I copied this post just to help keep pet owners aware....i never give my own pups deer or buffalo horns for this reason! So glad shes better💜💜

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to share our story with Buffalo Horns just to raise abit of awareness with the dangers around them!

We were recommended a buffalo horn by a friend when I got my first lab, and he had it through adolescence. Then when we got our second lab in 2021 she also loved a good chew on it!

In April last year our nearly 1 year old started with vomiting, not eating, diarrhoea. We took her to the vets and it was out down to a sickness bug and she was given an anti sickness injection. She was better for about 24 hours then started again, but she started shivering, shaking, and I know it sounds bizarre but she smelt sick.

We took her back to the vets and they decided to X-ray her. They found something obstructing her stomach so took her to surgery to remove the obstruction. But what they found wasn’t just an obstruction but actually a piece of buffalo horn that had severed 3/4 of her intestine. They had to remove the damaged intestine which left her with just over 1/4.
Over the next 24 hours she developed Peritonitis and became incredibly weak. She was then referred to specialists in Manchester, the day before her 1st Birthday!
We had to go pick her up to take her and it was heartbreaking. She is usually so lively and jumping all over but she was so weak she could barely walk.
When we arrived in Manchester she was taken straight in, and we had to basically sign DNAR forms for her if she was to stop breathing in surgery.
When we said goodbye to her we literally thought that was it as she was given a 40% chance of surviving.
Luckily she made it through the surgery and then it was just a waiting game to see if her intestines would start functioning again, which they did 2 days later.

We got to visit her on her birthday, and she was bought home on the Tuesday!

It was the scariest time and I’ve only ever shared what happened on the dogs instagram, but as I’m seeing more and more people asking for recommendations I just can’t not share our story!

At the end of the day it’s up to you what you feed your dog, but if we can help stop this happening to just 1 dog then it’s worth writing this very long post 🤣

I have gotten so many new clients for this reason....and I cant stress enough how much your dog is better off staying home in their own environment, even if that means they are home alone for a bit...they do so much better in their home than being boarded😔 I copied this and am sharing just and FYI😊

Many dogs get stressed at the kennel. There are two types of stress: the stress from being in the kennel in the first place, and the stress of going home. When I worked for a kennel, I was impressed by the number of dogs that developed diarrhea, often within the first hours of being there. These dogs were clearly stressed. Being kenneled is NOT easy on the dog. He is in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by barking dogs and unfamiliar smells and noises. Some dogs may appear to care less about these changes, but most inevitably get visibly stressed and get the doggy version of nervous diarrhea.😔

The Ten Commandments of Dog Ownership

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you will be very hard and painful for me. Remember that before you adopt me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Please be patient with me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well being.
4. Do not be angry with me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends and your entertainment. I only have you!
5. Talk to me, even if I do not understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me. You only have to look at my tail!
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it!

Throw the tennis balls AWAY. Not a lot of people know this but tennis balls are one of the WORST toys for your dog! As someone who works in the *human* dental field I cannot stress the importance of dental hygiene, especially for dogs since they can’t vocalize what they feel! The ‘fuzz’ on tennis balls act as sandpaper. They are EXTREMELY abrasive and will grind your dogs teeth down very fast. The exposed pulp is very painful and causes sensitivity when eating, drinking, playing, etc. Plus, tennis balls are a huge choking hazard & are made with several different chemicals not made for consumption that could possibly poison your dog. Throw them away and protect your dogs!
