Gokularanjana das Prabhu memories vol 3 tape 44:

With his cane Srila Prabhupada pointed to the skyline and said, ‘Do you see this city? This city and all cities will collapse very soon. Do you know why?’ Everyone hesitated, wondering. But Tamal Krishna quickly said, ‘Because the people here don’t know how to grow food.’ Srila Prabhupada said, ‘Yes.’ Growing food is the whole purpose of our farm communities and we are still trying to grasp their importance.”

*Why they are not attracted to live in the farm and be self-independent and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa?*
~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Prabhupāda:* So new... When they are trained up, they can come, live, especially gṛhasthas. My point is whether the farm is attractive. Not very much?
*Yogeśvara:* The potential is wonderful.
*Prabhupāda:* And therefore I'm asking. Potential is wonderful, so *why they are not attracted to live in the farm and be self-independent and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa?* That is our farm project. Our farm project is they should be satisfied with simple living. That is nice living. If you get milk, if you get fruit, if you get grain and open air, it is very healthy life. Why they should not be attracted?
*Yogeśvara:* It is still the beginning, and because it's the beginning, it is a little difficult sometimes.
*Prabhupāda:* That may be. But this should be our aim. We should not be attracted by the modern city life. Simplified life. Save time and utilize for advancing in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That is perfect life. Just like Vṛndāvana. *Vṛndāvana life means agriculturist—cowherd boys, uneducated girls, cows and calves and tree, fruits. This is Vṛndāvana.* The center is Kṛṣṇa.
*Yogeśvara:* Simple living.
*Prabhupāda:* But they are the topmost devotees. *These [chuckling] uneducated, without any town life, cow-men, they are Kṛṣṇa's best friend.* Unsophisticated, no education, but love intense—that is perfect. That attracted Kṛṣṇa more. Vṛndāvanaṁ parityajya pādam ekaṁ na kartavya[?]... Kṛṣṇa is so much attached to Vṛndāvana that He goes nowhere. What is that? *They are not educated girls, up-to-date fashion, [indistinct] or nothing. Crude.* As soon as there was blowing of the flute, immediately they began to run towards Kṛṣṇa. Somebody is taking care of children, somebody is engaged in boiling milk, and somebody was even lying down with her husband. Still, immediately. Very crude, unsophisticated, but intense love for Kṛṣṇa—that is Vṛndāvana. *We want to introduce this farm project means intense love for Kṛṣṇa.* And other things—very simple: little milk, little food grain, little vegetable, that's all. And that is very nice. If you get fresh vegetable, fresh milk and food grain, what do you want more? And from milk you can prepare so many nice preparations, unlimited number, all very palatable, sweet. This civilization we want to introduce, not so-called rascal civilization and become implicated in this cycle of birth and death. This is not civilization. This is killing civilization............. Such a rascal civilization. So we have to introduce real civilization. *Therefore we are struggling so hard. So make in such a way.*
SB 7.14.9
Srimad-Bhagavatam
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
mṛgoṣṭra-khara-markākhu-
sarīsṛp khaga-makṣikāḥ
ātmanaḥ putravat paśyet
tair eṣām antaraṁ kiyat
SYNONYMS
mṛga—deer; uṣṭra—camels; khara—asses; marka—monkeys; ākhu—mice; sarīsṛp—snakes; khaga—birds; makṣikāḥ—flies; ātmanaḥ—of one's self; putra-vat—like the sons; paśyet—one should see; taiḥ—with those sons; eṣām—of these animals; antaram—difference; kiyat—how little.
TRANSLATION
One should treat animals such as deer, camels, asses, monkeys, mice, snakes, birds and flies exactly like one's own son. How little difference there actually is between children and these innocent animals.
From Purport: For example, in the agricultural fields there may be many mice, flies and other creatures that disturb production, and sometimes they are killed by pesticides. In this verse, however, such killing is forbidden. Every living entity should be nourished by the food given by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Human society should not consider itself the only enjoyer of all the properties of God; rather, men should understand that all the other animals also have a claim to God's property. In this verse even the snake is mentioned, indicating that a householder should not be envious even of a snake. If everyone is fully satisfied by eating food that is a gift from the Lord, why should there be envy between one living being and another?
