🌵🌵Arizona in the winter time is team roper heaven! We can find a jackpot a stone throw away any day of the week.
Halfway through the season, we might notice our equine friends' competitive edge getting a little dull, despite being legged up more than they have all year.

We may find ourselves putting more bit in our heel horse to get them stopping like they were at the beginning of the season... or letting our head horse leave with the steer because they aren't starting as hard, and we keep getting outran... maybe even having to run a little more spur out of the corner because they just aren't pulling like they usually do.
We ask them to do the same motions over and over, we might think, "How are they possibly getting worse at it?!"
It's for that exact reason, their skeletal structure is taking the same hit, the same pull run after run, day after day.

Let's do better for them so they can do better for us.

Still on the fence and think it's too expensive? How expensive are those legs you keep slipping because your horse is popping out of his stops? How expensive are the runs you are paying for just to run a steer halfway down the arena because your horse isn't starting for you?

I’ve been trying to tell you that I am in pain, but you don’t seem to listen.

I show you that I’m in pain by not being willing to work but you just call me 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 or 𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐲. Instead of helping me, you just 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫.

I show you that I’m in pain by rearing when you try to ride me, but you enjoy showing people you can sit to a rear. Instead of getting off and listening, you just say “𝐇𝐞’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬, 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐭!”

I show you that I’m in pain by throwing my head in the air, but you just say it’s one of 𝐦𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬. Instead of helping me, you just buy 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 so that I can no longer 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫.

I show you that I’m in pain by bolting, but you just get scared and decide I’m not the one for you. You sell me and I still remain as 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

It’s our responsibility as animal owners to do right by them, horses can’t speak, they communicate through their actions. So we need to listen!

9/10 times “negative behaviour” is caused my pain, the rest is learnt behaviour. Either way I always check for pain first.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, deserves the world. The amount of tolerance, loyalty, patience and trust the hurting horse has, is something I can only dream of having.

The poll and neck have many moving parts that allow our horses head and neck to flex and rotate but do you know which part allows for which movement?

💠 Occipital Bone
The main bone of the occiput, it provides protection to the back of the skull as well as an area for muscle attachment.

💠 Atlas or C1
This is one of the shorter bones in the cervical vertebrae with large wings. It meets at the occipital bone, allowing the horse to nod his head. The connection between the occipital bone and atlas is called the atlanto-occipital joint.

💠 Axis or C2
The axis is one of the largest cervical bones. It follows right behind the atlas, creating the atlanto-axial joint which allows for lateral flexion along with minimal flexion and extension movement.

💠 C3 - C7
The remaining cervical vertebrae mainly allow for flexion, extension and lateral bending. C3 - C5 are there most of the movement occurs.
