🙉 Listened to the The Humble Hoof the other day, where Prof Andrew van Eps discussed new research assessing the use of x-rays in diagnosing early stage laminitis. The research focuses on the dermal-epidermal line and its relation to the dorsal cortex of the pedal bone. We have been assessing the dermal-epidermal line for most of a decade, so its great to see there is now scientific evidence to support what we've been seeing.
Below is an x-ray of a horse presented for a pre-purchase where the dermal side of the lamellar attachment is wider towards the ground surface. Widening of the dermal side of the lamellar attachment is a sign of subclinical laminitis and a cause for concern. This horse subsequently developed a laminitic episode soon after this, and a hoof care professional was blamed for the episode.

Spring has sprung and we have had a number of new client enquiries and case referrals this past few weeks for horses and ponies with laminitis.
We do keep space each week for emergencies and the like on top of our regular runs.
There is a complexed relationship between the hoof, its conformation and the forces applied to it which affects the entire musculoskeletal system, but deeper complexities are realised when there is asymmetry between pairs of hooves, stated as an uneven pair when there is an angle difference of >1.5....

Massive shoutout to today's awesome clients and their awesome horses. One of the worst days to be a farrier. But we stayed safe and mostly dry despite the conditions and even enjoyed a hot ☕☕ from a few.
