Can’t believe it’s been over 6 months since Zeke was taken! Had to make a pit stop at the scene of the crime, the first time I’ve stopped there and the first time for Zeke since he was taken.

Zeke got to hang out with the staff for a little bit. They couldn’t have been nicer.

Lot of mixed emotions but mostly happiness 😊.

Part 16
The Exchange

I’ve put off writing this part mainly because I knew it would be the hardest to write. All the hard work and dedication my family put towards finding Zeke had finally come to a head. As I walked up to the woman who was holding Zeke, my emotions were like nothing I had ever experienced. The interaction I had with her was easily one of the strangest and most unique interactions I have ever had with another human being.

I was so happy to see Zeke again, I was having a hard time holding back the tears. At the same time, I had such anger and resentment toward the woman that had him. My first inclination was to ask her why she didn’t call, and why she put me and my family through hell. I thought to myself that at this point it didn’t matter, and she had done the right thing to finally call me and get Zeke back where he belonged. Ultimately, just after a few seconds the anger turned to sadness. I could tell she had formed an emotional attachment to my dog, and honestly, I began to feel sorry for her. I could tell she had led a life far different from my own and I tried to prevent myself from passing judgement and trying to understand something that ultimately likely would never make sense to me.

The first thing she said to me was that she would never hurt a dog. I knew at that point the news and social media pressure had gotten to her and most likely ultimately caused her to do the right thing. I told her I could tell from the surveillance video I didn’t think she was out to hurt my dog. She never mentioned the reward, and it was in fact me that brought it up. I told her there was a reward for the dog and asked her if she wanted it. She replied anything would help her. I decided to give her half because that is what my heart told me to do. As strange as it may sound, for me it was very hard not to give the full amount and go back on my promised amount. In my heart I don’t think it was ever her intention to take Zeke simply for a reward.
I said my goodbyes after taking back Zeke and just like that it was over. I held him tighter than I ever have, and made my way back to my car…..

Part 15
One Last Road Block

My father-in-law and I made our way to Milwaukee. When we were about fifteen minutes from the destination, I called the police to notify them I was ready for the es**rt (they told me to give them a heads up when I was close). The dispatcher told me the officers were busy and would be unable to help me for at least several hours. I had just driven seven hours and was told I’d have to wait another three or four hours for their help. I was extremely upset but not surprised. I hung up the phone and called the woman who had Zeke to explain the situation. She understood why I would not feel safe to go alone, and she had the suggestion of meeting at the police station which made sense to me.

As I drove into the precinct, I realized very quickly this was not a good area of Milwaukee. I really couldn’t tell you much about the city or what I saw until I got out of the car. I was in such a weird state of exhaustion mixed with pure adrenaline and nerves knowing I was about to see Zeke. I arrived at the station first and walked in to let the officers know what I was doing. When I walked in there were three officers sitting at their desks. They immediately asked if I was the person who had called earlier and had come to Milwaukee to get my dog. I told them I was, and one officer said, “We thought so, we have heard your story and it's fu***ng crazy.” I said, “tell me about it, I’m living it.”

I told them I would wait outside the front door for the woman, and if they could just keep an eye on us and make sure everything went smoothly it would be much appreciated. They didn’t seem too keen on getting up and going outside with me, so I headed out the front door. I told my father-in-law to wait by the car and to video the reunion and interaction, which he did. Within the next minute or two a call pulled up to the station, and I instantly recognized the woman driving the car…

Part 14
To Milwaukee!

Now that I knew where Zeke was, it was time to start letting everyone know. I called Val first as she was working in the hospital that night. She sounded shocked when I broke the news and told her how it all went down. I texted my family and my in-laws to celebrate the good news. Part of me knew I was in the home stretch, but also knew there was still work to do.

I didn’t know much about Milwaukee and had never been there. My first inclination was to fly, until I looked it up and realized it was only about a 7-hour drive. I talked with Val and made the decision that I would drive first thing in the morning as soon as she got home. I tried to get some sleep but obviously didn’t with my level of nerves and excitement. As soon as the kids woke up, I shared the news, to which of course they were ecstatic… Zeke was coming home!

