Adak, Alaska Troy, Wade, Wes, and Bob will be rescuing ourselves by eating Caribou, Ptarmigan or Duck, and Fishing

Adak Army Base and Adak Naval Operating Base were the westernmost bases in the nation for a short while. Located about 1,400 air miles southwest of Anchorage, Adak Naval Base remained active until the late 1990s. It is one of eight National Historic Landmarks in Alaska that was designated to commemorate the World War II in Alaska.

The Great Sitkin volcano, which is located along the Aleutian chain about 26 miles east of Adak.

A volcanic cloud has since formed over the volcano, but Waythomas said it’s mostly made from water v***r and gas. The cloud was not composed of dense ash Thursday afternoon and Waythomas said he did not expect it to immediately impact Adak or aviation in the area. 6 Aug 2021

Wade, Wesley, Bob, and I will be going to Adak, Alaska on 18 Aug to 28 Aug 2021. We will be bringing a rifles, shotgun and fishing poles since we will be eating only what we can shoot or catch. This is a DIY hunt where we rented just a house and 4-wheel drive. I will be carrying a satellite communication device to allow me to both show our location and send a "proof of life" once in awhile. 😃

Caribou were introduced to Adak in 1958 and 1959 when 23 calves were transplanted from the Alaska mainland (from the Nelchina herd) at the request of the military, which had a base on Adak Island (Jones 1966).

The smallest “National Forest” in the US is on the Aleutian Island of Adak, Alaska, and it contains exactly 33 trees. The island of Adak was a US military base during WWII, and in an effort to boost the spirits of those stationed on the remote island, they instituted a Christmas tree planting program for 3 years from 1943 to 1945. Because the weather is so severe on the island, only one pine tree survived, until pretty recently. Somehow, another 32 pine trees have since grown, creating the tiny forest in the middle of the island. A sign left behind by a soldier in the 60’s reads “You are now entering and leaving Adak National Forest”.
