Fun fact: Dogs love pumpkin! Not only is it a tasty treat, but it’s packed full of fibre which can be the perfect remedy for upset tums. Before they tuck in, check out our tips below.

🎃 For a medium-sized dog, we recommend around four to five tablespoons a couple of times a week as too much could cause constipation.

🎃 For Kong feeders, you can mix it with natural yogurt, wet dog food or other fruit and veg to your dog’s taste.

🎃 The pumpkin should always be fresh and make sure you remove the rind, stem and pulp, as it may cause intestinal blockages.

What type of dog water bowl do you use? 🐶💧

The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🦠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteria🧫 that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.

So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!

In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!

Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowls🥣 can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis🙀: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the nose👃🏼 and adjacent areas with pink blotches.

In 1925, diphtheria affected an isolated village in Alaska. Due to the severe cold, it was not possible to transport the medicines by plane and ship, so the transport of the medicines to the town of Noma was organized with the help of mushers (guides or drivers of a dog sled team).

About 1800 kilometers had to be covered in five days. There were several teams and they took turns on different sections. The Norwegian Gunnar Kasen and his main dog Balto were the first to bring the serum to the village.

It turned out that Kasen had not made a mistake in choosing the main dog, because when the team had an accident, Balto helped his musher, saving him from certain death.

When the storm reached its peak and visibility became low they crossed 85 km. Balto is considered a hero, and in 1925 a monument was erected to him in Central Park in New York.

He was truly a hero, like all the other dogs during this mission. However, the dog that did the most difficult part of the work was Togo who crossed the longest distance (418 kilometers). He was part of Leonardo Seppala team of dogs. Togo is the husky, in the photo.

Togo was already known for his incredible leadership qualities, which he demonstrated again in this race.

The mission was successfully completed and these brave dogs saved numerous lives.

Hoppy Rabbit Awareness Week! 🐰🐰🐰

The theme of this year’s RAW is all about Room for Rabbits! Whether you keep indoor or outdoor rabbits, they all need to be able to act out their natural behaviours, so it’s up to us to make sure their housing is up to scratch! 🏡

First of all, every rabbit needs room to roam. We recommend that every rabbit enclosure is at least 3 x 2 x 1m in height. This is to make sure they have enough space to run, jump, and binky.

As rabbits are sociable animals and should always be kept in neutered pairs, having even more space is important. The more buns you are lucky to have in your home, the more space they will need 💛🐇🐇

Arthritis can be a common problem amongst rabbits.

While you might expect to see arthritis in older rabbits (6+ years), many rabbits can suffer with it from the age of 2, especially giant rabbit breeds.

Arthritis can be very painful, but as a prey animal rabbits will hide their pain, so you might not realise they are suffering until they are in a lot of distress.

Please visit our website to find out how to spot the signs of arthritis and how you can help: https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-health/illness/rabbit-arthritis/

How does your dog's digestion actually work?

Are they really wolves on the inside? Do they actually have a stomach pH lower than humans? Can they digest carbs, or not? Do they have a 'short' intestinal system, and what does that even mean?

I see a huge amount of opinions online about this subject but what is the truth?

Read my latest article in Animal Journal to find out!
