotics they needed. Since then they enjoy popcorning and munching on all things veg! They still have their lives ahead of them due to being 20 weeks old when we collected them and we can’t wait to see what they do!
Next we have Zeus, Aphrodite and Hera. Zeus was the very first mouse here and quickly stole some hearts, we decided to keep him and let him teach us more about mouse care. After researching possible bonding options, we found he had a heart murmur meaning he couldn’t be neutered. After further research we found out about the beautiful African soft furs. We were then contacted by someone who no longer wanted these two baby girls and we happily accepted! After the girls were treated as they were portly on entry we got to bonding them. This was another learning experience from us and we absolutely feel in love with the girls. Since then they happily live in a Barney and thrive in it. All three love malt paste and cuddles, you’ll often seen them in hammocks cuddling and it’s shown us a beautiful and less invasive way to bond lone males!

Lastly we have Hazel! She came from a sad situation having lived in a pico XL with no enrichment or wheel most of her life. We’d been told that she’d been saved from being a toy to a cat so this was a better outcome for her. We were delighted to take her on, after an assessment we saw she was malnourished, had back leg degeneration and bald spots. Since being on a higher protein diet and having the opportunity to run around she has vastly improved. Her legs are now up to where they need to be, her fur has gotten thicker and she’s on weight! She’s so happy in her zoozone and enjoys foraging around in her soil.

We’d just like to thank people who donate and have been on this journey with us and followed all these guys lives! It has been a journey and we’re excited to see what comes in 2022!

08/12/2021

Our last gerbil group is these two beautiful boys, we’ve named them Polar and Bolt. They came in a few months ago after their loving family could no longer house them. They’ve since moved into a Marrakesh and have thrived! We made a promised and therefore these boys are permanent residents here and are well loved. Both love digging and destroying things and are two peas in a pod. They’re a joy to have here and we were happy to make the special request. Normally we take on a two week assessment for each animal/group and see if they fit a criteria to be rehomed or whether they need to be kept here permanently! However these boys were truly loved and the previous owner wanted to still be able to visit and potentially have them visit so we were happy to have them live here! They’ll be here for the remainder of their lives but it does mean we rely on donations for their upkeep, if you’d like to help out giving them the best lives they can have, you’re welcome to donate to us at: [email protected] thank you!

Another one of our beautiful gerbil groups! These two girls are currently bonding, Misty and pancake are trying to make friends before they can look for a forever home. So far it’s going well having been split for a few days. These girls were both surrendered to us due to losing there mates. Hopefully they can bond and then onto their new home!🤞
We’ve been doing bonding for all animals since we started and can proud and confidently do this now with; rats, mice, ASFs and gerbils. If you need any advice or need us to do it for you initially let us know we’d be more than happy to help!

07/12/2021

So today the thought we’d start show you all what we do here! We’ve started with one of our most special getbil case, Scar and Skylar!
Scar came in, in January 2021, when she had to be downsized in her cage and subsequently surrendered. She came here having been alone all this time, we’d learnt a lot from her as this was our first time accepting gerbils! We tried to bond her initially with one gerbil later down the line and it did fail. Now once Skylar came in we had the bonding idea, not knowing how well it would go! After a quarantine Skylar went in to bond with scar, there was interest and Scar was breaking through to be with Skylar, we kept an eye on this for 48 hours and decided to remove the split as they did just want to cuddle! After a 5 day watch of how they would be in the unsplit cage we put them in their detolf. After a few weeks we layered it up and as you can see they’re really happy now! Scar finally found a friend for the first time in 2 years and Skylar got the happier ending too!
With out Sarah Stenson - Bentley’s donation they wouldn’t be going crazy on this wicker ring made by her daughters so thank you!
If you’d like to also help us out you can donation to us via our PayPal at: [email protected] thank you!

Since having our 6 and now unfortunately 5 female mice come in we had them on pregnancy watch. Over the last few days we did notice a drastic change as you can see here. This morning we had a beautiful surprise as one of the girls gave birth to 7 wonderful pups. We’re letting her settle and get along with it, whilst we also let the other girls enjoy the last few days before they become potential parents too. We suspect two others are going to become parents but all will be monitored. It also does mean we need to delay the adoption of the girls so we only have male mice with ASFs alongside some dwarfs who really could do with a new home before Christmas! You can go to our open applications on our albums page to see who is looking for a home!
If you’d like to donate towards the care of these little babies and the future ones, you can donate via our PayPal at: [email protected]. Thank you!

We had more arrivals yesterday!
We said Hello to a male dwarf who we’ve named Tofu, he was unfortunately an unwanted present but is surprising tame. He’s been a joy here so far and we think he can find a great home very soon. He’s very energetic but loves to be stroked!

We also said hello to Loki, Ratatouille and Oreo, they were from a loving home where circumstances unfortunately changed, they came with absolutely everything and it was very clear they were dearly loved! Due to us having a big waiting list for rats they have already been reserved and will be joining 3 other lovely boys to become 6!
We do still have open applications if you go to our albums you’ll see a list where you can choose the right fit for you. We are still allowing adoptions over the Christmas period but will be now doing interviews alongside an application just to ensure we don’t have any unwanted presents !
Thank you everyone for the support we’re receiving and we hope it can continue! Jet is all vaccinated and waiting for her spay we haven’t raised the full amount yet but we still have time, if you could help us raise this in anyway you can PayPal us at: [email protected] this will go towards getting Jet a step closing ti her wonderful new home! Thank you

Yesterday we collected a beautiful 4 month old female Syrian. She came from a well loved house and it was clear she was truly cherished ! Unfortunately female Syrians are notoriously high maintenance and despite an appropriate cage and enrichment she was still exhibiting stress behaviours. She will be staying here until she’s confident handling as she did jump into her cage upon handling (luckily it was a very small height). Once she’s settled she’ll be looking for a forever home. For now everyone at Hello to Maize!

