A fully grown adult Aussie thrives on around 1.5 to 2.5 cups of high-quality dog food split into two separate meals every single day. It is a good idea to find specialized food for the dogโ€™s appropriate age (puppies, adults, or seniors). Because of its tendency to gain weight, you should carefully monitor the dogโ€™s calorie consumption and give treats only sporadically to support its training. Considering their propensity for allergies and sensitivities, Australian Shepherds may do better eating a limited ingredient or allergy care dog food.
We think the best dog food for Australian Shepherds is Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet | Adult Grain-Free Dry Dog Food. We also made a list of all the best foods for your Australian Shepherd here.
This dog food is a best-seller for a reason. There is no soy, corn, or wheat, and no peas, lentils, or other legumes used for a filler that can irritate allergy-prone dogs like Australian Shepherds. And since this breed can suffer from Epilepsy, the thiamine, manganese, and copper content protects Australian Shepherdsโ€™ nervous systems. Thereโ€™s taurine and Vitamin A to prevent eye problems, too.

The Australian Shepherd is a loyal companion and excellent playmate, but the first introductions with your children should be carefully thought out and managed. Because of its herding instinct, the Australian Shepherd may at first have a tendency to chase or nip new people it encounters. Once the dog grows accustomed to your children, though, then they will get along very well with each other. In fact, this breed may become quite protective of your children. But you should teach your children never to tug at the dogโ€™s fur or disturb it while itโ€™s trying to eat. The Australian Shepherd can tolerate rough play, but it doesnโ€™t want to be annoyed or harassed. It is also never a good idea to leave the dog alone with young children in case interactions go poorly.

The Australian Shepherd has a medium-sized build, medium to long hair, and a straight back. The most common colors are solid black, solid red, blue merle, and red merle with various combinations of white and copper markings all along the body. Another appealing characteristic is the piercing brown or blue eyes, which once gave this breed the nickname of โ€œghost-eye dog.โ€ It is not uncommon for this breed to have two different-colored eyes. Most dogs have a full tail, while a few have a bobbed or partially bobbed tail.

Because the Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized dog that sheds all year round and needs a lot of exercises, it is a common misconception that you need a big house with a huge backyard to own this dog.
Contrary to the common belief, these dogs can adapt to any type of environment just as long as they are provided with the physical and mental stimulation that they need. This dog loves staying outdoors, but it would be wrong to consider it a yard dog.
When it is not playtime for this dog, it is important that you keep it indoors and provide it with constant human interaction. If an Australian Shepherd is left alone for a long period of time, it might demonstrate destructive behavior such as chewing furniture or leaving scratch marks everywhere.
If you are considering keeping this dog in an apartment, it is important to keep in mind the restrictions that come with it. An apartment setting is not the ideal environment for a dog that is as active as the Australian Shepherd.
However, you might be able to compensate for the small living space with the right amount of training, physical activity, mental stimulation, and outdoor time.
It is also important to note here that pet owners with a very busy schedule should not consider getting an Australian Shepherd as their pet dog. This is because although this dog simply loves its playtime, it also needs human interaction.
Without a constant show of affection and love from its owner, this dog might develop a condition that is most commonly known as separation anxiety. In addition to this, this dog also needs its owner to take time out and help it socialize with other human beings, adults, and children alike, as well as other pets, including other dogs

The Australian Shepherd is known for being a very energetic and loving companion. They are very loyal to their owners and their families, especially children. You can trust this breed to bend over backward for the protection of its owners.
When it comes to children, they can sometimes chase and nip and tuck them for their herding. This is because this breed is of a herding nature and assumes that children are a part of their โ€œflock.โ€ However, with the right training, this habit can be tamed, and they can prove to be very devoted and caring in the presence of children.
It is important to provide the Australian Shepherd with appropriate socialization, preferably when they are still puppies. This helps them adapt to different people, pets, noises, and surroundings. They can be shy and timid when meeting strangers, but with the right training, they can learn to be very sociable.