As I started the drive to Milwaukee, I began calling those that had helped me along the way. The gas station general manager, the president of Lost Dogs of Fort Wayne, my contact at Ft. Wayne news, and the Indian Hill rangers. Luckily my father-in-law was in a place where he could meet me halfway to Milwaukee so I wouldn’t have to go alone. As I made the phone calls, I began getting more and more emotional with what was happening. I called Val, and finally let the emotions go. I couldn’t hold back the tears, excitement, and nervous energy of what the prior week had done to me and my family. I had blocked most of my emotions to help me get through the week and complete the task at hand, and my mind and body was finally telling me it had had enough.

After a little while on the road I figured it would be a good idea to call the Milwaukee police department to ask for advice and to give them a heads up that I was coming. When I spoke with the dispatcher and gave her the address, she said under no circumstances should I go to that part of town by myself. With the potential of a lot of money to exchange hands it would not be safe, and she recommended having a police es**rt with me at the time of the exchange. My excitement turned to nerves as I realized I could be headed towards a dangerous situation…

Have to share this story of Henry, a dog that was lost in my area for 58 DAYS! Having Zeke missing for a week was excruciating, can only imagine what this must have been like. Just an amazing story of perseverance with a great ending and a great reunion video at the end! ❤️ 🐾

Part 13
“Happy Birthday”

At 11:45, fifteen minutes before the end of my birthday, I received the call. The voice on the other end was male. He said, “Are you Zeke’s dad?” I was in shock. This was different than the other calls I had received. When other people had called, I could hear the doubt in their voice if the dog they had was in fact Zeke. This was different, the caller sounded sure in his tone and voice. My newfound investigator persona immediately took over and asked for whatever information I could get. I had promised in my news releases and social media campaign I would not ask questions, but I needed some basics. I started with his name and location and asked how he had come into possession of Zeke, since on the video there were clearly two females who had taken him. He said it was sister who had picked up Zeke when they were travelIng back from visiting friends in the area and hen he mentioned where he was, I was absolutely floored. He said they were in Milwaukee, far from the Indiana gas station where Zeke was taken.

I needed confirmation this was Zeke. I’d ask if they could send pictures so I could confirm it was Zeke. I also asked about the cyst on the back of his neck, which they confirmed. They hung up and sent me pictures, one which included a picture of the collar with his name and my phone number on it. It was at this moment it finally hit me I had found him. I called them back and said I would find a way to be there tomorrow.

I know it seems weird I didn’t ask why they didn’t call me or what had taken them so long to reach out but to be honest at that moment I really didn’t care. The had called me and I knew where Zeke was, which was a total 180 from only a few minutes before. The relief and joy were indescribable. No mention of the reward was made or discussed though it was clearly on my mind. They repeatedly mentioned how they had taken good care of Zeke and he was doing well, which did provide me some comfort. I double checked the information I had regarding their address and contact information and hung up. I began texting and calling love ones to get the word out, of course starting with Val…

Part 12
"Let’s Go Viral"

Val and I were planning on going to dinner around 6:30 for my birthday Friday night. I sat in the kitchen watching the Fort Wayne news WANE 15 and waiting for their report on Zeke. When it finally came on, I was pleased to see they reported on everything I needed them to. They hit all the major points we had discussed; they discussed thew $2000 reward, that I was not interested in pressing charges, and that the surveillance footage was released. I wasn’t sure how comfortable they would be releasing the images of the women on the news and was not surprised when they didn’t. They showed a generic video of Zeke in the parking lot being chased by people who were there, but it would be impossible to know who was responsible for taking him.

https://www.wane.com/news/local-news/cincinnati-family-offering-2k-for-return-of-lost-dog-surveillance-video-released/

I knew my next steps. I would need to augment the news with my own social media drive and put out the images of those who took Zeke. I had finally completed a picture of what had happened and was confident in getting the word out. I took my laptop to my birthday dinner and spent most of the time compiling all the stills and videos I needed to release to social media.

By the time I got home it was roughly 8:00 o’clock or so and was ready for the social media onslaught. Val left for the hospital as she was on call that night. I put the kids to bed, turned on the UC football game, and began posting. I posted to any site I could, and the post began spreading like wildfire. I stayed glued to my computer for the next several hours, answering questions and phone calls as they came in. I had several people send me pictures of dogs that looked like Zeke but were not him. I was so wired that sleep wasn’t even on my radar. At 11:45 pm, 15 minutes before the end of my birthday, I received a phone call from a number I didn’t recognize and wasn’t going to ignore it. I had made that mistake once in this adventure…

Part 11
“Fort Wayne News”

Friday is one of the days I spend in the operating room. I had multiple small surgeries scheduled that day, which also happened to be my birthday. I started the morning by calling my contact at the Fort Wayne news station WANE 15 to make sure he had received the email. When I spoke with him, I discussed the most important things I wanted to get across in the news story.

