Coco pops came in for some pre-season love today.
It was with great sadness that we set Kia Kaha Fairytale free on Friday; free from pain and free from a life that no longer caused her joy.
A profound mare that touched many people, however this picture encapsulates her pure joy and love in life, her children.
A huge Thankyou to our one and only vet Dawne for leading her safely to the arrival of her last filly foal, and for helping her end her pain so sympathetically.
However I more-so wanted to thank Daf for ensuring a dignified end for this little mare, as I was away, while he also said goodbye to one of the original riding school mares at the same time, at the grand age of 25.
With that I leave you with a song fairy, like I do all our Brackenleigh family. Fly high, may your tail no longer swish in confusion. Our thought are with the Taylor family, and Rochelle and family.

Certainly no shrinking violet this one, 9 month old B. En Vogue (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Ophelia) checking out her other mother’s new rug.
Brackenleigh’s Patience (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Grace S.O.D Millcreek Valiant) and BSH Quixotic (Arawa Commodore X Astral MH (WB) S.O.D Anamour) have just returned home from grazing.
This means everyone is now home after an awfully dry summer and autumn, where we sent 5 out to grazing rather than utilise winter feed supplies.
Both have matured on well, though Twix aka Quixotic, yet again stole the show with his super moves….typical of his breeding, he should mature around 16.3hh.
We did some float training with Riz AKA (Brackenleigh’s Happily Ever After) last week.
This was in preparation for her big trip to the North Island. This training session was about stepping up and backing off the ramp.
Yesterday she loaded like a pro, and then early this morning loaded like a dream on the transporter….I always worry about the babies on long haul.
See you later, our little ginger ninja. Certainly won’t be the same without your larger than life personality around
Did someone say food!!!!!!! Ballytruckle Ophelia with filly foal B. En Vogue by Arawa Commodore.
Growing like a mushroom is an understatement. B Manaia (Arawa Commodore X Arawa Marama) is quickly beginning to dwarf her mother.
A few photos from the Canterbury Welsh Enthusiasts show.
Meanwhile…..in Coco Pops land……she contemplates her next Grand Prix showjumping fence.
Having conquered the strip graze fence, both ways, she decided that perhaps the ‘grass is greener on the other side’ and found herself in the lane way.
Stay tuned for more ‘Hi I’m Coco Pops the Olympic showjumping super star’ 🙄…..dare I say she is in pony prison…..probably not……gloating usually finds me wearing egg on my face. At least she is a patting freak and chases you down for them.
B. Couture (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Ophelia)
Often I would love to share photos of B. En Vogue (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Ophelia) however she is so 'in your face' that you really can't get a flattering photo of her.
This pic was taken by Gem... from outside the paddock! Very happy with this filly and hope that in time she will join the ranks of the broodmare paddock.
I have to come clean however and say that we have taken everything off the market, excluding two geldings.
It has taken 24 years to get to a place where I am over the moon with the purebred fillies we have bred. As a friend reminded me recently, we breed for performance and so they will be produced under saddle.
This breeding season we have not bred anything to allow the fillies to grow on until they are ready to produce.
After a huge hiatus from showing we dragged in B. Royal Sovereign (Arawa Commodore X Cwmkaren Duchess imp) and B. Patience (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Grace) for the Canterbury Welsh Enthusiasts show.
Both won their age group classes with Royal Sovereign then being sashed champion adult C or D and finally champion overall C or D. Patience was sashed champion youngstock C or D.
A huge Thankyou to the sponsors Pennbretti Stud, Eryri Welsh Cobs and Stephanie Osmers for their generous sponsorship.
Get your entries in for a fun weekend of horsing around. Welsh and non Welsh classes along a performance day!
The little people hanging out with the little person. Big discussion all round 😊