Lessons from Govardhana-puja: Create Vrndavana, happy life
Create Vrndavana. Keep Krsna here, cows here, calves here; produce your own
food. It will become Vrndavana. This is Vrndavana. Where there is Krsna,
where there are cows, where there is agriculture, that is Vrndavana. See the
life of Krsna. He advised His father to worship Govardhana Hill. He said,
"My dear father, Govardhana Hill is giving grass to our cows. Why you are
arranging for the demigod worship, Indra? There is Govardhana-puja." So you
should produce enough food grains, enough fodder for the cows, and live
peacefully, chant Hare Krsna, make this life. At least one life we should do
like that. It is very happy life.
Putting on washed clothing, being always pure and being adorned with turmeric, sandalwood pulp and other auspicious items, before breakfast one should worship the cows, the brāhmaṇas, the goddess of fortune and the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Lord Kṛṣṇa as Govinda is more inclined to the brāhmaṇas and the cows, indicating thereby that human prosperity depends more on these two items, namely brahminical culture and cow protection. Lord Kṛṣṇa is never satisfied where these are lacking.
Purport Srimad Bhagwatam 1.8.21
All the disease conditions you see in your cows is just an expression of our expectations from them.
They are not allowed to do what they are designed to do.
They are made to do what we have designed.
As a result they express their inability to process our designs in the form of symptoms called disease conditions. So ,without having a shift from our designs to their purpose,no system of medicine may have the capacity to cure these diseases.
So it is we who need the counselling.
*PRODUCE GREENNESS EVERYWHERE, EVERYWHERE FARM, FARM, FARM, FARM*
*At any cost do it...*
-------------------------------------
"Everywhere I go and say, "How these rascals...?" So much land is lying, and these rascals are not developing. And they are making... What is that? Coal stone. Coal.
They are interested with these bricks and stones, not green vegetables. Such a rascal government. Give them facility. We know how to do it.
Annād bhavanti bhūtāni parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ, yajñād bhavati parjanyaḥ [Bg. 3.14].
Let them engage in kīrtana.
There will be more water for gardening, and it will be moist, and then produce fodder for the animals and food for you.
And animal gives you milk.
That is Vṛndāvana life.
And they are absorbed in this so-called opulence.
Kṛṣṇa has taken birth. They are bringing so many nice, pleasant foodstuff, coming very well-dressed and ornamented.
These are description. In the morning we were reading.
How they were happy, the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana with Kṛṣṇa and living and cows.
That I want to introduce.
At any cost do it and...
Don't bother about big, big buildings. It is not required.
Useless waste of time.
Produce (food)
Make the whole field green. See that. Then whole economic question solved. Then you eat sumptuous. Eat sumptuously. The animal is happy.
The animal even does not give milk; let them eat and pass stool and urine.
That is welcome. After all, eating, they will pass stool. So that is beneficial, not that simply milk is beneficial.
Even the stool is beneficial. Therefore I am asking so much here and..., "Farm, farm, farm, farm."
That is not my program---Kṛṣṇa's program.
Annād bhavanti bhūtāni [Bg. 3.14].
Produce greenness everywhere, everywhere.
Vṛndāvana. It is not this motorcar civilization."
-----------------------------------
(Srila Prabhupada, 27th May, 1977, Vrindavana)
18/09/2020
I have already discussed in my Srimad-Bhagavatam, for economic problem one requires a little land and a few cows. Then the whole economic problem is solved. We should use our time for elevating ourselves in Krsna consciousness [rather] than for so-called economic development. (SPL to Hamsaduta, 11th January, 1968)
17/09/2020
Regarding keeping the cows, unless there is sufficient grazing land and cultivation, it is very difficult. But there has been some discussion about having a farm in California. You may write to Ramesvara Maharaja and Satsvarupa Maharaja in this regard. In any case the cows must be protected and cared for. If the farm is gotten then they can be shifted there, otherwise continue to care for them as best you can." (SPL to Candravali dasi, 28th March,1977)
Krishna taught Gau-raksha by personal example and that is our ideal standard, the cow is not just a milk-giving animal but is the foundation of our way of life, devotion, economy, culture and the backbone of sustainable agriculture.