1.)The reward – I had already mentioned a $1000 reward for the safe return of Zeke. While I was on the phone with the news, I decided to increase it to $2000, partly for shock value to increase their interest, and to make a statement I was willing to do anything to bring Zeke home.

2.)Pressing charges – I wanted to make sure the news put out that I was not interested in pressing charges, though the threat was there. I didn’t want the people who took Zeke to feel threatened or to get scared which could lead to them harming him or getting rid of him altogether. I wanted them to know I just wanted his safe return, and there would be NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

3.)Surveillance footage – I needed the news to let the public know the surveillance footage had been released. I gave the news station a complete breakdown of the footage, but I knew they may not be comfortable showing all of it. I figured whatever they didn’t show I could supplement on my social media and hopefully make viral to get the word out.

As I hung up with the news station, I continued my surgeries. In between cases I was able to stream the Fort Wayne News on my phone and I anxiously awaited their story. When they ran the noon news cycle, they ran a generic story about Zeke but didn’t make any mention of what we had discussed. I called the station to ask what their plans were, knowing if they weren’t going to go any further, I would have to release it on my own. They told me they were trying to figure out a way to get the footage to be usable, since it was in such an odd format.

I called my family and made sure they wouldn’t share any of the images until the news station had released their part of the story. I was hoping to simply share the news station links as opposed to sharing the surveillance footage on my own. I continued to work and left the hospital late in the afternoon. I anxiously drove home for my birthday dinner and was going to give the news station one more cycle to see what they would run…

Part 10
The Footage

I headed to my friend Chad’s place to break down the footage. It would take us roughly three hours to pour over the surveillance video and create a picture of what happened at the gas station. Several white claws were had and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It is important to note I had kept a lot of what had happened to Zeke private within my local community and friends. The main reason is I knew it wouldn’t help with the task at hand. Given everything had occurred in Ft. Wayne I didn’t want people in Cincinnati asking me about Zeke wherever I went. I needed every second of free time devoted to finding him and the most efficient ways of doing that. Chad was one of our first friends in Cincinnati to really learn the details. He knew it was serious when he overheard my conversations with the Ft. Wayne news media that night.

The footage was nothing short of amazing. The individuals were clearly identifiable, and it was obvious what I had been told previously was not accurate. Anyone who knew these individuals would easily be able to recognize them. I had also been told the women had stuck around looking for us at the gas station for “a long time” according to the police. This obviously was not accurate. When you look at the footage you realize the videos are all occurring simultaneously at different locations of the gas station. From the time they picked up Zeke to driving off was only a matter of minutes (2 minutes and 40 seconds to be exact).

After going through the footage, it became more apparent what had happened. I could almost see the woman who picked up Zeke fall in love with him. The way she held him and was petting him for the brief time she was there I didn’t see any indication she would cause harm to my dog. It was almost like watching someone else fall in love with your dog in real time. Zeke had been well cared for and in a loving family for more than eleven years, so it’s not surprising someone else would be drawn to him.

The path forward became increasingly clear to me. Chad and I created a document laying out exactly what had happened with timestamps for the media. When we were finished, I sent an email to my contact at the Ft. Wayne news media WANE 15. I went to sleep that night more confident I could pressure the women and force their hand to give back Zeke. I woke up the next morning on my birthday and headed to work, with a full day of surgeries scheduled. What a memorable birthday it would be…

Part 9
“Homefront”

While driving home from work on Thursday, I got the email that would finally be the biggest breakthrough in my search for Zeke. I got the email from Officer Lang with the Rangers that he had the footage. I was extremely nervous and excited to get home to see what the footage showed. I heard so many mixed things, and I couldn’t believe I was finally going to see it for myself.

It’s important to take a moment to realize how difficult the week was on our family. With my constant attention towards getting Zeke back I really wasn’t present at home. Thursday was our night to take all the kids to gym class. With the footage now in hand, I knew I needed to get through it as soon and as quickly as possible.

