Humans need to eat a balanced diet... and exactly the same applies to dogs.
Nutritionally complete means exactly that - that the recipe contains all the nutrients dogs need, in the right proportions - as set out by FEDIAF.
If a food isn't nutritionally complete, then your dog won't be getting all of the nutrients that they need to thrive and survive.

Dog food is generally made up of a lot of plant-based ingredients ....with varying final amounts of meat or processed animal protein in the final product dependent on the brand/recipe. I.E. Plant proteins (like those found in soyabeans) have been used for decades as complimentary proteins to animal proteins in companion animal diets.
But how digestible are these plant proteins vs meat proteins in pet food?
You know here at Noochy HQ we love a published study (of course we do, we are scientists!)... so here goes
💞 A 2020 retrospective study involving 226 healthy dogs showed that as a class, there was no difference between plant and animal protein digestibility (and yes, in case you are wondering, a protein digestibility study this big involves a LOT of 💩 analysis!!! )
💞 The conclusion of this study? 'Prepared in the distribution chain of these ingredients, and manufactured through the extrusion parameters of these foods, plant proteins are similar to animal proteins in protein digestibility.'
So you can stop worrying. We got you 😉

It’s no secret that plant-based dog food tends to be a bit pricier than meat-based dog food but the question is why? Surely rearing animals for food – housing them, feeding them, giving them medical care, transporting them and, of course, slaughtering them – is far more expensive than simply growing plants for your dog to eat?
Firstly there’s the hidden cost of cheap meat 🐮
Processed animal protein - also known as 'PAP' (i.e. most of the meat that goes into dog food) is cooked at 133C and subjected to 3 x atmospheric pressure in a process called 'rendering'... before it gets sold to pet food companies and ...er.... cooked again... is cheaper than good quality plant protein.
Thats why we had the BSE crisis - because we were feeding rendered cow tissue including brain to cows - because it was cheaper than feeding cows plants!
This is why the EU have just passed a law allowing farmers to feed processed chicken meal to pigs and processed porcine meal to chickens - because it is cheaper to use rendered animal protein in their feed... than plant protein.
Is cheaper always better? No
Is it sustainable or good for the planet? No
Is it healthy for the farm animals? Probably not but they are slaughtered early in their lives so we will probably never know. We'd still be doing it in UK if it wasn't for the BSE crisis!
Is it healthy for your dogs?
We'll leave you to mull it over... but what we will say that the recent large scale published studies show dogs eating nutritionally complete vegan diets indicated vegan dogs live longer and need fewer veterinary interventions than those on meat-based pet food.

Given that plant-based dog food isn’t mainstream at the moment, the manufacturing costs are high. Machines need to be carefully washed down before being used to in order to minimise the risk of cross contamination of the vegan food.

Anyone who has tried to quickly change from one dog food to another because they ran out of food and their normal brand wasn't in stock - will probably have found this out the hard way! Diarrhoea or soft smelly poop +/- vomiting can occur.
It makes sense though - if you were only eating a particular sandwich for 3 months and then you suddenly changed to a different filling it would upset your tummy too 🥪
As a general rule for any change of kibble to another kibble, use a 10 day transition period.
On Day 1 make the new food 10% of the bowl contents (90% being the old food)... building up to 100% new food on Day 10 (swipe for photos)
Haven't got enough of the old food to do a 10 day transition?
Say you only have 4 days left of the old food and you can't get another bag - you want to make the change as gradual and constant as you can while you are building up to 100% over 4 days - for instance 20%, 30%, 50%, 75%,100%. Its not great but you might get away with minimum tummy disruption if you are lucky!

As our ever growing number of pets continues, we need to find more sustainable ways to feed our canine companions.
Researchers from Kansas State University have found that demand from dog, cat and other pet food industries for animal proteins may surpass supply from the United States’ agricultural system.
"The units of pet food produced in the U.S. have been growing at a faster rate than animals slaughtered for human consumption... This is significant because if these growth rates continue there will be a point where there are no longer enough animal protein-based ingredients to meet the needs of pet food production.”
Since the pet food industry relies on the same animal protein sources as people... this may result in competition and supply issues.

How is this possible you might ask… Well - Rearing and feeding livestock so that they can be slaughtered for their meat is resource intensive. Right? ✅
It takes a lot more acres of land and even more litres of water to rear and eat those animals than feeding ourselves and our pets with these plants directly.
Whether your meat-based pet food is premium, or made from meat by-products, it’s all a part of the meat production industry, which, from beginning to end, is one of the biggest carbon dioxide emitters 😱

The sun is shining and we’re all getting some much needed vitamin D. But what is it? Vitamin D is necessary for correct management of phosphorus and calcium levels in both humans and dogs. This includes controlling the absorption of calcium for the intestine, the movement of calcium in and out of the bone, and the amount of calcium excreted by the intestines – in a nutshell, correct levels of Vitamin D keeps human and dog bones strong. It also plays a very important role in correct immune function to fend off infections. Insufficient levels of Vitamin D can lead to several complications including bone disorders such as osteomalacia (softening of bones) and rickets (bone deformities) as well as skin and coat problems, vision problems, infections, dental problems, and kidney disease. Unfortunately for our canine companions, they cannot get vitamin D through sun exposure (even though my dogs love to try) so it needs to be provided by their diet.
