My favorite schedule was the year this 4 day cluster was followed by the 4 day cluster in Helena with Wed. off to travel from one venue to the next. But I’m looking forward to trying this in 2025!

I saw this posted on a dog friend’s page and though I’m not familiar with this particular trainer, her comments in this video are spot on. Particularly in a breed like the Mudi, their genetic predispositions, inherited traits and instincts, are definitely something that owners and prospective puppy buyers need to consider thoughtfully and prepare to address with each new Mudi that joins the family.

Too often I get the “yeah, yeah, yeah, I know they bark but they’re just a dog.” Or, “all dogs need exercise, I get it.” What they don’t understand is that the breed makes a difference, that meeting a Mudi’s needs for physical and mental stimulation are not fulfilled by playing fetch in the backyard, which may be perfectly fine for a less driven or less thoughtful breed.

Please consider the information and advice from
your breeder carefully and thoughtfully. What works for many other breeds is dangerously detrimental to the Mudi. Handing a puppy to strangers as “socialization” will likely build distrust in the puppy’s mind, at a time when they really need to be building confidence and trust in their new owner. Pushing a Mudi puppy to accept treats from a stranger is putting pressure on that puppy that they may not be ready for, again creating a lack of confidence and trust in their owner who isn’t acting in their puppy’s best interest. Everyone has training advice, but not all of that advice, and sometimes none of it, takes into consideration the specific needs of a breed such as the Mudi. Peer pressure is real, even as adults. But you are your puppy’s only advocate and you need to do what’s best for your puppy. Avoid comparing your Mudi puppy’s reactions to the outgoing Sporting breed puppies in class, or the tenacious Terrier and Toy breed puppies that have no awareness of their tiny size and want to take on the world. Your Mudi puppy will most likely want to observe his surroundings and those in it. The puppy will find it easier to attempt new skills if he feels safe and at a distance from the other bouncy and loud puppies. That’s ok and to be expected. Protect your Mudi puppy from being overwhelmed and from having negative experiences and in time you will have a Mudi companion that will be by your side through just about anything. But it takes time, thoughtful planning and a devotion to what’s truly best for your Mudi pup in every situation.