When I got home and told Val I had the footage she already knew what was coming next. I wouldn’t be able to help take the kids to gym that night. Needless to say, Val was our rock that kept our family functioning that week. Without her, it would have been impossible to put in the required work to get Zeke back. We kept telling our kids that lots of people were looking for Zeke and that we were going to get him back.

As I got home, I realized I couldn’t open the footage on my MacBook, so I called my good friend Chad to see if he could. He was able to open the files. I told him I would be over shortly, and we could go through the footage together.

I called my contact at WANE news and told him I had the security footage. I said I would break it down and send him a summary that night once I had a chance to go through it. As Val left for gym with the kids, I headed to Chad’s to try and get a clear picture of what had happened…

Part 8b
“The Prostate Biopsy”

I started the prostate biopsy just as any other case would start. I injected numbing medication in the patient to help make the procedure less painful and uncomfortable. I’ll spare you the details of a prostate biopsy (feel free to google if you are so inclined). As I finish injecting the numbing medication, my phone rings. I never have my ringer on during patient encounters, but this week was different, as there was zero chance of me missing a phone call while Zeke was gone.

I apologized to the patient and let him know I am expecting a very important phone call. I had two assistants in the room with me during the procedure and I tell one its ok to answer the phone, she does and says, “This is Dr. Allen’s phone”. I see a worried look overtake her face as she whispers, “it’s the police.” This is not something you want a patient to hear during a procedure. I apologized to the patient and said I had a family emergency I was currently dealing with. I told my assistant to take a number so I could call the sergeant back in about 5 minutes (prostate biopsies are very quick). My assistant explains to the sergeant that I am in the middle of a procedure and would have to call him back. She tells me he is going off duty and won’t be able to call me back until tomorrow and I can’t call him back.

Waiting a full day to speak my mind was not going to happen. I profusely apologized to the patient and explained I had to take the call. Luckily, I was at a breaking point in the procedure where I could step away for a minute, so I took the call outside the room.

I immediately expressed my displeasure with the way things were being handled. I told him I had heard the security footage was not grainy and would be useful to track these women down. I explained this was theft and I wanted it classified as such. I explained I had been to my local law enforcement, they had agreed with me, and I had been in contact with a lawyer (well sort of as the lawyer was my brother). Finally, the sergeant agreed this was a case of theft, and he said he would be ok with getting me the footage. I told him my local police were already working on it, and I would let him know if I needed his help any further.

I had accomplished the main thing I wanted from him, to finally agree this was a theft. I needed the threat of charges to help the women know what they had done would not be without repercussions if I wanted to go that route. I collected myself (I was very worked up from the conversation) and returned to the biopsy to finish the procedure. Only a few hours later, a major success from all the hard work would come to light….

Part 8a
“The Prostate Biopsy”

I went to work Thursday hopeful that the Indian Hill Rangers would get me access to the security footage. Around this time, I had decided to offer a reward of $1000 for the safe return of Zeke, with no questions asked. My father-in-law went to New Haven to hang posters of Zeke which were made with the help of the Lost Dogs of Ft. Wayne Facebook group. We used the flyer they had made online for Zeke.

Early in the day I received a text message from the general manager at the Flying J and he was quite upset at the way his store was being discussed online. There was a lot of negative comments especially because of what happened there on Sunday. Some from me as well as some from others who had interacted with the store employees on Sunday. I knew about these comments from Sunday, but also knew I had been nothing but complimentary towards him and the way he had personally helped me with whatever he could do. Instead of texting I immediately called him back to discuss the issues.

I explained I could not control what was said on Sunday but expressed to him that he had been nothing but helpful since that day and I would do whatever I could to make sure others understood that once I got in touch with him, I had no issues with the gas station whatsoever. Also, in fairness to him and his store, I didn’t reach out to him until Monday, the day after Zeke went missing. After talking, he seemed to be better about the situation. I then asked him about the security footage again. I asked specifically about the quality. The police had emphasized how poor and grainy the footage was. He told me if you knew the people in the video you would be able to recognize them.

