Some advice if you’re struggling with recall:
Make yourself RELEVANT to your dog!
Make them want to engage with you!
>>>Leashwork on walks is so so crucial for this<<<
Walks with your dog are not a time to be scrolling on your phone📱 Be present + bond with them.
Don’t expect your dog to be tuned in with you unless you’re tuned in yourself!
You can also do recall exercises with your pup like this and make it capital F Fun for them to come to you every time.
In the meantime, keep them on a long leash. Don’t let them off leash until you KNOW they’ll come back every time. Don’t give them the opportunity to blow you off!
Follow through with your commands. Every time. Show your dog that when you ask them for something, it’s not in 3mins when they’re done sniffing that tree 🌳 When you say “come!” it means come now.
That’s all for today🌞
Can’t stress enough how grateful I am for these hands-free walks with Milo🫶🏻
When I first adopted him he was really over-stimulated on walks. As soon as we would set foot out the door he was distracted + super excited by everything. No chance of getting his attention, I was irrelevant to him!
We were living in Montreal so of course there was no shortage of city smells and noises to distract his attention.
For years we worked really hard and made a loooot of mistakes along the way. But dog training is trial and error! No matter how hard I felt like I was failing, Milo would be ready the next morning to go along with whatever I had in mind. I’m glad he was so patient with me during those years. We have such a peaceful, easy relationship today.
The point of posting these videos is not to brag or make other dog owners feel bad. I’m just glad that when I’m running late to work, I can walk him and have a quick snack at the same time.
Also very grateful I get to help other dog owners reach their relationship goals with their dogs. Can’t believe this is my life :)))))
Thanks for reading!
Had an encounter with a couple of dogs while out with Zolti today - one was off-leash😵💫
Zolt is a little reactive with dogs coming into his space.
I’ve kinda been waiting for something like this to happen so I can see what sets him off + what areas we need to work on.
It took me a long time working with dogs to actually get excited about moments like these. When trying to work on a dog’s triggers (reactivity toward other dogs, prey drive, fear of strangers, etc) it’s easy to get stressed + tense up when you feel like something is about to set them off. Don’t get me wrong - some situations can be dangerous and there can be real cause for concern!
But in this case, I spotted the other dogs when they were still very far away. The owners were paying attention to what was going on and had their dogs walking beside them despite one being off leash. They assured me that their dog wouldn’t come close and I informed them that we were working on Zolt’s reactivity. He lunged when they walked past us and I refocused his attention on me. They hung around by the side of the water for a while which gave us the chance to work through some of those big feelings he was having!
These situations can be scary. But so long as:
-There is enough physical space for you to move away if need be
-The variable in question is controlled (won’t come running at you🐿️)
-You’re confident you can guide your dog through the feelings that will come up,
then try to see the situation as a learning opportunity instead of something to be afraid of. It’s important when working with reactive dogs to put the dog in (reasonably) excitable situations and bring their excitement back down. This teaches them to self-regulate their emotions and keep their cool even when their instinct is telling them to do otherwise. Over time, that thing that always sets your dog off will just become background noise🤸🏻

Gimme gimme never gets🙃
Ok, this trick is an easy one! And trust me, your fingers will thank you for teaching it to your dog if he/she gets a little nippy.
Gus here gets a little too excited to get his treats (after all, he did work hard for them) and bites my fingers every time he takes them from me. So we took a break from our leash drills today to teach him some manners.
It’s real simple:
Hold a treat in a closed fist and offer it to your dog. If they bite, stay firm and keep your fist closed (you might want to wear some gloves for protection). Once they stop biting and start licking/softly nibbling at your hand, say “gentle” and open your palm to give them the treat.
Et voila! Your work here is done. Nice job⭐️
