Flight of Fancy Aviaries Perth WA Flight of Fancy is a licensed aviary in Perth WA housing small Australian parrots. I am no longer breeding birds.

The sanctuary is my focus but currently at capacity. It's been a pleasure to know so many ethical breeders and carers over the years.

I’ve bought a growing number of bird stands and bird boxes from Lou, most recently a custom made nest box for Superb parrots. The quality is exceptional and prices reasonable. Highly recommended.

MAGPIES IN PERTH NEED HELP

Please keep an eye out for any wobbly, weak or paralysed magpies in Perth and surrounds.

We are experiencing an increase in cases and reports recently. And sadly have had reports of whole flocks dying in the space of a few days due to the disease.

Good news? It's treatable! But only if the affected birds are taken to a wildlife hospital asap for supportive care.

⚠️Species affected:
-Australian magpies
-Australian ravens
-Mudlarks
-Butcherbird species

All litter can be harmful to wildlife, but this is a reminder that masks come with straps that pose risks in a few different ways.

Dispose of reusable masks with care!

Cutting straps can also help as makes it a bit harder to get tangled, but still possible.

IF YOU SEE ENTANGLED WILDLIFE, CALL WILDCARE ON 9474 9055 FOR ADVICE
FOR WATER BIRDS Western Australian Seabird Rescue CALL 6102 8464 (will help other species where they can)
TAKE TO ANY VET IF YOU CAN SAFELY PICK IT UP AND POP IN A BOX

Summer heat, water bowls and Pseudomas infection.
Worth reading birdlovers.

Pseudomonal infections generally involve the respiratory system. Signs of the infection may include clear or yellowish discharge from one or both nostrils, sneezing, scratching at the nose and ears, and conjuctivitis (red eyes).

METAL WHISK DANGER

METAL WHISK DANGER

This idea using a metal whisk for foraging is currently circulating several popular DIY groups.

Please do NOT use.

While it is a great idea in concept, it is not a safe way to present food foraging.

Due to the nature of their design, whisk wires aren't joined, they just cross, which means there is enough flex for a bird to stick a leg, wing tip or even their head in and get stuck between wires or when the wires cross differently.

Whisks belong in kitchens, not bird cages. A very bad, potentially very dangerous idea.

The good work continues successfully.

Despite our efforts here at Kaarakin, all three of WA’s native black cockatoo species are still very much under threat 😓

This fantastic article by the Starfish outlines some of the major issues facing these gorgeous animals, as well as some of the courses of action we can take to ensure we don’t lose them forever

Make sure to give it a read, the link is included below:

A Parrot's Bill of Rights (Everyone needs to read this)
By Stewart Metz, M.D.
GET TO KNOW ABOUT PARROTS BEFORE YOU BRING ME HOME -
I am not a domesticated pet like a dog or cat. I still have the spirit of the jungle in me. I have special needs which you may find it hard to fill. Please don't learn these too late for my well-being. And please don't acquire one of my cousins wild from the jungle—it will jeopardize his survival and well-being, and that won't be a party for you either!
GIVE ME THE LARGEST HOME POSSIBLE -
I am used to flying through rainforests or savannahs. I have given up this great gift for your pleasure. At the very least, give me enough room to flap my wings and exercise. And I need toys for my amusement and wood to chew—otherwise, I might confuse your Home with the forest and its trees. GIVE ME A NUTRITIOUS DIET -
I need a wide variety of fresh and nutritious foods, even if they take time to prepare. I cannot survive on seeds alone. Take time to learn what my needs, and preferences, are.
LET ME HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE -
I am a gregarious flock animal—but I am not one of you. I need lots of socialization to learn how to act with you, and with my siblings. I also need to have adequate quality time with you every day—no matter what your schedule or other needs are. I am a living, feeling creature. Above all, I need to be able to have complete trust in you, and count on your predictability in looking after me—every day.
LET ME BE CLEAN -
I may like to drop food or even throw it, but I need meticulous cleanliness to be healthy. My skin itches without frequent showers, the barbs of my feathers won't seal if they become oily and, worst of all, I may become ill if my food or water is not always sanitary.
I NEED MY OWN DOCTOR -
You may not understand my physiology and therefore you may not recognize it early on when I get sick. And it may be too late when you do, because I hide my illnesses (remember what I said about my being an animal of the jungle
