IT’S MY SWEET 16 🥳: it's hard to believe that today marks my 16th year as a practicing veterinarian! I still remember my first day on the job like it was yesterday. I was nervous, excited, and full of anticipation. Little did I know that this journey would be one of the most rewarding, thrilling, and exhausting experiences of my life.

Over the years, I have seen it all - from the joyous moments of a new puppy checkup, to the heart-wrenching decisions of saying goodbye to a dearly beloved pet (plus a lot of “spicy” cat patients in the mix🤪)

There were years when I felt like I was on top of the world, and others when compassion fatigue and imposter syndrome seemed to be the only two constants in my work life. But through it all, one thing has remained - my love for what I do.

Being a veterinarian is more than just a job for me; it's a calling. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to help animals and their families, to make a difference in their lives, and to be a part of their journey. So here's to another sweet sixteen years, and many more to come!

Summer is here and the heat is unbearable! This can be challenging for dogs, especially those with thick fur coats. Here are some tips to keep your furry friends cool and comfortable during the hot months:

☀️Provide plenty of fresh, cool water and shade (pleeease put the water bowls in the shade);

☀️Avoid walking or exercising your dog during the hottest part of the day. (n.b the temperature of asphalt can be twice as hot as the air temperature. If the asphalt is too hot for the back of your hand, its too hot for your dogs paws!). Take walks in the early morning or late evening when it's cooler;

☀️NEVER leave your dog in a car, even with the windows cracked;

☀️Freeze treats: Freeze some of your dog's favorite treats in ice cubes or make pupsicles by blending fruits and vegetables and freezing them in ice pop molds;

☀️ Be aware of your dog's breed and their susceptibility to heat. Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like the French Bulldog & Shih Tzu are not able to cool themselves as effectively as other breeds, and are at increased risk of developing heat stroke.

Do you remember the amazing "BUDDY the Cat" that was cared for by so many amazing professionals including the ? Dr. Shelby Reinstein and the Vet Vision Center team had the pleasure of seeing today.

Buddy had , which is the inward rolling of the eyelid edge. This defect often results in corneal and conjunctival irritation from hairs rubbing on the eye, which often leads to squinting and worsening of the entropion. Cats most often develop entropion secondary to age-related loss of orbital mass (fat, muscle, fluid).

Using the latest advancements in medicine and NON-Surgical techniques, Dr. Shelby was able to fix this problem using an eyelid filler injection (hyaluronic acid) to plump the eyelid tissue and allow it to stay flipped out. The injection is performed under sedation, is generally successful with one injection, and usually last for years.

Cute boy Remi is getting a checkup and his third puppy vaccination.

💉Puppies, just like human babies, need to be vaccinated to protect them from disease.
💉ALL pups need to get 4 vaccinations (sometimes 5, depending on the breed and medical history), starting at 6-8 weeks of age. The vaccines are given at 2-4 week intervals until the pup is at least 16 weeks old.
💉These vaccines protect against diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and leptospirosis.

Have your pup examined and vaccinated in the comfort of his/her home. DM me to book an appointment! 👩🏾‍⚕️🩺🐾

One of my favourite kitty patients, Pepper 😻
Cats can be a bit challenging as patients (both in clinic and on house calls), but most times I luck out and get a well-behaved kitty (it took a while tho with Pepper - he was a bit distrusting of me for several months after I neutered him 🤔) Pepper gets his deworming and heartworm prevention every 2 months, as well as his monthly Frontline flea treatment for cats.

Cats can be very independent creatures and are much easier to take care of than dogs, in my opinion. They tend to only be seen at the vet when they become sick or injured. However, whether indoor or outdoor, regular health checks are important for your cats! 🐈🐈‍⬛

FUN FACT FRIDAYS: Have you ever heard the notion that dogs only see in black and white? Soo that’s not exactly accurate.

Dogs can see colour, but only a limited spectrum. They are essentially colour-blind - they are not able to distinguish between red and green.

Dogs can see blue, yellow, and some shades of gray. This is probably why dogs tend to gravitate towards toys that are yellow (tennis balls!) and blue - they are much easier to distinguish from other objects.

Another fun fact: Labrador Retrievers have better eyesight than most breeds - they are the breed most commonly used as seeing eye dogs for the visually impaired.

A friend of mine posted this pic of her dogs relaxing in her backyard.

Or so I thought. (swipe for more)

Turns out, she owns NO dogs - these are her neighbours’ dogs who decided that her yard was the perfect cool down spot after their mating season “activities”.

Now, I know that it’s the norm culturally for some pet owners to allow their dogs to roam and “do their thing”/ “sort themselves out” on the road 🙄, but unfortunately this leads to many consequences, such as:

⚠️Increase in stray dog population
⚠️Males fighting over females -> dog bite wounds -> maggots -> $$$$ vet bills
⚠️dogs attacking people on the road (VERY IMPORTANT as YOU the owner are held liable)
⚠️dogs being hit by cars
⚠️dogs straying from their neighbourhood and getting lost

As the owner, it is your responsibility to:

▶️Ensure that your dogs are kept within the confines of your property, especially if you have a female dog in heat
▶️SPAY AND NEUTER your animals -> decreases roaming

(Side note: I know I focused on dogs in this post, but PLEASE spay and neuter your cats as well!)

MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS TO OWNING A PET:

🐾Companionship -Pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets

🐾Lowers stress - playing with a pet reduces cortisol levels (stress hormone)

🐾Mood booster - playing with a pet can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine (happiness hormones)

🐾The act of taking care of another living creature gives us a sense of purpose and meaning.

Sweet girl Hades has just completed her puppy vaccinations! 🥳🎉

🐶Vaccinations are important in protecting pups and dogs against diseases such as canine parvovirus and leptospirosis.

🐶Puppies should be vaccinated at designated intervals, starting at 6-8 weeks, by a REGISTERED and LICENSED veterinarian. A single vaccine will not protect your pup!

Giving your dog stale food (or if your dog raids the trash) can give them “garbage gut”, which is a type of gastroenteritis.
Symptoms include a loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea (sometimes with blood 😦)
With the wide variety of dog food brands on the local market, giving your dog stale food should be a thing of the past!

🐾Today is Chihuahua appreciation day! Chihuahuas are one of the smallest dog breeds, weighing no more than 5-6 pounds. They are named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua and are also one of the oldest dog breeds around!

🐾These tiny but mighty dogs tend to get a bad rap, due to their “sassy” personality 😬😂. They are fiercely loyal to their owners and are quite wary of strangers! Proper socializing with other dogs and people from an early age may help to curtail undesirable characteristics later on.

🐾They can live on average up to 16 years, so, as with any pet, be sure to do your research if you are thinking about getting one. Health issues common in Chihuahuas are heart disease, eye disease, patellar luxation (loose kneecaps), and epilepsy.
