We are taking a well deserved break for half term (hopefully the sun will be shining ☀️) We return to work on Monday 2nd June.

Shedding season ☀️

Well we are in full swing of the shedding season and we could have definitely made a few other pups from all the hair that comes off. Dee ends up in her own dog hair snow globe 🤣

Older or sick dogs 🐕

The last few weeks have been tough. As our dogs become older sometimes the grooming process can become a little bit too much for them. We all hope that our dogs will stay with us forever and these thoughts arnt something we want to think about but we do. Were your dogs biggest advocates 💪

🐶Does your dog still need to be groomed now he’s old? Yes and no
🐶 Can we make them comfortable? Yes
🐶 Will it look perfect? Probably not
🐶What can you offer? Some dogs need the process to be quick and easy. We can bath them the day before and groom them the next day or you can bath them at home the night before and bring them in for their groom.
🐶What if my dog needs grooming but can’t handle an any part of the groom? In this instance it’s humanity over vanity. The chances are your dog is now a lot older, less tolerant, abit unsteady on their feet and couldn’t care what they look like. When we are at this stage unfortunately grooming should be ceased. It’s a difficult conversation but we don’t just leave you. We have done lots of home visits for people to clean dogs eyes so they can see, make them comfortable and shown owners how to manage at home.

These last few weeks we have had to have some difficult conversations with owners about their dogs not being able to cope with being groomed. This isn’t because they hate the grooming it’s because it’s too much for them. Your dogs health and happiness is our top priority and always will be. If your dog can’t handle standing for the groom that’s fine lots of breaks can be given but it does become quite a struggle for your dog and this is the first indication your dog is slowing down. We will always have a conversation with you as always about your dogs health

If we do need to speak to you please don’t take it personally we are doing this for your dog, like always we will be honest and will continue to help if you need us to. It breaks our hearts to have to do it 🥰

🐍 Adders 🐍

With the glorious weather recently, we have seen an expected increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒 .... its that time of year when the horrible little critters appear more and they are rife at the minute!! Please check your dog before your appointment.

We will not accept any dog with fleas in the salon. If a dog comes into the salon with fleas, it will be sent home straight away, you will incur a £30 charge for the fumigation of our salon and you may not get another appointment until your next groom schedule date, so please check your dog regularly and make sure they're up to date with their tick and flea preventative.

We always recommend getting this from your vets, not off the shelf. Your dog should be weighed and given the correct dose. Remember if you have cats these need to be done at the same time. Flea treatments need to be given every 8-12 weeks depending on the product.

We have seen an increase in dogs that are being treated with spot ons presented with fleas. This is because they have reduced the active ingredient that actually kills the flea. Many fleas have become immune to this treatment.

Should we have any dog presented with fleas we have to close shop, fumigate and clean the whole shop. This results in appointments having to be moved causing an inconvenience to the owner and ourself trying to rearrange everyone on an already fully booked diary.

Did you know that only 5% of fleas are actually on the dog, the other 95% are in your home environment or car- scary i know!

Ticks can carry Lyme disease - it can leave dogs with flu like symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, reduced energy and lameness. Symptoms can progress to kidney failure which can be fatal.

We have been removing a lot of ticks off dogs recently, please check your dog regularly and only ever use a tick twister, not tweezers, ensuring you remove the head too as if the head stays in the dog, it can cause an infection.
