WONDERFUL W**D DOGS 🌱🦮

Parthenium w**d, serrated tussock and Hawkw**d are just a few of the invasive plants the magnificent w**d detection dogs like Fonzi, Dash, Connor and Sally have been finding over the past few weeks.

There are a few things that make the dogs so effective on these massive projects:

1. They cover a lot of ground. On a typical workday, the dogs run 2-3 times further than their handlers and regularly air scent w**ds up to 30m on the wind.

2. They are not fooled by native lookalikes. On many occasions we've been looking closely at similar plants asking ourselves, “Is this it?” We then ask the dogs to check it and receive definitive yes or no (often with a rather disparaging “what were you thinking?” look!)

3. They are brilliant at finding cryptic w**ds hidden amongst other plants. These w**ds would never be found by any other method.

4. They help raise the profile of these important threats to conservation and agriculture. Turns out people love dogs! Nothing brings out the local news crew quite like a dog with a job, which gives us a great chance to inform people of these w**ds they might come into contact with throughout their day.

None of these projects would be possible without the inspirational and dedicated pest and w**d experts working in local and state government agencies. They have entrusted this critical work to a select group of very, very specialised dogs with outrageously high ball drive.

Not just any old sniffer dog will transfer onto finding plants in the kind of environments these guys do. They truly are one in a million dogs.