Though these traditional ranching dogs have adapted to living situations for today's modern owner, they do require access to a decent amount of outdoor space to be properly exercised. You don't have to own an acreage to keep an Aussie happyโ€”though that might be an ideal set-up for this active breed! A house with a large, fenced-in yard will suffice. Because of their activity needs, Aussies aren't the best match for apartment living unless you're able to get outside for a stimulating walk, hike, or game of Frisbee at the dog park for at least 40 minutes every day.
"When you have an Australian shepherd, it's going to be very active, very smart, and tough," says Kilcommons. "It has a high need for exercise and mental stimulation. You need to be willing to go to obedience competitions or agility or fly ball or something that is going to engage the dog both mentally and physically."
Eager to please, Aussies are quick to learn and enjoy regular training sessions. They respond well to positive-reinforcement training methods, and many Aussies go on to thrive in agility training once they master obedience basics. While the average owner probably won't be taking this dog to herd livestock out on the farm, many professionally-trained Aussies work as search-and-rescue, narcotic detection, and guide dog roles.
As an affectionately nicknamed "Velcro dog," Aussies prefer being with their people for most of the day, and may not be the best fit for someone who works long hours due to potential separation anxiety. Aussies are a great match for active owners who plan to spend quality time with their dog, whether that means a multi-day outdoor adventure or simply riding along on an errand run. It's important to consider your lifestyle before committing to any dog, but it may help to speak with an Australian shepherd breeder or rescue group about expectations to see if an Australian shepherd puppy or dog would be a good fit for you.

The Australian shepherd is considered an overall healthy breed with a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, though certain issues like elbow and hip dysplasia and hereditary eye problems can occur. The United States Australian Shepherd Association recommends breeders test for cataracts, autoimmune thyroiditis, drug sensitivities, and collie eye anomaly (CEA) to avoid passing on to their litters. Experts who study genetic conditions in Aussies recommend dogs with close relatives who have had hereditary cancerโ€”such as lymphomaโ€”do not mate with other dogs with a history of the same cancer. Of course, not all Aussies will encounter serious health issues, but it's important to be aware of these concerns when considering this breed.
While rare, Aussies with double merle characteristics (meaning they have a predominantly white coat) may be more prone to hearing and sight impairments. Despite this, these Aussies can still live long, healthy lives with proper care. Before you pick a puppy from a litter, be sure to ask your reputable breeder about potential genetic issues, and request any family and pedigree history so you can identify any red flags on hereditary issues. Or if you're adopting your Aussie, be sure to ask the rescue organization for any available health history.

In a funny twist of fate, the Australian shepherd's origin may not really involve much of Australia at all. In fact, the American Kennel Club says the Aussies we know today are actually descendants of herding dogs from Basque sheepherders from the Pyrenees mountains of Europe who immigrated to America for work in the mid-19th century. These shepherds brought their "little blue dogs" with them to work the land in Western states like Wyoming and Colorado, where ranchers fell in love with the sturdy hard-working breed. While a few Basque sheepherders (and their dogs) may have come to the American West through Australia, some historians have noted that the naming of the breed "Australian" is a quite a stretch, since the dogs are not registered in Australia as a native breed and there is no substantial history of the dogs outside the Basque sheepherders who came to work in the American West.
Once they'd arrived in the U.S., Australian shepherds quickly became a staple of cowboy culture in the American West, becoming Hollywood regulars with notable appearances in classic Westerns like Run, Appaloosa, Run and the more modern Disney film Stub: The Greatest Cowdog in the West. They've taken center-stage in the rodeo culture, too. Check out this video of famed animal trainer and rodeo performer Jay Sisler and his incredible pups Shorty, Stubby, and Queenie. Today, many Aussies still work on ranches and farms, happily herding cattle and protecting sheep.

-In the '70s, when Frisbee culture was at its peak, competitive Frisbee catching was a popular sport. Australian shepherd Hyper Hank and his owner Eldon McIntire performed their trophy-winning frisbee routine during the Super Bowl XII pre-show, and were later invited to the White House to meet President Carter. The video above features Hyper Hank in competition against champion Frisbee catcher Ashley Whippet. You can see Hank around the 1:20 mark!
-Australian shepherds are synonymous with cowboy culture, often appearing in rodeos, Western films, and TV shows, which helped boost the breed's popularity.
-Australian shepherds aren't actually from Australia. The breed originated in the mountains of Europe.
-Originally bred as hard-working herders, today's Aussies are often used as police dogs to sniff out narcotics or aid in search-and-rescue missions, and as service dogs that help individuals with a disability.
-It's very common for Aussies to have two different colored, or even marbled, eyes.

