We are just weeks away from our first frost, which is the natural wrap to the end of our season. It flew by... but at the same time, April (when we harvested our first 2022 flower), seems like an eternity ago.

As we begin to steadily put our land "to bed" for the season, we also continue to plan for seasons to come. This is the outline of 2 of the 13 new rows we hope to have in before the ground becomes to frozen to amend. Wish us luck!

Today I'm going to do my best to celebrate celebrating. Jordan would have been 28 today. The last few months have been a jumble of mixed emotions, but mostly a whole lot of denial and heartache. Today I don't want to push the feelings aside, but I also don't want to focus solely on the depths of the grief.

Almost three years ago Jordan bought a trip to a two week yoga/meditation retreat in Mexico. He called us to tell us about the trip and that he was driving down from Fort Collins so he could take himself to a fancy dinner at the Urban Farmer to celebrate booking the trip. When we hung up I looked at Justin and said, "Only Jordan can find away to celebrate celebrating." We laughed and continued to use the phrase as Jordan continued to live life to it's fullest. 

This morning Justin and I picked up coffee, visited Red Rocks (a Jordan favorite) and had lunch on a new patio in Olde Town, drinking in the sunshine while telling favorite stories about Jordan. And tonight we will go to dinner at the Urban Farmer and hopefully tell even more of a too-short, but we'll lived life.

I miss him with all the energy that is in the Universe, but I strive to love with all of that same energy of the Universe. And I hope to Celebrate Celebrating any chance I get.

Today I felt a spark of joy that I haven't felt in almost exactly a year.  Don't get me wrong, I have felt joy in various forms over the past year, but just not in this particular way.  It was the joy of being able to truly connect with a new person, on a meaningful level, over hours of time; the process of REALLY getting to know someone.  While masked and outside of course, but the distance we have all felt over these past 12 months felt a bit less vast for me today.  

Today we welcomed our first ever intern and apprentice, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and other than my ears hurting from wearing my mask all day, the rest of me felt absolutely delighted.  A step towards normal.  And do you know how much more you can accomplish with four hands as opposed to just two?  It's like double.  We are so thrilled to have this amazing and curious crew working alongside us this season.  So thrilled for all to come.

Cancel those unwanted catalogues!  A month or two after the holidays is when these ugly, tree killers start to arrive in droves.  You likely ordered a few tough-to-find gifts online and now you are on "the list."  Most items are easier to find on a company's website, where their search filters allow you to distill down to the items you are truly interested in. 

If it's a catalogue you truly enjoy thumbing through, by all means KEEP IT.  But if it's one that goes straight to the recycle bin, cancel it.  The company's 1-800 number will be on the back of the catalogue and it will likely take you less than 5 minutes.

Seed saving! Raise your hand if you do it 🤚 Highly recommended to give it a try if you don't already save your seeds. I'll talk more about this in the fall, when it's actually seed saving season, but it's on my mind as I'm sorting and "havesting" all of the heads I didn't have time to deal with back in the fall.

And just to prevent yourself from any trouble, be sure to only save seeds that are not patented or trademarked. I'll go into that in the future, but also happy to answer questions now if you have them.

We're sprouting new and exciting flowers over here. Most people are familiar with seeds and bulbs, but corms are a little less well known. Corms are the energy source that creates the magic that is both Ranunculus and Anemones. You'll be seeing both from us this spring!

We soaked these little beauties and then tucked them into some moist seed starting mix to "chill" and sprout for a few weeks. I'll post a pic of the sprouts once they're ready.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is such a great resource if you're interested in knowing where your health, beauty and cleaning products rank from a health perspective.  The EU bans over 1300 chemicals from being used in cosmetic products.  The US (FDA) bans 11.  ELEVEN!  It's up to us as consumers to do our own research and this is what makes the EWGs work so invaluable.  Check out their site and get to know their Consumer Guides.  Read my complete post over on our blog, link in bio.

Sustainable Sunday (posted Monday).  Know your recycler.  Nearly everything CAN be recycled, but that doesn't mean your recycler/hauler takes everything.  Familiarize yourself with the recycling rules of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) that your recycler hauls to.  Here are the most common misnomers within single-stream recycling:

What plastics are accepted? (Example: Ours is #1-7)

Does it accept plastic bags? Most don't.

Glass. Standard beverage bottles YES, other glass (kitchen drinkware. Win) typically NO.

Wax/plastic lined beverage cups, bowels and plates are typically NOT accepted. (Example: your favorite coffee shop to-go cup)

Plastic utensils are typically NOT accepted.

Straws. 100% trash!

There are also "hard to recycle" facilities that fill in on some of the single-stream gaps. These facilities will likely come with a nominal fee, which hopefully won't deter you. Consumerism inherently comes with the responsibility of the full lifecycle, by buying a good we each need to accept the cost of responsibly disposing of the item.
