I still feel confused at times as to why there is still such a pushback to using food to train your dog.
“When will I not have to use it anymore?”
“Will I always have to have food on me?”
“Won’t he then become obsessed with all food?”
“I want him to do it because he loves me, not because I have food”
“Using food is cheating”
“Using food means you’re bribing not training”
“Using food will make my dog fat”
“I never had to use food with my last dog.”

These are all just some of the insane things I’ve heard and still hear. And it makes me crazy because I can’t imagine saying these things to my employees.
“When will I not have to pay you anymore?”
“If I pay you are you going to just become obsessed with money?”
“I really want you to work for me because you love me, not because I pay you”

Food is a tool. It is a TOOL. And just like any tool it can be used well or used poorly, but it’s one of the only tools in dog training that I hear more myths about than any other. And that’s unfortunate because when used properly it does so many good things -

Food is a primary reinforcer and for most dogs it’s the most valuable thing they can get. This makes it enormously powerful when trying to teach them how to do something new and/or complicated. That doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate a pet on the head, but they’d rather have the food and there’s NOTHING wrong with that. Just like you’d rather be paid in dollars rather than chocolate bars.

Food is fast. It’s easy to deliver, portable, and also variable in value (kibble vs cheese) so it’s very flexible also depending on your level and stage of training.

Food can help create powerful positive associations for dogs as well as counter condition negative associations they already have because of its value to them. Using food in the presence of other dogs, people and environments helps your dog have a positive association with them and this in and of itself is incredibly powerful. I think as artists a lot of us go through some HIGHS AND LOWS especially since our reach is really all dependent on social media. Over the years we have seen a major change in the way our content is viewed and how many actually see it. 5 years ago you could post a piece and almost your whole following would see your post, now you are lucky is 10% does. This is especially hard when you finish a piece you are extra proud of and no one really sees it. Usually I just try and remind myself that the pieces I am making are meant to be enjoyed by the person who bought it and they are the only people who matter when it comes to that piece.

I think most of us also have a bit of an issue with getting bored and needing to try new things. I obviously like MANY forms of art and love to dabble in a few. It is also great to be able to master one form, I just do not have the attention for that. Going from IDEA TO PRODUCT can be hard especially since everything has been done. People paint glass, make pins, paint, draw etc. There is no shortage of artists in every form of art. I think you just need to do what makes you happy sometimes and if it sells that is great and if not just know you enjoyed the process!

I am never going to stop making art that makes me happy. Not every piece is going to appeal to everyone but I know someone will see my post and it will either make them smile or maybe even encourage them to try something that might not have otherwise!

I will only select and own purebred dogs from a knowledgable and responsible breeder for my lifetime. Why? I put great importance on the health of my pets, their quality of life and longevity with in my family.
After much research and mentoring I have learned that purebred dog breeders select thier breeding stock on not only sound, healthy individuals of great character for the next generation, but they do extensive health testing on all thier families of dogs. Along with DNA genetic markers and testing for indivdual anomalies. They have developed safety nets so thier dogs won't ever end up in a shelter. Things like a contract which assures under any circumstance they will take them back. That my new family member is microchipped so as they may be identified in a moment and be reunited with their families. Breeders are and supply great resources to thier well organized club rescues, not only regionally but net working nationally.
In a nutshell a responsible breeder offer to us a family member from the healthiest canine colony known to exist in the world. How can I depend on that statement? Because they are the only families of dogs in the world who are bred on documented health tests, and compiled through reporting agencies like OFA, Cerf. And others. Breeders dedicate resources to the development and research of present and future health anomalies, identifying and using DNA genetic markers. Creating a healthier happier next generation.
I can't list everything in this FB post of why I will only acquire my dogs from a responsible purebred dog breeder. I will say my heart goes out to anyone who's family dog is taken from them to soon. I appreciate anyone who unselfishly takes in a dog from a shelter, or rescue with no knowledge of their health, or temperament. I have watched too many friends and family dedicate great time and resources in these dogs, only for the out come to end sadly after much dedication on their and others part. I am selfish,I admit it. I only want the best for my family. That's why I recommend you too do your research. Not all breeders are created equal. And I must say in closing buyer beware rather your buying from a shelter or a breeder. None are created equal.

