WHY I 'IGNORE' YOUR PET
When I walk into your home, I always 'ignore' your anxious or fearful pet (cat or dog) and wait patiently for them to make the first move.
I don't crowd them or touch them without consent. I don't face them head-on or stare them in the eye. I just observe them without putting them in a worse emotional position. Even when they venture close to me, I refrain from touching them. And no, I don't extend my hand so that they can smell me as they could smell me when I entered the gate already due to their keen sense of smell. Extending my hand just scares them. No sudden movements. No loud voices. Just calmness. I wait patiently for them to initiate contact and communication with me. Even then, I limit contact to 3 second bursts.
Sniffing me is not an invitation for me to touch! The dog is gathering information about me. I wait for him to nose me or paw me or lick me and then may pat them. Even then, I pause for corroboration (wait for another sign) to ensure that it's OK to pat them. Rather err on the side of caution and go slow.
I 'ignore' your pet out of love and respect. I give them choices. Choice based behaviour modification builds self-esteem and confidence.
Now you know why I 'ignore' your pet...

Let's get real for a second.
The world often paints a picture that dogs who live together are best friends and do everything together.
This is just not true. Many many many multidog household utilize management in different situations to allow dogs personal space to enjoy things such as:
- feeding time
- chew time
- play time
- attention time
This. Is. Normal.
Just because someone utilizes management, doesn't mean their dogs don't enjoy each other's company or have fun together. It just means that there are certain activities that they prefer to do on their own.
And I will tell you firsthand that implementing safe space zones and time apart can be so beneficial to the relationship between two dogs.
Think about it-- do you enjoy doing every single activity that you do at home with your spouse, family, or sibling RIGHT there? I don't think so.
So let's normalize management between dogs who live together!!

Ruby (right) and Snow (left) are each looking for a foster or forever home of their own! Both of these gals have been through training with us and are now just waiting for a family to call their own. Both dogs are great with adults, crate trained, potty trained, and could live in a home with other chill dogs. Ruby is good with kiddos but would do best in a calmer home, Snow would be fine with older teenage kids but would be best in a home without them. Cats are a no for both dogs. Ruby and Snow both do best with a calmer environment with a human who will provide them with guidance. Continued follow up training will be available to foster or adoptive families at no cost. These are both really great dogs who will thrive in homes that understand their needs and will put a little time into helping them transition to a new environment. We would love to talk more in detail about their needs if anyone is interested in fostering or adopting. They have been waiting patiently for the right fit - maybe that is you!

This is going to be a super boring video… but for good reason! When Percy first arrived for training he had a really hard time just relaxing and was very alert and often times reactive to sights and sounds in the environment. Eight weeks ago he couldn’t have even relaxed enough to sunbathe let alone be relaxed enough to not run up to the fence and react to hearing the neighbors on the other side. It is moments like this that show me just how much progress he has made and how much better he is feeling ❤️ Percy is a senior boxer available for adoption thru . He is looking for a calm and relaxing retirement home that will allow him do all of his favorite things (like sunbathing 🥰☀️) and continue to help guide him in life.
Sloan has been with us for a few days to see if rehoming him is a possibility. He is very dog reactive with his family & is not comfortable with the new baby in the home, to the extent that rehoming him is an option we all discussed & wanted to see if that what possible, and what a successful home for him would entail.
It turns out, Sloan is overexcited when he sees dogs on a leash or behind a barrier but he does really enjoy their company. He had a blast with the pack over at today ♥️

Ruby is somehow still hanging with us and while we really enjoy her, she would love to find her forever home soon. She is a really great and incredibly sweet dog but her biggest hang up is that she is very reactive towards other dogs when she sees them on leash. But the thing is that she actually LOVES other dogs and is great with them. We have been working on this with her but it is still very much a work in progress and she just needs someone who can continue that work with her. She is with and we would be more than happy to offer training support when Ruby finds her perfect fit. She is crate trained, house trained, and good with kiddos (recommending older kids simply because she would thrive in a calmer environment & younger kids can bring more excitement). Ruby is also treadmill trained and because her reactivity makes it difficult to get good walks in, this has been a great way to make sure she gets the exercise that she needs.

Trooper is hanging with us for a few days to board while his foster is traveling. He has some stranger danger so your average boarding situation wasn’t ideal for his needs. We are honored to care for this cutie!