It was at this point I began to get angry. Someone wasn’t telling me the truth with respect to the footage. I decided to put a call in to the New Haven police, this time going up the chain and asking for the sergeant. The dispatcher told me they would get my message out and I should look for a call back over the next couple of hours. I hung up the phone and continued my workday. Thursday is one of my office procedure days, and I had a couple of prostate biopsies scheduled. About an hour later, I walked into a room to perform what would turn out to be one of the most unique ones I have ever done…

Part 7
“The Lawyer and Ranger”

I was feeling very dejected after getting denied my request for the security footage on Wednesday afternoon. I knew I needed to change directions but not give up on getting the footage. I decided to call my brother, who is a lawyer, to get some advice. He told me to write the Pilot J a stern email requesting that all footage be saved related to the incident, pending further legal litigation. This served two purposes; first it ensured the footage would not be deleted by the Pilot J corporation, and second it gave them a signal that I was not playing around with this matter. Shortly after I sent the email, I got a response from their head of IT. He stated in so many words that if an officer emailed him directly, he would release the footage to law enforcement.

I would be lying if I said my first thought that went through my head was not somehow to impersonate a police officer to get this footage. I would do anything to get Zeke back. After a second or two I realized prison probably wasn’t a good idea and I needed to find someone else to help me. One of my co-workers is a former police officer so I reached out to her for advice while driving home. She had a great idea of reaching out to my local police (the Indian Hill Rangers) in Cincinnati, far removed from New Haven where the incident occurred. I headed straight to the Ranger station after work.

I met with the officer at the ranger station and told him the whole story. He immediately told me this was a case of theft as I had thought. He asked what I would do with the footage and if I would use social media to get the word out, which I replied yes. He said he would see what he could do. I gave him the email for the Pilot J head of IT and for the first time I felt a glimmer of hope…….

PART 6
"Helpless"

I touched base with the New Haven Police Wednesday morning. He said he had been to the Flying J and seen the security footage. He reiterated what I already knew. The women had picked up Zeke, asked around if it was anyone’s dog, and drove off. He was unable to make out the license plate of the car. The police once again stated they wouldn’t classify what happened as a theft, and I really didn’t understand why. It had now been several days since the dog was taken and no one had reached out to me. I asked about the security footage which he said was grainy and not worth the time to investigate further, and once again stated he wouldn’t grant me access to it.

He then said there was nothing else he can do for me, essentially telling me he was off the case. I was confused and not happy with his decision. For the first time I felt pretty helpless, and needed to direct my energy in a different direction.

I knew I needed to see the security footage. Even though the officer was telling me it was grainy I needed to see it for myself. I wanted to see the people who took Zeke, even if the footage wasn’t great. I decided to reach out to the corporate offices of Flying J to see what they could do. When I spoke to the receptionist on the phone they directed me to formal request form online, which I promptly filled out. Within the hour I was denied my request. They responded that a valid subpoena or formal request directly from a Law Enforcement Agency is required for the release of any stills or video footage. Not a good combination given the New Haven Police had just told me they wouldn’t request the footage……

Part 5
“Newsflash”

I started Tuesday by touching base with both the New Haven Police and the GM from the Flying J gas station. Jerry told me he wouldn’t be at work that day and he was the only one who had access to the security footage. This unfortunately meant that the New Haven police would not be able to view the video until the following day.

When I spoke with the officer, he told me he had spoken with Kevin, the gentleman who called me when Zeke first went missing. He reiterated what I already knew regarding the women taking Zeke. He said he would stop by the Flying J the following day to view the security footage. I briefly mentioned me being allowed to see the footage, which he immediately told me he would not allow, and it would have to be between me and the Flying J. I was still hopeful he would have the tools to identify the women after he viewed the footage.

Feeling like I wasn’t making much progress and was somewhat uncomfortable the way the police investigation was going, I decided to open another path to get the word out. Figuring my story was already interesting enough, I decided to reach out to the Fort Wayne media. I contacted the WANE 15 newsroom and pitched my story. My contact told me he would see what he could do to help me out.

To my shock, within the next hour or so, my story would be up the WANE 15 webpage. This was the first time I felt a victory in my search for Zeke. Honestly, the little victories are what pushed me and kept me going amongst all the other hurdles I ran into.

They kept the details out of the story, which really played to my benefit. The more interest and questions posed to the public would keep the case interesting, and in the news. This would become extremely important later in the week. As Tuesday passed, and still no attempt to reach me after 72 hours, I was more confident that whoever had Zeke had no intentions of giving him back.