Australian Shepherd Diet & Meal Plan Advice
Known as highly intelligent, playful, trainable, and affectionate, the Australian Shepherd is a breed known for its spotted coats and multiple-colored eyes.
Australian Shepherds, or Aussies as theyโ€™re known, have a lot of energy and need regular vigorous exercise, and are best suited for households with large yards.
For long, healthy life, your Aussie needs a combination of regular exercise, proper nutrition, and routine visits to the vet.
Australian Shepherds are herding dogs, meaning they will try to get you and anyone in your household to follow its directions. They are bred to handle large animals like cows and sheep, so a little herding behavior with your loved ones shouldnโ€™t come as a surprise.
To give your Aussie the best life possible, you should provide the best food you can at feeding time. However, understand not every meal plan is made the same, so if youโ€™re curious about what to feed your Australian Shepherd for optimal health, keep reading.

The Importance Of Getting Enough Exercise
For Aussies, getting enough exercise is crucial to their physical and mental health.
The recommended amount of exercise for a healthy adult Australian Shepherd is at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise every day.
There are numerous benefits of exercise for your Australian Shepherd. In addition to making them healthier, regular exercise will also allow you time to reinforce proper behaviors and enhance the bond you both share.
Some additional benefits include:
Aid Digestion: Regular exercise will help keep your dogโ€™s waste production regular as well. Also, a daily routine will maintain a proper body width and simultaneously improve your dogโ€™s appetite.
Correct Negative Behaviors: Itโ€™s understood that dogs lash out and misbehave at times, and the causes are often associated with not enough exercise. Symptoms include agitation, stress, and uncomfortableness.
Improved Mental Function: Australian Shepherdโ€™s that develop anxiety issues show very little ability to focus, and negative behaviors become dominant. Regular activity will alleviate anxiety, calm their mind, and make them more receptive to instructions.
Improved Respiratory and Cardiovascular Function: Vigorous exercise taxes the lungs and cardiovascular systems of Australian Shepherd so that regular exercises will improve their heart and lung health.
Increased Flexibility: As dogs age, joints and muscles become tighter. Regular exercise and movement are crucial in maintaining joint health and flexibility.
Maintain The Skeletal-Muscle System: Daily exercise builds and strengthens your Aussieโ€™s skeletal-muscle system, which is crucial for overall health and wellness. Strong muscles force the cardiovascular system to work long after the exercise is over, adding to the benefit of vigorous exercise.

The Type Of Nutrition Your Australian Shepherd Needs
Dogs like to sniff and explore their surroundings. Itโ€™s instinctual and serves to discover new food sources and or potential threats in the area. Daily walks allow your Australian Shepherd to engage their curiosity as well as explore their surroundings.
This discovery also has one added benefit. Dogs rely on the sense of smell, and in fact, they smell 40x better than a human, and from scents, dogs can also learn about what other animals ate, what time they ate, and other factors of the other animalsโ€™ day.
We have a few suggestions of the types of exercises you may have your Aussie do.
Walks: The easiest form of exercise is to take daily walks. The benefits of these include allowing your Australian Shepherd to get some exercise while discovering their immediate surroundings. Walks are also a great way to reinforce good behaviors and strengthen the bonds between you two.
Hikes: Hikes can be a great alternative to daily walks. Going somewhere new and different will expose your pet to new sights and sounds to engage their curiosity. Keep in mind the type of terrain and temperature before you head on a hike and pack plenty of water for both of you.
Dog Park: Dog parks are a great suggestion and have multiple benefits. Allowing your Aussie to be off-leash will enable it to discover its space and boundaries while also getting exercise running around. Additionally, they will learn social skills with other dogs, as dogs are social by nature. Donโ€™t worry if they pack with other dogs, run, and look like they are wrestling with each other. Itโ€™s part of how dogs interact with each other.
Agility Drills: Australian Shepherds are amazingly athletic. Creating obstacles and agility drills is a great way to get exercise, work on behavior, and training drills as well. These types of activities will engage your Aussieโ€™s curiosity, get them the vigorous exercise they need, and reinforce the hierarchy and roles between pet and pet parent.
Swimming: Most Aussies enjoy all types of physical activity, and that includes swimming. Of course, this is a generalization, and individual dog preferences may be different. Swimming is a full-body activity and is an excellent option for low-impact exercise, especially for older animals.

