GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL

Geranium, or Pelargonium graveolens, has been used historically for hormone balance, inflammation, bleeding, and bone fractures. It has been used for centuries as a perfume due to its strong floral aroma. Geranium has antibacterial, anti-depressant, astringent, antiseptic, insect repelling, and sedative properties. This EO has been studied extensively in animals and it is safe to use on all species. I do recommend starting out with it diluted on small animals like dogs, cats or pocket pets. It can be applied topically, blended with other oils, or diffused. Internal use is generally not indicated with this essential oil.

Geranium Essential Oil is is one I always carry with me everywhere. It is one of my "must have" essential oils both for myself and with animals in my emergency kit. This oil has an exceptional ability to slow or stop bleeding and speed up wound healing. This makes it a favorite in acute injuries resulting in cuts, bruises or abrasions. It is helpful after an animal has a failed pregnancy. It is a go-to oil for ringworm. It is supportive of the liver and gall bladder, and helpful in conditions such as hepatitis and fatty liver disease, supports pancreatic stimulation, and improves dilation of the bile ducts which aids in liver detoxification. A sesquiterpene alcohol from this EO has been studied and proven effective as a repellent of the lone star tick - equally as effective as DEET!

This oil is amazing for emotional support as well. Not only does it help with the physical aspects of hormonal imbalance, but it can help with nervous tension, depression, feelings of abandonment or distrust, and it promotes feelings love and forgiveness. It has been said to help release negative memories and reinforce peaceful joy.

This oil can be blended with many other oils including lavender, marjoram, frankincense, myrrh, or helichrysum.

Dogs: Dilute 1 drop EO in 25-50 drops carrier oil for topical application
Cats: Dilute 1 drop EO in 50-85 drops carrier oil for topical application
Birds: Dilute 1 drop EO in 4 oz. (120 mL) or distilled water and use as a feather mist
Pocket Pets: Dilute 1 drop in 100 drops of carrier oil or use water diffusion
Goats, Sheep, Horses, cattle, and other large animals: 1-6 drops topically along the spine or directly on area of concern, no dilution necessary (start with 1 drop with goats/ sheep).

For difficult cases of ringworm, Geranium EO may be applied neat if necessary safely under close observation.

Now let's talk about BASIL!

Historically, Basil has been a go-to for migraines, respiratory issues, digestive problems, kidney ailments, poisonous insect and snake bites, fevers, and malaria. Its chemical composition is primarily alcohols, giving it powerful anti-histamine properties, which is a key use for animals. Basil is also a potent antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, anticatarrhal, and antidepressant.

I use this oil in many of my horse protocols, usually topically, but it can be given orally as well (2 drops per 1000 lbs twice daily). For dogs, be sure to dilute it 1:20 and use only 1-2 drops of this mixture either orally with food or topically along the spine. I tend to avoid using this oil with cats or animals with seizures, but it can be used with cats on occasion if highly diluted—1 drop per 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. This oil can also be diffused, which is one of my favorite ways to use it.

Basil is helpful for chronic respiratory conditions, insect bites, wasp stings, as an insect repellent, memory loss in canine cognitive disorder, insomnia, cardiovascular support, and muscle/joint support.

Let's not forget the emotional impact of this oil. Basil is the Oil of Renewal, making it very helpful for low energy, adrenal fatigue, addiction recovery, and anxiety due to feeling overwhelmed.

This oil mixes very well with Bergamot, Lavender, Helichrysum, or (my personal favorite) Geranium.

Arborvitae oil comes from the leaves and twigs of the western red cedar tree, part of the cypress family. It has a wonderfully grounding aroma and is often called the "Tree of Life."

This oil is a powerful cleansing and purifying agent, offering protection against seasonal threats and acting as a natural insect repellent. Arborvitae is known for its antibacterial and intense antifungal properties, and it may even help with certain types of cancer, like colo-rectal and melanoma. Emotionally, it brings a sense of peace and calm. It's also very nourishing for the skin and can help with hair loss, especially if the hair loss is due to ringworm or rain scald, warts, and other skin issues. For small animals like dogs and cats that might be sensitive to Melaleuca, Arborvitae is my go-to alternative.

Here's how to use Arborvitae with animals:

For horses and cattle: Apply topically along the spine without dilution, or mix with a carrier oil to a 1-2% dilution and spray it on topically. This same dilution can be used on dogs.

For dogs under 15 pounds: Dilute 1 drop of oil in 1-2 mL of carrier oil and apply topically.

For dogs over 15 pounds: Dilute 1 drop of oil in 20 drops of carrier oil and apply topically.

For cats and smaller animals: Diffusion is preferred. For topical application, dilute 1 drop in 15 mL of carrier oil. A little goes a very long way with this one!

The more I use Arborvitae oil, the more I love it. It’s safe for all species, but use caution around birds. This oil truly is amazing!

I am completely obsessed with Cardamom lately! It’s an absolute powerhouse for supporting the digestive, respiratory, and immune systems.

Historically, Cardamom has been used for a variety of ailments, from intestinal and pulmonary issues to digestive and urinary concerns, epilepsy, and heart disorders. It’s known for its antibacterial, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, decongestant, diuretic, expectorant, and tonic properties. Plus, it’s safe for all species!

Cardamom smells amazing! The seeds are harvested and distilled into this wonderfully refreshing essential oil. It’s fantastic for digestive support, helping with gas, flatulence, colic, bad breath, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, and reflux. It even helps inhibit gastric ulcers. For respiratory issues, Cardamom is a hero against bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, sneezing, sniffling, coughing, and excess mucous. It’s also great for inflammation, especially for edema and muscle aches when massaged directly into sore or swollen areas. Is there anything this oil can’t do?

Emotionally, Cardamom is a game-changer. It helps with anger, frustration, blaming, and lack of clarity. It promotes objectivity, self-control, respect, tolerance, and patience. Hmmm... I can think of a few people who could benefit from this!

You can use Cardamom aromatically, topically, or internally. For dogs, diffuse it, apply 1-2 drops along the spine (dilute 1 drop in 20-30 drops of carrier oil), apply over the abdomen for digestive issues, or over the chest for respiratory concerns. You can also place a drop on the top of a front paw or a cotton bandana for a natural wearable diffuser. Cardamom is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA, so it can be given internally too. Start with 1 drop mixed with wet food, on a yummy treat, or mixed with 1 mL of water or carrier oil in a syringe or dropper.

For cats, diffuse it, apply topically over the area of concern (dilute 1 drop in 50 drops of carrier oil), or mix into wet food (1 drop diluted in 80 drops of carrier oil). You can also mix 4-5 drops with 1 cup of baking soda and sprinkle it on their litter.

For horses or large animals, use Cardamom topically over the area of concern or give it orally (2 drops per 1000 lbs twice daily). It’s excellent in chicken coops too—diffuse it in a water diffuser or spray a mist on the bedding (10 drops Cardamom per 4 oz. distilled water).

I love diffusing Cardamom alone or with Bergamot or Orange for emotional and respiratory support. It’s my absolute favorite for kitties with upper respiratory infections!

Cardamom mixes well with many oils like Ylang Ylang, Orange, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Clove, and more. This oil is truly a marvel!
