Today we had to say goodbye to this wee one... He was too full of infection from the antbites he received prior to bring brought to shelter.
Pls remember if you stumble on KITTENS and they're alone, chances are mom is nearby. If you are worried, check them out... If mom is near they'll be bug free, clean, and if you wipe their bottoms with a cloth or tissue you'll see their urine is clear or light in odor and color... If mom hasn't been around it'll be dark or smell strong and or bugs will be discovering the babies... That's when you intervene. Pls contact the shelter or myself right away and get them to one of us quickly, where they can be treated and handled as they need to be.
Kittens are VERY fragile and require a special kind of care; pls keep them warm until you deliver them to one of us. A cold kitten is hard to recover.... To keep a kitten warm you can pour rice into a pillow case or sock, warm it for one minute, wrap in a blanket or towel and place little kittens on it. Up to three week new kittens cannot hold their own body heat and given cats are a normal body temp of 101/102, even holding. Kitten up to our bodies isn't heat enough when they're brand new. They need mom's body or a radiating heat source, BUT they also need to be able to get away from that heat if they get too hot... So, place them in a box where only half is with a heat source and the other half plain towel... Kittens have the instinct and drive to go toward heat when cold, off heat when too warm. And they're FULLY capable of doing so on their own if given opportunity.
You're welcome to call or text me or call the shelter any time kittens are found and if you're determined to try, pls DONT give them cow's milk.... Ever. If you MUST, lactaid free milk is an okay supplement UNTIL kitten formula can be acquired... That being said, even this can cause severe digestive issues... So, pls do so with care, adding an egg yolk for every 4 oz (no white) and 1/2 spoonful of UNSWEETENED plain yogurt for every 4 oz. Warm until it's COMFORTABLE, Not cold and not hot. And NO MATTER WHAT, DO NOT EVER EVER EVER FEED A COLD KITTEN.... Warm them first. Feeding a cold kitten can kill them.
Thanks for your support, care, concern and interest, guys!
