Ugh, there’s so many things out there that we can buy for our dogs. From collars and leashes to toys and beds, if you’re anything like me I get you find yourself browsing Chewy for an unreasonable amount of hours trying to decide what to get next for your pup. Here are my top 3 choices (currently) of things I use with my dog that I can’t imagine not having.

Long Line - I can’t imagine not having one (or 12) of these in my house. This makes such a difference for our woods walks; it gives my pup the freedom to go explore and get out his doggie-urges, without me having to stand in the brush 6 feet behind him. It also makes a great training tool for working on various things, including recall behaviors or distance work.

Car Crate - this was a big chunk of the puppy allowance but was worth every single penny. If I wear a seatbelt every time I get in the car, then I am certainly gonna make sure my dog has the same fart precautions while I’m in the car. My crate of choice is a Ruffland, but there are many nice car crates out there to choose from.

Toppl (by WEST PAW) - this was a new addition to to our toolbox but I am so glad to have it. My dog loves the Toppl more than most other enrichment toys we’ve used. Not only is it easier for him (so he doesn’t loose interest) but it hold so much food that it can keep him occupied for so much longer. They’re super durable and dishwasher safe too!

Now that you know my top three choices (for now), what are three things you can’t imagine not having for your pup?

NEW hi-vis safety vests came in, thanks to Together Press! 🦺👻 Safety is our priority at Savvy Snouts, for both the dogs in our care and the humans caring for them.

I cannot speak more highly of Justin and the crew at Together Press. My whole experience was stress free and exactly to my liking. Even though safety vests weren’t something they’ve printed before, Justin had no problem taking on my project. Can’t wait to throw more fun ideas at them!

Training Tip Thursday

Let's call it exposure...
Dog Owners are concerned about ensuring their dog is well socialized but what is actual socialization?

Socialization is neutrality!

This means not getting so excited they cannot follow simple directions, or so scared they are trying to hide or reactive.

Take your dog places and have them just relax beside you and take in the environment. Exposure helps develop neutrality.

‼️Pro Pet Sitter Tip‼️
If you have one of these water fountains for your cat or dog PLEASE take into consideration that if the power goes out for whatever reason, your pet will have NO access to water. When these particular fountains are unplugged the water does not sit in the top, it drains back down to the bottom. My biggest tip would be always having a regular water bowl as back up. Especially if you are traveling & your pet will be let alone for a period of time. I had it happen where a client forgot to pay their electric bill & their 4 cats had no water until I returned for my next visit. So please just use this tip to help prevent that from happening to your pet. Thank you for reading! 🐾💦

Life changes, from day to day, month to month, and year to year. As I have changed over the years, this Instagram page has (subtly) joined me in those changes. I am happy to say I am making a BIG return to the world of dog walking and pet care services. While you will still be getting tips and tricks about training dogs, we are shifting our focus back onto the services we are offering, and the happy faces that get to enjoy it! 🐶🥰

Marker words are SO vital to dog training! I’m sure plenty of dogs and humans have lived their whole lives never needing them, but they play such an important role in training and I can’t imagine not teaching them.

Need help understanding this concept or ways to apply it? Please feel free to reach out and we can chat about it!

🐾As a professional in the pet care industry, I want my clients to know that their dog’s safety and health will always be my top priority. I put together this flyer with some relevant information for the current URI outbreak!

🐾I have been monitoring and tracking the disease outbreak’s progress across the country since its start, and it has now been confirmed in both the state of Maine and Massachusetts. I want to stress the need for dog owners to avoid panicking, you all know your dogs well and their typical behaviors. You will know if something is wrong. The moment you’ve all been waiting for; welcome home Mars!

I’ve been eating up every moment of his delightful puppyhood this first week we have had him. Now that the honeymoon phase is nearing its end, and he’s actually acquainted to his new home we will dig right into some training. Stay tuned to see what we do together as the weeks pass!

It’s not always easy finding a puppy, and sometimes it’s downright overwhelming. We always want to do our best and responsibly bring a pet into our family but sometimes the information out there gets really contradicting. Here are a few things that I required from my breeder as I started looking for my new family member. Not everyone will have quite the same desires, but I tried to include the what’s and the why’s for a better understanding.

Often times when we talk about dog training, we focus on how we can change our dog’s behavior to match what we want. But changing how we act is a huge component of changing our dog’s behavior. After all, every dog and handler is a team and teams have to work together. These are a few small ways that we can change ourselves to reach those training goals with our dogs.

If you have any questions about what more you can do to help your team or if you have inquiries about my training services, shoot me a DM or an email!

Edit: I am a member of the French Bulldog Club of America.

Follow up from yesterday's post. Comments copied from a friend. Please read. Pic for attention.

It’s a sad state for the French Bulldog breed now being America’s #1 most popular breed. The even sadder reality is that the tiniest percentage of the French Bulldog breed today are actually bred by preservation breeders, considered truly purebred (AKC paper doesn’t equate to purebred!), and embody the breed standard of what a French Bulldog is supposed to be.

It’s never good to be ‘most popular’ in any aspect. And I will explain why this news doesn’t bring joy or excitement.

In the last 10 years AKC registrations for French Bulldog have increased by over 1000%.

1000%…let that sink in

The majority of those registrations come from backyard breeders, puppy mills or people thinking they can make a quick buck which results in many many dogs being bred who really shouldn’t be bred at all due to health concerns and/or lack of breeding quality.

The breed is experiencing a welfare crisis. BOAS and spinal abnormalities/IVDD being of major concern. Plus heart disease creeping in and Hip Dysplasia on the rise!

A good breeder will properly health test their dogs including OFA certifications, genetic hereditary disease, and meet the suggested health testing for the breed determined by the parent club, as well as stay abreast on current health studies. A true preservation breeder will only breed within the breed standard and will not participate in current fads.

Social media is full of Frenchies experiencing various health concerns, many of which are major diagnosis. Many of these are now ending up in rescues. Most of these so called “frenchies” look nothing like the beautiful well bred to the standard dogs.

The Frenchie market is over saturated with poorly bred puppies and studs who have nothing in front or behind their name but color DNA. Again, ask yourself why do you want a puppy from a breeder who actively shows and has dogs that have titles to prove they are worthy representation of what the breed is supposed to be…the answer is simple.

I hope the population will decline again and the demand lower. But until then, if you are looking to get a Frenchie or hear a friend go on about how cute they are PLEASE EDUCATE only support REPUTABLE BREED STANDARD breeders.

People always say ‘I thought my breeder was good until…

NEVER get a Frenchie from a breeder who doesn’t have OFA/PennHip reports to show. You want to see hips, heart, patella, eyes. A genetic DNA panel is NOT enough.

This breed needs a push into the right direction (in this case health and functionality) ITS THE BUYERS WHO ENABLE GOOD OR BAD BREEDING.

Say no to puppies from backyard breeders, puppy mills or people who are breeding their pets without having a clue about anything.

If nobody was to buy those puppies and support them, these places wouldn’t exist.

DEMAND DRIVES SUPPLY.

Let that demand be for HEALTHY dogs 🐾

The AKC uses registration data to collect the most popular breeds of the past year, and for the first time in history, the French Bulldog takes the #1 spot
