Amen, all the time.

The problem with the comment “I’ll take him”.

When we see the comment “I’ll take him!” on one of our posts we usually get pretty excited. We hope that it means one of our rescue dogs will soon be getting adopted and then we will have room for a new dog who needs us.

Unfortunately, 98% of the time the person who leaves the comment never does anything else. We don’t receive an email or adoption application. The comment receives a bunch of likes and the commenter is called “wonderful” and a “hero”, but they never actually follow through on adopting.

Yes, this is annoying for the rescue or shelter, but it can actually be harmful for the animal. When other people see someone, or many people, comment “I’ll take him” then they think that animal is safe. Other potential adopters think the animal has a lot of interest and will be adopted so they won’t share the post or apply to adopt themselves.

We see this so much on social media. An animal who has “a ton of interest” but no actual applications or potential adopters.

Please think twice before leaving a comment like “I’ll take him” on a post if you truly have no intention of following through. Your comment may dissuade someone else from sharing or applying to adopt. If you’re not in a position to adopt, then sharing the post is the best thing you can do to help.
