Reflecting on the impact witnessing many deaths and grieving has had on my current relationships with the animals I love. I don’t want to invoke a sense of urgency in myself or anyone else, instead just a sense of presence. I notice in myself an expectation to be productive all the time and I project that onto other animals that have no stake in the rules we’ve placed on ourselves. Noticing impermanence helps me reject grind culture and be a better pet care provider.
Had such a nice time joining for an outdoor adventure today! We belong in the woods!
Speedy and I had a lot to talk about on our morning hike today and I just wanted to share some reflections.

Rainy days are for sitting on the floor and making prolonged eye contact with moody cats. Lots to learn here. Hope everyone is staying safe in the floods. I imagine this Instagram post is not far off from sounding like a message someone may have scribbled in 1570 BC. Interesting times.
I met two gorgeous rag dolls today that look just like my cat but are much more polite! They are such magical critters. If you need me I’ll be worshipping at their paws 😭🤩😻

Today is the 54th anniversary of the stonewall uprising, happy Pride 🏳️🌈🔥 Every once in a while, I like to remind folks that this business is run by a very q***r person.
My q***rness touches every corner of my life and I like to spend this month reflecting. My particular experience of being q***r in this country has instilled in me a sense of devotion to my community, a feeling of kinship with misunderstood animals and a desire to resist imperialist values. I don’t think I can sum up the intrinsic connection between my q***r identity/experience and my work in an Instagram post and it feels pretty ironic to attempt to do so.
I will say, the same internal voice that urges me to focus on mutual aid instead of wealth-building also questions my desire to get dogs to walk at a fast pace just to look impressive. The same voice that encourages me to present as a visible q***r person even when I’m nervous in public also suggests that I focus on the health and wellness and joy of the animals in my care and take them on long hikes in the woods. The same voice that wants to defend myself and my friends from exploitation and fetishization and hate also reminds me that we as humans are not entitled to the earth or any of its inhabitants and that we don’t own the land we live on or even the animals in our homes.
This past year I’ve felt extremely supported by my community as I faced sickness, surgery and an ongoing brain injury. I’m grateful for my found family in providence, I’m so grateful for my clients and for the opportunity to actually live as myself even when I’m at work. It’s a massive and hard won privilege.
Becoming a dog trainer has been a challenging and surprisingly beautiful process for me. I learn so much about consent, boundaries, fear, power and security in my work with dogs. Every day I face the myths I’ve internalized about the animals we coexist with, the environment and my role in this ecosystem and I’m thrilled to be learning (and unlearning) so much all the time.
Thank you for inviting me into your lives and your homes and thank you for riding out the changes I make to my business as I grow and change.

Morning routine w Moggs…he often curls up at my feet and falls asleep while I get ready for the day (because waking up was soooo exhausting).
Here to say the little triumphs with your fear-reactive pet really do matter! When I picked my cat up from the groomer this past week they didn’t say “he’s quite difficult!” Progress not perfection.
If The Mogget doesn’t get a haircut he suffers all summer so I ask for a lion cut and I’m always sure to request that they don’t bathe him, don’t even turn on the faucet, don’t touch clippers or scissors to his head, no fragrance or bows or extras. I trim his nails myself before he sees his groomer so he’s less lethal and in addition to his regular Prozac dose, I add Gabapentin to his breakfast so he’s calm and sleep when they work with him. It also helps us to book a mobile groomer that comes to the door so Mog doesn’t have to howl in the car all the way there and back again.
Between appointments, he and I are working on desensitization to grooming tools. Progress is slow but all the little things I do to manage his anxiety felt so worth it when I asked the groomer how my cat did and he said “he was totally fine.”

I am slowly building my schedule back up as my brain heals and it’s been a pleasure to spend time with regulars like Sadie again, who’ve been with me since I started the biz and are truly close friends.
Today is Sweet Beast’s one year birthday! 🥳🎉🎂
I ended the first year of owning and operating this business by getting covid for the first time and then, just a few days after my quarantine ended, getting into a car accident and sustaining a concussion. It’s been it’s own sort of grand finale and after the last challenging month of a challenging (and beautiful) year I am flooded with gratitude.
Thank you to those of you who responded to my emergencies with kindness and compassion, trusted my employees as you have trusted me and took the extra step to check on me. Starting this business has been one of the scariest and bravest things I have done and all along I’ve feared that having a major emergency would mean losing everything…I had a few major emergencies and I didn’t lose everything.
Thank you for staying. Thank you for accepting my imperfections and forgiving my mistakes. Thank you for seeing me. Thank you for inviting me into your homes and your lives. Thank you for expanding my community. It’s an honor and a privilege to be your pet care provider. Happy New Year!
A dog friend of mine just welcomed two new rats into her home- hi Mocha and Munchy! Very excited abt these little critters.
Ginger is a beauty queen!! Loved having some backyard playtime with her - im stocking up on tennis balls, static line, rugs and flirt poles for play dates this winter. For a lot of high energy dogs walks are simply not enough, other forms of exercise are great for enriching both the mind and body! I’m always happy to do this and I’ll be adding play as an option on Time To Pet.

Happy “gotcha” day to my close friend Speedy! Speedy’s folks are particularly good at giving their critter the most joyful life possible and I’m so glad he found his way into their home and by extension, my life. He’s an OG Sweet Beast!
Maddox says, “fall, as in falling in love with New England all over again.” If I had a yellow leaf for every time I thought, “I love it here” on a walk with a dog this season then we’d be wading through golden piles too high and dense to be dispersed by winter wind long past first frost.

Early sunsets and orange leaves have always made me a little nervous but I love living in a place that changes. I like the feeling of anticipation around this time of year, the collective effort to buy snow tires and sprinkle salt and wrap windows in plastic. This is my seventh autumn in Providence. I never thought I’d choose cold barren winters but I feel at home here, and love it wholly 🍁🍂
