Well folks, I tried to open in 2020 and now again in 2021 COVID continues to hit our communities. So sadly, we cannot do our socialization exercises that are so very important to have a well-rounded furry best friend. (In my classes I like to have each dog ready to receive a Canine Good Citizen certificate.) So with great disappointment I'm going to shut down this page for awhile until I feel comfortable with giving you the very best you and your dog deserve. God bless and stay safe!

My slogan has always been "There are no bad dogs, only untrained ones." All breeds are welcome! Some dogs do better in group classes and others are more secure in private settings be they a Chihuahua or an Irish Wolfhound. Call me for a free and private consultation at 304-724-6741.

Hoping for a Grand Opening this year when it's safe for us all to get together in a fun environment where we can work obedience and socialization exercises. Paw prayers to you all!

Good morning! Well, the fall season is upon us and as of now COVID keeps us from coming together for group classes. So for the safety of all involved we will plan on a "Grand Opening" in the spring. However beginning in November I will be posting helpful articles to all canine lovers. Do you have a question? Message me or call me at 304-724-6741.

That's why I train the owners and their families. I don't take the dog and train it myself. Interaction between myself and the owner-dog teams makes for success and a dog that you can take anywhere. I used to volunteer for my daughter's school and girl scout troop. The class was on safety around animals and care for pets. I always brought my sheltie, Sage and you would be amazed at how many children raced up to dog without asking first. We need to let our children know that it is never, ever ok to approach a dog without asking the owner if they may. A lot of folks say "My dog would never bite." My answer is always "Does he have teeth? Then if frightened enough, he will defend himself or his owner."

This goes for all pets, big and small.

The weather is going to get chilly soon. Is your dog where you want him/her to be in obedience as you spend more time inside. It's not to late to correct bad habits and give positive loving reinforcement in 2020. Call me at 304-724-6741.

I have worked very hard over the last few weeks to modify the socialization part of conducting group classes. 70% of our group classes revolve around basic obedience, the other 30% is learning to accept friendly strangers and unfamiliar dogs. (Your dog can know every single command and still show aggression towards other animals.) I've come up with a great lesson plan to include all of my original lessons while still keeping us safe during COVID19. Call me at 304-724-6741 for more information! Have a howling good weekend! Private classes are also still available!

Congratulations to the dog-owner team of Christy and Ivy (Ivy's on the right!) for being our first graduating private class of 2020. The handsome guy on the left is Rux who Christy will now be able to train on her own with the skills she learned from her classes! Will miss all of them and hope to see them in future group classes.

02/09/2020

Tomorrow the team of Christy and Ivy graduate basic obedience. Due to COVID we did a private class and Ivy is already performing intermediate exercises! Yay! Congratulations! Graduation photos to follow! Call me at 304-724-6741 to discuss your particular needs with your dog!

Was rummaging through some old copies of my old newspaper column, "The K9 Corner" and found an article that I wrote in 1999. I find it relevant today because I've had calls from so many local folks about their flea protection not working this year. AND I've had the same issue. I've used Frontline for 2 decades and never had an issue. This year I've had issues with fleas and mosquitos in the back yard! My Vet suggested Bravedo and I'm trying it on the 15th! She told me that Frontline has been around for so long that fleas have become immune to it. I'm also working daily on the yard and indoor environment. So here's the article! "Battle of the Fleas" It's upon us, the dreaded flea season. The other day while working a group of dogs, I felt a searing pain in my leg, (just kidding, it was just a little nibble.) Looking down, I saw a flea on my white sock. Now maybe it's just my overworked imagination but I could have sworn that this critter had on a leather jacket and a toothpick hanging out of his mouth! I took this as an indication that the fleas were getting a little tougher and a little wiser and it was time to wage war against them. I already hear someone saying "but I never see a flea on MY dog!" Guess what? Fleas only stay on the dog long enough to feed, the other 95%of the time they're in your carpet, couch, etc. YUCK! Are fleas a big deal? Absolutely! Adult fleas jump onto your cat or dog to feed on their blood. They then lay eggs which drop onto your carpet and grow up to be more biting, nasty critters. Not only fleas a nuisance, they can cause serious medical problems for your pets such as tapeworms, flea allergy dermatitis and in severe cases anemia which can lead to death. Stop the cycle! Treat all pets in your home at the same time. You are defeating the purpose if you only treat one animal. Secondly, treat the environment. Both your yard and your house should be treated on the same day that you deflea your pets. Your veterinarian can help you choose the right products for your dogs and cats. There are also healthy, non-chemical ways to treat your dog and your home. Call me at 304-724-6741 for more information. Have a howling good week!

Hey everyone! Am still only doing private classes as my group classes require us to perform socialization exercises.....Please call me at 304-724-6741 for more information (no texts accepted.) Paw prayers (and mine) that we are able to gather again with our fur babies in a group setting soon!

29/06/2020

Today is June 29th and I want to welcome our new and upcoming "students" Ivy, Rux and Bullet and congratulate their owners for taking the first step to help their dogs be confident and active members of the community. There will be a webpage coming soon!

28/06/2020

Have started private classes and am getting a huge amount of calls. So many dogs have been in quarantine with their owners and a lot of the questions that I am getting are about socialization issues and separation anxiety. Feel free to call me with any questions that you may have!

Thank you to everyone who has "liked" the page. We're over 50 likes now. Please remember that I do give free advice via phone although it is more specific once I meet the dog and "read" him or her! Have a great day!

This is an article I wrote that was published in "Dog and Kennel" in 2000. I think that it describes why I am so passionate about working with dog-owner teams. I've been told that tissues are necessary for reading this story.

First let me apologize for my lack of computer skills! However, I excel at dog obedience and canine behavior modification. I am excited to reopen my training classes and hope that you will join us or refer a friend. I have over 20 years experience as a trainer and am a Certified Veterinary Assistant. I have also served as an Evaluator for the Canine Good Citizen program. I will be posting a complete list of my qualifications shortly. We will begin registration for our June classes on May 1st. (That will give me a bit of time to get this fb page organized and publish my website - be patient with me folks!) Keep checking back, I will be adding to this page daily.

Why Choose Charles Town K9 OBDNS

Why choose Charles Town K9 OBDNS? Training your dog should not cost an arm and a leg and should be FUN for everyone involved. I am a professional trainer specializing in behavior modification, a Certified Veterinary Assistant, a former columnist - “The K9 Corner” and have been published in national periodicals. I am also a fund-raiser for non-profit animal organizations. I believe in hands-on training. Dogs are not appliances; they should be trained by their owners and not by a stranger. I make classes fun! Not only do we cover all basic commands in our classes but we also have socialization games that encourage your pup to welcome friendly strangers, be they human or animal. Interested dog-owner teams go on to march in parades, play canine soccer, and educate the public. Most of my clients go on to intermediate classes, agility, or receive their Canine Good Citizen certification. Many even become therapy dogs. I look forward to speaking with everyone who calls - all phone consultations are free.