If you are planning on visiting tomorrow, we would like to ask that all people with floats arrive at the second entrance of 81 Branch Drain Rd, follow the drive until you see our ifor Williams float on the left and park there.
People with cars if you could arrive at 99 Branch drain road which will bring to the front of the house.
Both and Daf look forward to sharing our stock with those that visit, from a health and safety perspective we ask that no one enters paddocks with stock.
We have purebreds, and Partbreds which range from 50% to 25%……and a visiting nanny standardbred gelding!
Horses are in paddock condition as we have had nothing prepped for competition for some time.
We always enjoy a good banter about breeding so come along.
History; Brackenleigh has been breeding for 24years. We started with the imported stallion Bolgoed (s) Merry Madog imp UK and the NZ bred mare Maplepark Elena (Hewid Dafydd imp uk X Broughton Gay Girl imp Uk)
We have stock as far as Whangārei and recently an Arawa commodore daughter has been exported to UK.
We are extremely proud of the cobs we have bred and produced. Our mantra is that our stock must be rideable and competitive.
We hope you enjoy your visit with our family
As promised we are now lining up our sales team. Realistically with so many fillies bred we need to share them with the market.
As a stud our resident stallion has secured the future with fillies, we have selectively decided on those with the genetics that will complement the next generation.
The decision has been a ‘should I shouldn’t I’ however they are too talented to sit in the paddock being ‘paddock ornaments’ until they are of breeding age.
The sales will include our good show mare, youngstock and a large Partbred that should mature 16.2hh.
Stay posted to the page as we prepare them for sale.
What’s that saying?………..’Dance like no one is watching’?
B. Patience (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Grace SOD Millcreek Valiant) 2yo Filly
This one! So full of the joys of life, including cap removal! B. Happily Ever After….i think appropriately named. Interesting to see that both her and B. Manaia both have blue eyes, we have had this before and they develop into what I call a tiger eye….gold…..fingers crossed
Ah…..hello……excuse me?
What are you two doing here?
B. Patience (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Grace S.O.D Millcreek Valiant)
And
B. Couture (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Ophelia S.O.D Cwmkaren Beaufort Express imp aus)
Both taking advantage of the fact that the earth had been knocked off the electric fence 🙄. Lucky they are ‘in your face types’ to lure them back to the diet side.
Someone is filling out nicely! B. Manaia
Character +++++++ ❤️ this filly. Brackenleigh’s Happily Ever After (Arawa Commodore X Kia Kaha Fairytale)
B. Manaia
Oi! Milk bar lady! Stop!
B. Happily ever After suggesting mother should stop, and when not listened to this midget powerhouse made it quite clear 😂
Finally a name! Please welcome Brackenleigh Manaia (Arawa Commodore X Arawa Marama).
With the precedence already set with a Māori theme, Marama’s foals will have Māori names.
Manaia in Māori means guardian, messenger; beautiful or nice.
Couldn’t help but share more pictures!
And finally we welcomed the last foal of the season at a respectable time of 8.30am.
Continuing our run of fillies we would like to introduce Arawa Marama huge palomino filly with four white socks!
Carefully watched over by Daf, Steph, Mason and me from my office on camera.
I have waited over 10 years for this cross and finally good old Maz delivered. A huge thanks to Lori for the loan of her precious mare.

We have been terrible at updating everyone lately so here is an update of our last seasons foal BSH Theatrix’s. He is by the Oldenburg WB stallion Astek Quartermaster out of our home bred mare Brackenleigh’s Applause (Welsh Cob X TB). He is now 10 months old and stands slightly taller than his dam who is 15.2hh. For the past two seasons we have left the foals on the mares for 10 to 12 months and have found the results have been super for both mare and foal. It is our hope that B. Applause will be put to the showjumping WB sire Diamant B in the coming spring.
The yearlings came home, in preparation for a foal show. I was hoping for extravagant movement…..turns out they more wanted to hang out with us. B.Couture (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Ophelia) chestnut and B. Patience (Arawa Commodore X Ballytruckle Grace) bay. While their tails have been eaten off, by our foal, they are developing well and progressing beautifully with their training. Both are typically awkward in their growth but they need some ‘life experiences’ so a short outing will develop their training further. Their personal development is more important than ribbons for us as they have their future ahead of them
How cute is this Arawa Commodore colt! This is another wonderful example of Commodore over Thoroughbred mares, this guy was bred by Cath Peter of Nelson and he is certainly showing that he will be one to watch in the future!
BSH Theatrix keeping his mum B. Applause on her toes as he heads off for yet another hoon. As both Daf and I have covid this is about as far as us grandads get to the paddocks atm.
If there is water involved at Brackenleigh then you can always guarantee there will be a Cwmkaren Duchess child who will either be in it, under it…..or caused it. While duchess never had this water infatuation her children do. The number of troughs we have had to replace, as they love to get in them, has been lost. Here are our full siblings B. Royal Honours and B. Royal Sovereign playing under the Irrigator……this went on for quite some time 🙄😂
Well we are just super happy with Uber’s (BSH Rataxus) first saddle outing. This is ride number seven for him and he happily walked and trotted in a very big ring of green horses despite only being ridden 6 times before this. We pulled him from his last two classes as we felt he had had a wonderful outing and his baby brain was full to capacity with things to think about. Here is a short clip of Mr Cool, Calm and Collected.
