Halloween can create many issues for us, but nothing that can’t be dealt with, without too much drama. Things to think about, scary children, tasty toxic treats and disastrous doorbells. This may seem like a bit of an odd subject to write about for someone that trains dogs, whose wife runs a dog training business. But it’s important as there has been a boom in “dog trainers”, with lots of bits of paper, that are ultimately meaningless. There is no governing body that covers dog trainers and behaviorists. There are organizations that monitor trainers and enable them to put letters after their name, but the reality is, these are businesses so “trainers” are paying to have these letters....

I want to start this by saying if anyone believes this is cruel, or abusive to your dog, come racing with me. If a dog doesn’t want to do something they won’t, all I use is verbal commands, no whips, sticks etc. when our husky sees his racing harness, he goes mad, he is so excited. This is not to say if not done correctly you won’t harm your dog, but we will go into how to safely run/bike/scoot/mush with your dog....

Whether another dog, a cat, chicken, ferret or any other small furry we want our dogs to be friendly with them. I have been prompted to write this because of a personal experience I had and the way it made me feel. I was walking 3 of our dogs, one of whom was Fenrir our husky, all authorities on Siberian huskies agree, that as a result of their extremely high prey drive they should not be walked off the lead unless in an enclosed area, as a result of this I had all 3 dogs on the lead, an off lead dog came running up, the owners shouting in the distance, the dog paying no attention....

The first thing to remember is no dog ever died from not being walked. As the temperatures rise, before any walk we should ask ourselves would we go for a walk bare foot with a fur coat on? If the answer is no then you shouldn’t be walking your dog. If you are to walk your dog, do it as early or as late as possible, definitely avoid between 1200 and 1500 (the hottest part of the day) when we do go for a walk, consider where you walk, can you avoid tarmac or concrete areas?...

If your dog bites or has a history of biting, this is a very serious matter with potentially very serious consequences. The first thing I would recommend is muzzling your dog, it can be a soft muzzle, but should there be an incident without precautions and there is already a bite history, your dog will almost certainly be destroyed/put to sleep, and you could be prosecuted....
