That Magnificent Goth Chicken though, I mean Goth is in it's name. I cannot resist. LOL! What kind of "chickens" do you have?

Winter is coming. Great, Canadian, cold winter - ack! Here are some helpful tips on how to winterize your coop and keep your chickens happy and healthy.

- Use the deep litter method - means less cleaning during cold months and adds insulating factor. If you have access to h**p, it's amazing.
- Wrap the coop in plastic/tarp - I use clear plastic so the sun can still get in. The crew loves to bathe in the warm sun during winter too.
- I use hay/straw after wrapping it in clear plastic as an added insulation, but I also reuse this hay in the spring as raised garden beds so it does double duty here.
- Reduce drafts but make sure you still have ventilation so as to not cause a humidity trap. Humidity is a chicken's worst enemy.
- If you have electricity to your coop, use a water heater. I use one that is submersible and used for horses/cattle. I've had it for years and love it.
- Make sure your roosts are wider so the chickens can wrap their feet around them widely. This way when they roost their feathers will cover their toes and prevent frost bite from taking them.
- I personally do not use heat lamps. The risk of fire is too great for me to chance it.
- I like to add herbs to the coop to not only smell nicer but to deter those pesky mites. Many people say to not use DE (diatomaceous earth). It can cause respiratory issues as the dust is so fine. I have a nice garden with catnip growing up the w***o. So in the warmer months I chop it up fresh and throw it in the coop daily. In the winter I've collected loads and dried it and throw it in there too.
- If you let them out to free range, if your ladies are anything like mine, they look at the icy, snowy ground and say, "nuhuh, not gonna happen". I've found that if I put sand or hay on the ground outside and make a little walking path for them, they will use it, but not for long periods. They like their warm, cozy home and tend to stay inside most of the time. Still, the option is there for them.

These beauties, collected this week from my hens: Silkies, Legbar, Olive Egger, Ayam Cemani and/or Turken. I can almost tell which hen laid what egg. Almost. The only tricky ones are the AC and Turken as both girls lay eggs that look the same. Fertility has been confirmed with a batch of chicks due to hatch within 2 weeks. This photo is of the freshest eggs currently available for your broodies or incubators. Roosters are Ayam Cemani and Silkie, so chicks may be pures of these breeds or blends as they are all snuggled up in one coop for the winter. Twenty five coconuts for these, first of the season. Price will go up considerably in the spring once they are in their respective coops again. Located: Val des Monts, Qc

Check out this handsome dude. His name is Red. He's our red-pyle Silkie rooster. Last year we thought we hatched a pretty red-pyle pullet, but alas it is his and Snow's (our white Silkie) son. Snow lays a lightly tinted green/blue egg. The cockerel hatched from that colour of egg and therefore could produce offspring that lay similar coloured eggs. If you're looking for a cockerel who looks like his dad here drop me a line. I'll snap some pics of him soon and update. They're in the winter coop and can't wait for the snow to melt -- they see white on the ground and it's a hard pass to coming outside. I don't blame them (I'm an island girl myself - bring on the heat!). The cockerel is 6 months old, located in Val des Monts, Qc

It's 2023 and love is in the air. Not directly chicken related, but, our sweet boy, Rowan, is a poppa again. He's the calmest, most chill Australian Shepherd we've ever had. He watches over the chickens, warms up kiddo's feet and snuggles with the kitties too. If you're looking to add an Aussie to your family, do your research to see if they're the right fit for you and be prepared to have them in your life for their entire life. They are herding dogs, but they are also velcro dogs who have loads of energy and are stubborn as mules. Don't let their cuteness fool you. OMGosh, look at that mini-Rowan (black tri)....brings back memories.

Rabbit hutch/mini-coop for sale. Plastic has been removed. Wire mesh added underneath for predator proofing and more wood for reinforcing it. Only used two seasons. Paid $300 (with taxes) on Aosom. Asking $100. Does not come with any birds. I can throw in a few Silkie hatching eggs if I have any fresh that day though. Located in Val des Monts, Qc.

3 broodies means 3 less eggs and seeing as I only have a handful of ladies, I won't be making quiche any time soon. But if all goes well, there may be a few Silkie babies hatching in 3 weeks. Fingers crossed. I love babies. xo

The ladies are laying. Pure, amazing quality, bearded Silkie hatching eggs are available. Today I have 5 reg. Plus 1 very rare blue-green. Six eggs for one green bill. Fertility has been 100 % here. This crew is so cute and fluffy.

Hatching eggs are here! From two different pens: Ayam Cemani pen with pure Ayam Cemani hens and rooster and pure Silkie pen with a green/blue egg layer!

In the Ayam Cemani pen there is also a Legbar, a Naked Neck and an Easter Egger. 16 hatching eggs available today, collected this week. Pick up in Val des Monts. J8N0B2

Beige/pink eggs are pure Ayam Cemani, Naked Neck x Ayam Cemani. (8 eggs total)

Big blue eggs are Legbar x Ayam Cemani. Legbar x AC eggs are sexlinked, with females all black and males with white/yellow dot on head at hatch. Females grow up to look like dad, an AC with a bit of a pouf on the head like their Legbar mom. Males grow up completely barred. (2 blue eggs)

Big green eggs are Easter Egger/Olive Egger x Ayam Cemani (her mom is Legbar, her dad is Salmon Faverolle). She's a big, fluffy lady and a great layer. (2 green eggs)

Small eggs are pure Silkie with two of them being rare green/blue eggs. (4 Silkie eggs: 2 reg, 2 green/blue)

One red bill takes them home.