Here at TinyTails we have a number of projects that work towards improving animal husbandry and it’s awareness. One of these projects that we’ve began since we opened is taking unsuitable cages off the streets to avoid future rodents spending their lives in these tiny cages. As you can see the cage below the one we picked up is suitable, it’s 120cmx60cm and is slightly above the minimum for a Syrian hamster. The cage allows for his natural behaviours to be showcased such as digging, burrowing and foraging. The space allows for a large soil digging area, a massive sand area with a big burrowing area that pumpkin absolutely loves! The large space allows for the necessary enrichment he needs to be a very happy boy. The cage above allows for the exact opposite, as we collected we were told it hadn’t been cleaned out and all it had was sawdust and a bottle inside. Such a small area can be stressful for any animal as they need such a large space to be comfortable to be themselves! Unfortunately these cages are still easy to obtain due to companies choosing profit over appropriate animal care and this is what we fight awareness for on a daily basis!
Mr pumpkin is a perfect example of why hamsters need such a large space alongside the appropriate amount of enrichment. Mr pumpkin came in very nervous and despite him being housed in a savic plaza was very frightened and jumpy. With the increased cage size and enrichment he slowly became comfortable enough to begin the taming process. It took us a few weeks to get his clutter just right and this was really crucial for the little guy. But without the space we couldn’t have created the environment he needed, it also allowed for us to see his silly character as he loves wiggling in his sand!
As you can see bigger is always better as Pumpkin needed above the minimum to allow for him to be himself and begin interacting with us.
If you’re still questioning why to upgrade, it may be useful to compare a box room to having a whole house to yourself, it’s much more entertaining and you don’t feel imprisoned into one tiny tiny room! This is exactly how a hamster sees there lives too alongside other rodents, which is why bigger IS ALWAYS BETTER but when done correctly! The reason we say when done correctly is because some rodents do get the space they need but with nothing inside to entertain them, the space is often very daunting for them and they get just as stressed as if they were in a small unsuitable cage! The minimums we recommend are:
Syrian hamster- 100cmx50cm
Dwarf or Roborovski hamster- 80cmx50cm
Rats- per two- 80cm x50cm x 80cm with this to increase depending on the group
Mice/ASFs: per three- 80x50cm with this to increase depending on the group
Gerbils- 20 gallons per gerbil

These are really important to consider when adopting to as you may not have the space to allow them to live their best lives!
Finally, as we continue this project it does impact our budget, sometimes we’re lucky enough to pick these cages up for free and sometimes people do like to profit off them! Alongside this we’ve had some hefty vet bills with the poorly mice, Jet the rabbit’s spay/vaccinations and also some sad goodbye visits in the last few weeks. We also have to allow for petrol costs, material costs and other site visits! So if any of our followers could help out, even £1 this would drastically help to continue the work we do here at TinyTails. If you’d like to donate you can PayPal us at: [email protected] or you can message us for other ways to help us out, thank you!

This week we used left over pumpkins as treats! Everyone enjoyed different parts of the pumpkins in controlled amounts. This part of the process of rehoming is vital as we get each animal ready for their new homes, we introduce them to all herbs, fruit and vegetables that they can have. This allows their new owners to be confident in giving them controlled amounts of different foods and allows us to bone with them better. Each resident had a little bit and they all thoroughly enjoyed it. This does mean we’ll have a new set of animals looking for new homes soon but we do still have a few looking! If you check out our open applications in our photo alums you’ll see everyone looking for homes! Salt and Lilly are our longest residents so far and have been looking for a while now. They’re both very sweet however Lilly is needing a more patient home due to her history, if you think you could give them a forever home, drop us a message!

Jet has settled safely into TinyTails HQ and has even taken a real liking to lying across the sofa and and trying to dig into the blankets! She’s grown a lot in confidence. It still has a long way to go.
We are still asking for donations towards her vet bills and would really appreciate anything you could donate! You can send your donations to our PayPal @ [email protected] and this will go towards her spay and ongoing treatment, thank you!

The day came yesterday to finally welcome the bunny! We also said hello to 8 mice alongside her. 6 girls and 2 boys; unfortunately one had a severe tumour and the vets have advised that she’ll be PTS very soon, the others seem ok however due to the conditions they were housed in they have URIs and are on strong antibiotics. We are hoping they make a full recovery but are being monitored very closely. Our little girl Jet the rabbit travelled safely and is extremely nervous! We’ve given her a pedicure and make her nails look beautiful so once she’s spayed she’ll go to find a nice suitor which we have lined up already with the wonderful The Honest Crittery who have offered to give her a fantastic permanent home once she’s had her spay and vaccine.

On a more postive note we have raised half the money towards Jets arrival but still have a long way to go! If you could spare anything to us you can donate at: [email protected] via PayPal (please send friends and family so PayPal doesn’t take a cut) and this will go towards Jet’s veterinary costs and the mices care! We appreciate anything you can give us and we’d especially like to thank
Claire Hudson and Andrew for the main donations, this has enabled us to get the cage and materials for Jet and to book her vaccinations in! Thank you!
