Here’s a Friday Feel Good Story – Meet Oogie. He was one in a litter of kittens born under a storage building. His mama was a wild one. As the kittens grew, Oogie and his family were frequent visitors at a caring human’s nearby carport. The human, however, did not appreciate all the dead gifts that were presented to her, and the cats remained untouchable. After much effort on the part of this caring human who teamed up with Paws for Prevention, two of the kittens were trapped, neutered and returned to area. Although the human is reluctant, Oogie has decided to work on becoming a house cat. You got this, Oogie!! You are a wonderful friend to your human. We are rooting for you!

Here's our First Friday Feel Good Story for 2025...Meet Scooter!

Scooter is a large male cat who just "showed up" one day for breakfast. It was obvious that he was the new cat on the block because he was NOT popular amongst the other cats. Normally, the other cats will not accept a newcomer into their midst and will attempt to run him off. They tried, but Scooter was tenacious. Not only did he refuse to leave, he very quickly became dominant over the rest. He was an unaltered male and very large, and soon the other cats (and the 80-lb dog) cowered in fear.

Because Scooter looked healthy and well-fed, it was assumed that he relocated himself, or more likely, was dropped off in the neighborhood. Ironically, while he loathed other animals, he loved people. He became very friendly with all people in and out of the house. As he worked his way into the hearts of humans, there was one condition if he were to stay--he MUST be neutered.

The timing worked well as Paws for Prevention was experimenting with its male-only clinics. Scooter was signed up and he got to be the 'test' kitty, going first! He was patient and well-behaved, soared through the surgery, and had his ear tipped to prove to all that he is now one of the 'cool cats' in the neighborhood.

A nice bi-product of his surgery--Scooter's aggressive tendencies greatly diminished in the weeks following his surgery. Was it due to his familiarity with the household or was it a result of being neutered? Probably a combination of both. He is not perfect and will still occasionally hiss when another cat crosses his path, but most of the time he just looks the other way. His change in attitude bought him access to the house! He now sleeps where he wants (even in the sink!) and gets in the way as cats tend to do. He is a beautiful cat with a wonderful personality (most of the time). Without Paws for Prevention, it is safe to say he would not have found such a welcoming home. We are happy we could be a part of that!

Here is our Final Friday Feel Good Story for this year. However, it is in four parts and full of figures. (Sorry, no cute pictures of cats or dogs, but please read!)
Part 4… All of the figures we have shared with you in this four-part Friday Feel Good Story have been shared with you to show that Paws for Prevention has made a difference in Crawford County. We aren’t trying to “toot our own horn”, but we would like to continue to work with Crawford County residents to keep making a difference. The stray dog and cat populations will not take care of themselves. We could not have offered certificates or clinics without the cooperation of area veterinarians. We always hear how expensive vet costs are, and they are expensive-but aren’t we thankful for their services? Don’t we know that veterinarians are health care workers providing essential care? We are so thankful they are willing to accept the Paws for Prevention discount certificates. We are thankful when they allow us to bring several cats in at a time to be fixed. Below are veterinarian offices that have cooperated with Paws for Prevention by accepting our certificates and/or assisting in our TNR endeavors. Thank you so much to all the veterinarians and their staff! YOU ARE AMAZING and that makes us feel good!
We look forward to continuing on in 2025!

Part 3… We wanted to be of assistance to Crawford County Animal Control with the stray and homeless dogs that were picked up throughout the county. These dogs needed to be spayed or neutered before they found new homes. In our three years of operation, below are the figures for our “Trap Neuter Release” program in cooperation with Crawford County Animal Control dogs. These figures make us feel good!

Paws for Prevention is on PAUSE issuing certificates. We must secure adequate funding before we issue any more. We can put you on a waiting list, but we do not recommend waiting to get your pet spayed or neutered! We do plan to start up with TNR cat clinics again in early 2025. Thank you, CRAWFORD COUNTY, for your support. Please continue to follow us on our FB page for updates and future fundraising.

Part 2… The certificates mentioned in Part 1 were issued for dogs or cats; however, with the serious issue of a stray cat population throughout the county, we sponsored free “Trap Neuter and Return” clinics for cats only. They started out small - 4 or 5 trapped cats to a vet at a time. Getting appointments for these “clinics” was very difficult because Vet offices ARE BUSY!!! Soon, with the wonderful help of many volunteers, our clinics grew! And with the dedicated and amazing cooperation of one particular vet, Dr. Nanci of Pet Wellness Center of Southern Illinois, we were able to sponsor monthly clinics, averaging 20-25 cats per clinic. Volunteers would trap stray cats in their neighborhood and bring them to our clinics. Two very dear volunteers would transport the cats to the vet’s office. The cats would spend the night there, and the procedures would be done the next morning. Those same dear volunteers would make another trip to the vet to pick them up. So many volunteers were key to the success of these clinics, and we dare not try to name them as we would surely miss some. Again, if we have made any of this sound easy, it was not…and it was not free. In our three years of operation, below are the figures for this service. These figures make us feel good!

Here is our Final Friday Feel Good Story for 2024. However, it will be in four parts and full of figures. (Sorry, no cute pictures of cats or dogs, but please read!)
Part 1…For three years, Paws for Prevention (a non-profit organization) has worked throughout Crawford County to raise money in order to provide what we believe to be a valuable service. We got started by asking the Crawford County board and other city and village boards for monetary support. (Please encourage your board members to consider the control of the stray animal population a high priority, because it is certainly an issue in Crawford County!) We also had support from many businesses and individuals in Crawford County. We set up this page to get the word out. Once we had reached out to several veterinarians to gain their cooperation, we quickly got going by offering discount certificates to encourage Crawford County residents to have their pets spayed or neutered. If we have made any of this sound easy, it was not. In our three years of operation, below are the figures for this service. These figures make us feel good!

Here’s a BLACK FRIDAY Feel Good Story – This Mama was WILD! Amazingly, she was trapped along with her litter of 5 kittens. We had attempted to catch her when she had an earlier litter, but that was a no-go. Mama was not having that! We did, however, get those kittens and they were old enough to get fixed. That is a Friday Feel Good Story on its own…but, fast forward to her current litter - this litter that she was tending when we finally trapped her was too young to be taken away from her. The whole caboodle, Mama and her 5 kittens, were fostered and kenneled in a barn and cared for until it was time for weaning, and that Mama was WILD throughout that entire adventure! Her kittens were tamed and adopted by the foster human, the one with the kennel and barn, who lived about a mile from where they were trapped. After Mama was spayed as part of our “Trap Neuter & Return” program, the “return” part of the TNR was a surprise. Upon her release, Mama returned to the foster home! She must have decided life with pans of food being served to her was better than her previous life in the wild, AND she now allows petting and even an occasional pick-up to be hugged without any human blood being shed! We are happy for Mama and all those kittens, and we bet Mama is happy not having any more kittens.

So thankful for animal lovers and responsible pet owners.

Due to lack of current funding, we are unable to accept any more names for discount certificates at this time. We take pride in the assistance Paws for Prevention has given to Crawford County residents in the past three years through our certificate program and TNR clinics. We have tried various funding avenues with little success but will continue to search for new sources. Once the needed funds have been secured, we will let you know that certificates are again available. As always, we appreciate any donations that come our way. Thank you to all that have supported us in any way. All certificates that have been issued WILL be honored!! Please continue to be responsible pet owners!
