PSA: This week we experienced a well-known Doxie problem - a back injury that resulted in one of our babies really needing some extra love. We know the breed, we love the breed, and were well aware of the back issues dachshunds are prone too. We try to mitigate the risk, but these dogs just love to run and play and even as they age, they still like to act like wild animals.
We are VERY lucky as Vienna received immediate treatment and is on day 3 of recovery and walking quite well! It was scary, but we did a few things that really helped improve the outcomes and we feel inclined to share with everyone!
1. We got her to a vet to start medication to help with the inflammation around the spine/disc etc. The vet did test and the feeling in her toes and tail never left - this meant she had great odds of a recovery.
2. She got a comfy heat pad to lay on which really helped with the swelling and she was oh so COZY. I don't think she will want just a regular dog bed ever again.
3. We typically make our own dog food on top of some Purina, we added pumpkin (a great high fiber source) to the feed to keep things moving so she didn't strain or struggle
We made sure our daughters and 3 other pups acknowledged that she was on bed rest, and she was well loved and is wagging her tail and chasing cats again like nothing happened! We are VERY lucky - but we know that this problem is likely to occur again and is very common in the breed. We are sharing this information to shed light on our first experience with a back injury, and hope that no one else needs the information, but if so, we hope it helps and keeps your precious Doxie in the best condition possible!
