When we say do what you have to do to control the environment, this is what we mean. This is no hate to the guy who dropped his dogs leash, he truly meant no harm, was very polite, and his dog did seem quite friendly. However, Valentino, the little poodle you see here, came to us because he was afraid of his own shadow as well as other dogs. This manifested in incessant barking at other dogs to the point where his owner couldn’t take him anywhere. With some confidence building and exposure Valentino came a long way, and even a friendly dog rushing up to him previously would’ve made him very nervous. Not allowing other dogs to rush him played a very small but important part in building his confidence in himself, in us, and his environment. If he can trust that nothing bad will happen to him, the reactivity melts away! Generally the less eventful you can make it, the better. If your dog doesnt like being picked up, avoid picking them up in these situations. Avoid screaming and over reacting, as this can contribute to reactivity. Instead, assuming you think the other dog is safe, you can step in between your dog and the other dog and even grab the other dogs leash while remaining calm. If you think the dog charging may bite or seems unsure of you, avoid reaching down to grab the leash and do what you have to in order to keep yourself and your dog safe! If youre struggling with reactivity, dont be afraid to advocate for your dog and ask for space.