Loki has been with us for a few weeks for a board & train program and he has been making such good progress! This goofy boy is a poodle x border collie mix and he has been so much fun to work with! We will share more on him before he goes home in a couple more weeks but we can already tell you we are going to miss him when he leaves 💙
Ruby did a two week reset & assessment with us to help her rescue get a better evaluation of her behaviors and what kind of home she would be successful in. She is an incredibly sweet girl who needs a calm, patient, human to help teach her new things and give her guidance in everyday life. She has done well with children, and is ok with dogs with slow intros. She would really benefit from a calmer environment as lots of excitement/energy gets her really worked up. While she is not with us for a training program, we have worked with her on crate training, treadmill training, and she is learning to yield to leash pressure. Ruby is looking for a foster or adoptive home that will continue to work with her to bring out her best self 💗

Harley hung with us this weekend for a trial boarding to help her become comfortable and she made some dog friends along the way (normally reactive, so big step for her!) ♥️
Taho joined us last week for a Reset & Assessment / Training program! This young guy is a complicated case so the goals are pretty straightforward - first we will offer him a safe place to decompress after quite a stressful last month of his life & assess what he needs for successful placement (& to be fully transparent here, the discussion of that potentially not being a safe option for the community was outlined as an option prior to him joining our program). We believe in transparency so will be sharing more on Taho in a later post- but wanted to introduce him as we know he has a lot of people interested in what is going on with him.
For those that aren’t familiar with him: At the end of January he was thrown from a vehicle during a high speed car chase, run over & found the next day hunkered down in a self-made den in the snow. He was taken to the emergency vet & stabilized, & then fostered in a home while they waited for surgery to repair his right rear leg at a later date. After surgery Taho has had a substantial amount of human bites (none were reported prior to surgery), which landed him at a shelter on a bite quarantine as he had no known vaccination history. He did not do well in that environment either & was going to be euthanized. Pet Haven, Inc. of MN reached out to us at that point to see if we could help them if they took him in.
He has demonstrated some serious behaviors since arrival & is currently only muzzle free when in his crate. To complicate things even more, this guy is still healing from surgery so he is on limited activity restrictions (young pups really tend to have a lot of energy) but overall he is handling it well & really enjoys peanut butter kongs & bones. ♥️
Taho has had more stress in the last month than most dogs do in their entire lifetime so we will continue to give him a quiet place to decompress while we gather more information on his life & interactions with humans in the past month, & follow up with the veterinary team that cared for him to determine if there is a medical explanation for the changes in his behavior - all while continuing to gain his trust & keep him enriched while we assess his needs.

Finley joined us last week for a board & train program. She may look familiar because after she was caught originally, she was with us for a Reset & Assessment. We are going to work on her ability to exist away from her humans, as well as her reactivity around strangers. ⭐️

Some Loki content 🥰 Loki has been working hard on loose leash walking, place work, ‘yes’ work, engagement, getting good physical and mental exercise, his dog social skills, recall, learning to rest, and how to be more appropriate in his play with humans.

I am using 'yes' as a cue to look to me for guidance when she is uncertain and in the last clip you can see that she felt unsure by the sound of the shovel falling and before I could 'yes' her she actually looked back to me on her own 👏🏼 Also the family that passed us in the aisle was so sweet ☺️ I'm not sure if mom was saying good job to us or to her kiddos for ignoring us but either way it made me smile. Gunner & Johnny are both in our board & train program. Gunner is on the tail end of his & Johnny just started ♥️. Place work helps them both work on impulse control & slow down. They both have a habit of moving too fast through life, which isn’t helping them make the best decisions. Our in-home board & train is a great option for families looking for some in-depth work but does require a lot of commitment on the human side as well. If you are looking for a change & are ready to make as much (if not more) changes as your dog will need to make, reach out & we can start the process to see if we are a good fit for you & your training goals. ☀️Update on June☀️ I’ll let the video speak for itself.
This isn’t the prettiest video to watch but it is important. This is June leaving an impound that was going to have to euthanize her today because no one could handle her in that environment. Here is what we know about June: she is fearful & unsure. She is underweight. The last thing she needs is a camera pointed at her face to try & capture a pic. June is very sensitive to pressure (we are talking about spatial & psychological pressure, not physical) - as many fearful & sensitive dogs are.. how you position your body, how you move your body, what you look at & how you are feeling all matter so much to dogs like her. Imagine being afraid of public speaking & then walking through a door one day onto a big stage in front of a ton of strangers. Then someone hands you a microphone & a spotlight is shined on you. That is how dogs like June feel like when a human focuses their energy &/or puts pressure on her. Right now her trainer (Rachel Snyder) is giving her space & respecting her instinctual needs. As June comes around to trust her, they can form a relationship based on that trust & respect. June joined us today for a 2 Week Reset & Assessment under her rescue, Pet Haven, Inc. of MN In honor of dogs like June, we ask that you consider taking it slow with nervous dogs & think about the pressure you may be putting on them with your words (the emotion behind what you are saying is what they understand) & your actions. These guys need us to not feel bad for them, they need us to lead them. Our energy is everything - lets not be the spotlight shining on an insecure dog, lets be that dog’s hype girl squad behind her, showing her that she can do this when she is ready & lets turn that spotlight off & come back when we are prepared & give the best speech ever 🙏
