Are you looking for a clean up crew? If so check these out!!

Isopods are an marine invertebrates (animals without backbones) that belong to the greater crustacean group of animals, which includes crabs and shrimp! These soft-bodied bugs play a vital role in various ecosystems by feeding on decaying organic matter in gardens. However Isopods are strongly intertwined with the reptile hobby for other reasons as well. The variety of sizes and high calcium content make isopods a reliable source of feeders for micro species of gecko, frogs, and their offspring. The dwarf species Trichorhina tomentosa, in particular, is popular for this purpose. Many keepers also find isopods to be a great source of enrichment and offer them to their larger reptiles to stimulate natural hunting and digging behaviors. Larger species such as P. laevis and P. dilatatus are favorites among keepers!

Isopods are low-maintenance creatures and are generally happy in a very humid environment with plenty of (chemical-free) dead wood and decaying leaves to munch. In a culture tank, you can supplement this diet by offering them additional plant-based foods on a weekly basis. This includes leaf litter, quality fish flakes, or raw vegetable and fruit pieces, including carrot, apple, zucchini, or potato. These types of nutrient-rich foods benefit isopods by providing them with much-needed calcium, vitamins, and minerals. When feeding your isopods supplementary foods, only provide what your colony can manage to consume within 48 hours. Once their food is gone, wait for 1 to 2 days before giving them more.

New year new arrivals!

Lobster Roaches(Naupheta cinerea)

Lobster Roaches are originally native to northeastern Africa, but where accidentally introduced into the U.S. and many other places around the world. Lobster Roaches are a medium sized, winged species that may be the easiest species to work with and breed. Lobster Cockroaches have a relatively soft exoskeleton, and are hearty insects and do not really require any special handling. They measure around 1¼" in length as adults and are around 3/16” in length when born. Adults have wings but are unable to fly but some adults can "flutter" for short distances but we’ve never witnessed it. This is a climbing species so they are able to climb anything including smooth surfaces like plastic and glass. Like all roaches lobsters will eat just about anything they are offered. Highly nutritious items such as various fruits, vegetables, grains etc. are all accepted. Unlike other roach species lobsters don’t require a high protein diet but always remember variety is key!!

01/02/2022

The Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) are native to the large island of Madagascar off the East coast of Southern Africa, is one of the world's largest cockroach species. In the native habitat, these wood dwellers are commonly found living in fallen and decaying trees or in dry leaf litter.

Madagascar hissing cockroaches, are a dark reddish-brown to black in color, with a hard exoskeleton. Unlike most cockroaches, they have no wings for flight or jumping. They compensate by being determined excellent climbers who can even scale glass walls. They are only one of the roughly 20 species of cockroach on Madagascar, many of which are kept as exotic pets.

Some U.S. states, including Florida, require individuals or institutions who want to keep hissers to have a special permit, whether for captive breeding colonies or even one lone hisser. Permits specify and advise keepers not to ever take the females, especially pregnant females, out of their habitats. This is required to prevent the inadvertent introduction of an invasive species into U.S. environments.

Where does the hissing come from?

Hissing cockroaches have a pair of modified spiracles; these are the tubes insects use for breathing. These insects use these spiracles to produce the hissing sound that inspired their name. They will hiss when disturbed, and males also hiss when courting females. They force air through the spiracles to produce all of their various hissing sounds; one call is used to attract a mate, another is used when the cockroach is feeling threatened (known as the "disturbance" hiss).

Leopard Geckos

Leopard geckos are native to desert area’s in Afghanistan, Iran,Pakistan and parts of India. They are nocturnal lizards and have been in the pet trade since 1970’s. Leopard geckos are strictly insects eater which means no greens are required. Leopard geckos should be offered two sized insects for every inch of their total length every other day. Be careful not to offer large foods to prevent choking.
Baby leopard geckos should be fed 6-7 small crickets or mealworms every day until they reach 4 inches . Large foods should be offered every other day until they become full grown in about 12 months. Adults can be fed 8-9 large crickets or mealworms 2-3 times a week. When using supplements such as waxworms,or Calciwroms , the gecko should be fed 3-5 worms 3 times a weeks due to their fat content. Calciworms are used for adding the required calcium to a diet.

Staple Diet
Cricket’s,Mealworms’s, Hornworms and Superworms

Supplements
WaxWorms (To add fat)
Calciworms (To add calcium naturally)

Flightless Fruit Flies
(Drosophila Melanogaster & Hydei)

Flightless fruit flies are an easy cultured prey item for reptiles and amphibians that are in need of smaller foods. Drosophila Melanogaster is a smaller, faster reproducing species, taking about 2 weeks to complete its life cycle. Drosophila hydei is a larger species which takes longer to mature, taking about 21 days to complete its life cycle. These larger flies are about 1/8” long and are perfect for mantids, anoles, salamanders, spiders, dart frogs, and even bettas These fruit flies have wings but have been bred so that they are curled and they're flightless (not wingless)! When you purchase a culture from us they should keep them between 65 -80 degrees and out of direct sunlight. All cultures will be well started!

Coming Soon !!

Rice flour beetles
(Tribolium Confusion)

Rice flour Beetles are a 1/8” arthropod that are a convenient food source for for poisonous dart frogs, bumble bee toads, fish , and other small animals that enjoy smaller foods. Our cultures consists of around 150 breeding adults and flour media. Rice flour beetles are very easy to maintain and can go 6 months without any upkeep, making them an ideal “special treat” or “backup feeder” if you run out of other feeder insects. The adult rice flour beetles are capable of emitting an unpleasant tasting chemical when threatened. Their larvae (2nd Photo) however are very nutritious and most dart frogs, bumble bee toads, fish , and other small animals will eat the rice flour beetles larvae.. The period of time for an egg to a beetles takes up to 6 weeks at optimal temperatures. We suggest keeping them between 75 and 80 degrees during the day, and they will continue to reproduce for you! No feedings/ water source is necessary!

(Cultures should be able to seal well but not be airtight)

14/11/2021

The hornworm life cycle has four stages: egg, larva or caterpillar, pupa, and the hawk moth. The Hornworms hatch, begin to feed, and are full-grown in about two to three weeks. When the hornworms reach a length of two inches we drop them into soil to begin the pupation stage. Once the moths emerge we place them into a screen cage with a humbingbird feeder so they can drink nectar for weeks after they have pupated. Days after the moth have emerged the female hawk moth will lay around 250 to 350 eggs but can produce nearly 1400 eggs under favorable condition. The female moth lay single greenish-yellow eggs on the underside of branches, trunks, leaves or bark of trees. The eggs will hatch Eggs hatch in about 4 to 10 days in the summer and three or more weeks in the winter. After hatching, the larvae seek out a food source and the process starts back over.

Got Mealworms?

We do! Mealworms are the larval form of the mealworm beetle( Tenebrio Molitor). Mealworms go through four stages of life. First, it’s laid as a tiny white egg and then develops into the larva stage. Next comes the pupa, a state of sleep that can last weeks as it starts to look like an adult beetle. The entire cycle of beetles can last between one and two years🤯!
