Winter is here.
We were going a bit stir crazy with the ice storm that hit this weekend, powers out in a lot of areas and trees/branches are coming down all over. Silver lining though, this little dog picked up a limit of birds in under an hour today and just wanted more. A little cold snap won’t slow her down.

Widge with a wigeon.
This pretty lady got spayed last week so she’s been taking some time off to recover. We’re in the home stretch though and she’s thoroughly sick of rest days, hopefully we can get her out before the end of season on some more of her namesake birds. Until then Quin will just have to carry the team.

Just hunting and hiking our way through fall.
Two deer down, some good movements of ducks, and we’re only halfway through. Might be time for a fourth freezer.

Not a bad way to start the season at all! We had a great time at Summer Lake and both young dogs got to go out and hunt. Quin took the heavier morning shift and Widge got a few long retrieves in the evening.

Counting down to hunting season, but having some fun in the in between time. MWR dogs are well rounded and able to tackle whatever challenges we throw at them, from frozen duck blinds to thirteen mile mountain hikes.

Watching a dog’s natural instincts combine with a desire to work with you as a team really validates the hours put into training.
Widge and Quin both took to the Upland test with a lot of enthusiasm. They quartered the field with purpose, took direction, and were very steady at each flush. Both of Quin’s birds got away, but Widge was able to retrieve one chukar that was still quite animated. Very nice to see both dogs listening to Andrew and trusting his commands.
Now to find some wild birds to test us all on!

Very pleased with this weekend.
Widge went 2/2 in Finished and Quin went 1/2! And they got to try Upland for the first time, which admittedly was a bit ambitious to do without much preparation. But they both got a pass and showed a real interest in the work. So now we have to figure out how to get them on some wild birds.
Both dogs had really brilliant moments and a couple mistakes, but overall it was a huge success. Good job Andrew, Widge, and Quin!

Team MWR had a good weekend!
Andrew had Friday off so he decided why not head up to the Lower Columbia HRC test. And when they passed Finished, we all figured why not go back again on Saturday?
The girls started to get a bit squirrely by the end of the day though, so we opted to not push our luck and try for a third time Sunday.
Both dogs did really well considering Andrew was gone all week leading up to the tests, very glad to see they have such solid foundations. And the tests were definitely challenging, no gimmes there!
Quin now has two Finished passes and Widge has three.

Happy handler, dog with RBF.
Andrew and Widge got it done this weekend, she is now officially a Master Hunter. We weren’t sure she would ever reach this milestone, or at least not without many more tests under her. Widge went 4/4 in Juniors, 4/4 in Seniors, but she struggled in Masters. With this test she’s now 5/9 and gets to add the coveted MH to her alphabet name.
So proud of this team, she’s our first sport dog and really has been a lot of fun to train. Now to figure out how to display her ribbons and that shiny new title band.

Sometimes Quin just wants to be held, so we indulge her. She is the baby after all.
We’re packing up the whole crew for another hunt test weekend. There’s rain in the forecast and cooler temps which is a good thing considering how dry its been lately. And it’s always a little tough to imagine hunting ducks when it’s 90+ out.

I’m how old?!
That’s right, Mally turned 15 and it’s still kind of hard to believe. The dog that started it all.
Over a thousand retrieves in her hunting career, two wonderful litters of puppies raised, and too many more accomplishments to list.
Cheers to the Betty White of dogs, our Queen, long May she reign.

More fun letters added to their names!
Widge and Quin both got DJ’s this weekend, Dock Juniors. Widge went 4/4 in Junior jumps and Quin went big and got a Senior jump on her last splash. Both got new personal bests and had a ton of fun. They tried Hydro Dash and did well for their first time.
We believe in well rounded dogs that can work and play hard at Murky Water Retrievers.

Sweet little Quin turned two on Saturday and blew up spectacularly at the hardest Master test we’d ever seen. And so did Widge, not a good day for team MWR, but we live and we learn. Tests are meant to be fun, an objective way to challenge the dog and handler on their training. So we’ll keep working and run a few more tests this summer, but it’s probably best to give the puppy some more time to mature. No reason to push such a young dog so hard.

Little Quin is looking pretty in pink.
Somehow she’s turning two on Saturday, just in time for her first Master level hunt test. Widge will be competing too, I can’t wait to see how they do.

Off season? No, we don’t know her.
Widge is busy all of the time, if we never took a rest day she would love that. She can settle and do nothing if we ask, but her preferred lifestyle is go, go, and more GO. Great when we have something to do, less ideal when it’s hailing sideways for the third day in a row and I’m tired of the mud. Dogs always keep things interesting.

HR MWR’s Here Comes the Boom SH.
Quin will be two at the end of April and she’s really a good little dog. We might run her in some Master tests this year, but we’re also content with letting her continue to mature and really solidify her bird work. After her birthday we’ll be doing her health testing, even if we never breed her I’d like to understand the process more. Ideally she’ll come back perfectly sound and the only thing left would be to continue collecting titles on her.
Too many breeders place all of the importance on the stud, even though the dam contributes half of the genetics and all of the rearing. Versatility, health, and drive are what we’re striving for at MWR, so we’d like Quin to compete in multiple sports to assess if she betters the breed.
This weekend we’re taking the girls dock diving to see if we can add more alphabet soup to their names.

Widge got her fourth Master pass this weekend! One more and she’ll have her title, which we honestly were not sure she’d ever achieve. A good lesson for us as amateur trainers, never count a dog out.

Living proof you don’t need a fancy pedigree to be the baddest bird dog in the game.
You’d never know she was fourteen and a half, I think her son has more gray than she does. Mally can’t hear much of anything anymore, but she’s still the queen and she acts like it. And we’ll be her loyal subjects forever.

Tried something new this weekend with the younger dogs, we entered them in a charity keg pull. Both Widge and Quin were in the pony keg class and they seemed to have a blast. Widge got 4th place with a 5.39 second time and Quin wowed us all with a 2nd place 4.88 second pull. She was very proud of her silver medal, as you can tell.
So glad to have such stable dogs, neither had ever pulled anything before this weekend but they ran like they’d been training for weeks. Events like this really showcase how versatile the Labrador breed can be.

They think duck season should be yearlong. But glad to have had a good last weekend. ...