ash at all times. While your puppy is still very small you can take him on walks through the yard, but once he grows you can go to the park or walk the trails and sidewalks near your home.
Step 6
Keep your Australian shepherd puppy's water dish full at all times and refresh the water at lease once a day. Feed your puppy a high-quality dry puppy food, following the instructions on the bag to determine the proper amount.
Step 7
Give your puppy plenty of toys to play with so he does not chew on other objects in the house. If you find your puppy chewing on something he shouldn't be, take the object away, saying "no" as you do. Give your puppy one of his toys, then, so he learns what he can and cannot play with.
Step 8
Keep your puppy in his crate at night and provide him with a bowl of water. Make sure the bottom of the crate is padded, or put a small dog bed inside. Take your puppy outside in the morning immediately after letting him out of his crate.
Step 9
Enroll yourself and your Australian shepherd in obedience classes once the dog reaches four months of age. These classes will help you learn to control your Aussie's energy and herding tendencies while also teaching your puppy some basic obedience.
Step 10
Brush your puppy on a daily basis using a small slicker brush or wire-pin brush. This will help to cut down on shedding and will keep your shepherd's coat healthy and soft.
Care Tips for Adult Australian Shepherds.
Step 1
Walk your Australian shepherd for at least 30 minutes a day. Australian shepherds are very active and, without the proper amount of daily exercise, their energy could become difficult to control.
Step 2
Brush your dog's coat once a day using a wire-pin brush or medium-bristle brush. This will help to control the shedding of dead and loose hair. Daily brushing will also prevent mats; but if this is too much for you, weekly brushing may be sufficient.
Step 3
Bathe your Australian shepherd when necessary. Always use lukewarm water and shampoo formulated for use on dogs. Do not bathe your dog too often because it could dry out or irritate his skin.
Step 4
Trim the fur on the bottom of your shepherd's feet once every six to eight weeks. Use a pair of straight shears to cut the fur even with the pads. This will help to prevent matting between the toes.
Step 5
Provide your Australian shepherd fresh water daily and feed him a high-quality dry adult dog food. The amount of food your dog needs will depend on his size. Simply follow the suggestions on the package or ask your veterinarian for recommendations.
Step 6
Take your dog to the veterinarian for regular check-ups. Your vet will inform you what vaccinations your Australian shepherd needs and will keep an eye on your dog's ears, teeth and eyes.
Step 7
Clean your Australian shepherd's ears at home as often as recommended by your veterinarian. Sq**rt a dog ear cleanser into the dog's ear canal, then massage his ear to spread it. Wipe the dog's ear clean using cotton balls.
Step 8
Play with your dog as often as possible and allow him plenty of time to run around outside. This will give your Australian shepherd time to work off excess energy and it will keep him fit

According to the Australian Shepherd Club of America, the Aussieโ€™s background as a working dog is evident in their physique. Australian shepherds are medium-sized, deep-chested, and slightly longer than they are tall, with relatively straight front legs, a combination which helps them maintain both agility and endurance. Depending on s*x, they range in size from 18 to 23 inches tall and 40 to 65 pounds. Their coats are medium length, somewhat coarse, and weather resistant, which helps them work in any weather condition, and they come in blue merle, red merle, black, and red varieties, all of which commonly have tan and white spotting.
Aussies also have bright, alert eyes, which give away their high level of intelligence (the intense gaze is used by working dogs to communicate with their hoofed herds and flocks). While they most often have brown eyes, itโ€™s not uncommon for Aussies, especially merle varieties, to have blue or even heterochromatic (one blue and one brown) eyes. And one surprising feature: 20% of Aussies have naturally bobbed tails.