Meet Riley!
Riley is a 4 year old female, one of our many former puppymill mommas.
She's a very sweet girl who is in need of a patient home where she can continue to come out of her shell.
She's nervous of loud noises and still learning how to be a pet, but has come so far.
Riley is somewhat dog selective and not a huge fan of other female dogs, but does very well with male dogs. She would do best with a male dog (or two!) in the home.
She is a Berner oddity in that she is not incredibly food motivated, but very breed standard in that she is motivated by attention and love.
She loves playing outside and would love a big enough yard to run around and explore. She is house trained and leash trained. She loves to be a watchdog and look outside the window. Riley is also a huge talker! She will tell you when she’s hungry or wants to go outside and howls to let you know.
Riley has not spent time around cats, but we think she'd do just fine with them.
Riley loves the dog park as well!
A perfect home for Riley would be an individual or couple who enjoy spending time in the back yard with her. She would love to be your companion for gardening, relaxed barbeques, or even just a beer by the fire pit.

Riley is being fostered in Lansing, MI.

BARLI UPDATE:

Barli landed at the shelter I work at after a local puppy mill was caught with more dogs than they were licensed to have. Barli was adopted but unfortunately got returned, it just wasn’t the right fit.

I reached out to Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog rescue (HMBMD) who are amazing! They found a local foster and Barli went home with them today ❤️ he will need a lot of time to decompress and learn to trust people, unfortunately is terrified of humans and understandably untrusting. Flinches at every noise and hand movement 💔 he will not be available for adoption for a long time, he is safe and comfortable in his new foster home.

This is the reality of puppy mills. 80% of the Berners in the care of HMBMD are from puppy mills located here in Ohio. 80%!! They took in 10 purebred Bernese just last week and are projected to have TRIPLE the normal intake this year. Puppy mills ramped up during COVID, so many people wanted a cute puppy to help cope. Now those homes are full and all these unwanted dogs are the ones that suffer.

HMBMD needs help to rescue and care for many other “Barli”’s! SO:

“HOW CAN I HELP?”

Foster! If you’re local (Midwest, particularly Ohio), fill out a foster application on their website. Many of these dogs are terrified and have a huge flight risk, so a fenced yard is required ❤️

Adopt! Tons of Berners are going to need homes. Just be patient on getting the right dog matched to your home.

Transport! Help get these dogs out of shelters and to foster homes or the vet for treatments. Just driving an hour or two can get Berners much closer to help.

Donate! The bills for these babies are astronomical

UPDATE: Hawkeye has been adopted.

Hawkeye is one big beautiful boy!
He's 2 yrs old, approx 90lbs but could put on a few pounds, energetic, neutered and housebroken!
This boy has a huge play drive and is rarely found on the couch enjoying a nap.
He is dog friendly but would need a canine friend that plays as hard as he does. Confidence and determination oozes out of handsome Hawkeye and he's perfectly good being the only dog as well!
He hasn't had a very social upbringing so his manners could use some improving when it comes to other dogs.
Hawkeye is friendly with kids but is an active, clumsy Berner and would likely knock over smaller children, so we're asking for older kids only.
Hawkeye has some leash manners but there is room for improvement.

He gallops like a horse in the yard and loves playing hide-n-go seek with his people. He is goofy, with a tail that wags all the time with happiness (usually bringing a toy in his mouth), and he carries his leash just to show off.
He's very smart, strong, and ready for adventure!

Hawkeye is currently being fostered near Indianapolis, IN. You must be willing to travel there to meet/adopt him.

This week we moved into our new home and welcomed a new family member, Fefe! She is a hospice case that came into the humane society I work at, I couldn’t resist her sweet demeanor. She is not afraid of anything in spite of her 4 pound frame.

We are doing some minor home repairs and then I can officially start my Bernese rescue! Who’s ready? 😍

A few days I started fostering for Heart of Michigan Bernese rescue, since it’ll be a little while before I can financially back my own.

Meet my sweet girls, Corinna and Nikki ❤️ both mamas pulled from a puppy mill. The girls got spayed yesterday and finally ate some food for me. They are learning that the world is not so scary ❤️

The Versatility Award was created to recognize those Bernese Mountain Dogs who show great breadth of achievement. One of the primary goals of this award is to encourage all Bernese breeders and owners to preserve the Berner as an "all around" dog with a long tradition as a multi-use farm dog as well as a beautiful show dog.

5 Beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog puppies. 1 female and 5 males. Born on the 6th of August, They are the most affectionate little pups you could get. They have brought so much happiness to us over the last 10 weeks you wouldn't believe. We will be sad to see them go but whoever gets one of these they will light up their lives. A fantastic family pet and they are super with kids. If you are interested and saw these in person you definitely would be going home with an extra passenger. This is the ideal time for them to go to their forever home between 8 and 12 weeks. Fully vaccinated, microchipped and wormed. IKC.
