We have been closely monitoring the weather for shipping this week. As many of you know, we are in Plant City, around Central Florida area. At this moment, tomorrow (Tuesday) the low for our area is expected to be 39. Discoids are a tropical roach species and do not do well in temperatures below 60.

Since this week has already been a shortened shipping week due to the holiday, and Florida is going to be experiencing more low temperatures this week and weekend, we are making the difficult decision to postpone shipments until next week.

If you’d prefer to go ahead and place your order in advance to go out Monday the 22nd, you can! Currently the weather is showing much warmer temps after this coming weekend so shipping should be fine for next week. Fingers crossed!!

Our number 1 priority is making sure our discoids arrive in the same condition as when they left our care. Their health is important because we know their main purpose is to nourish so many beloved scaly family members!

I expect USPS to experience some delays this week due to the weather. Not with just live animal/insect shipments, but all packages. At some point we have all experienced the frustrations that come with not receiving your package in the timeframe you initially expected. When shipping live animals or insects, it’s even more nerve wracking! From the moment they leave our care the clock is ticking and how they are handled is completely out of our control.

We thank you for your patience this week. We hope you, your family, and all of your furry/scaly family members stay warm this week and weekend ❤️

My sincere apologies for not returning messages as quickly this weekend. We have been caring for one of our donkeys, and his health declined and he went down fast. Most of our time and energy as of lately has been devoted to trying to help him. If you know us, you know we pour our heart and soul into our animals! We had to make the tough decision of letting him go today.. it’s been rough.

We are still packing up any orders that were placed over the weekend to go out today. At this time, we have made the decision to hold off on receiving any more orders until December 26th. We will still be here for any questions you have, but just know the response time may be longer than usual. We need some time to grieve.

We appreciate you guys and thank you for your understanding!! 🙏😭

No matter what you may or may not celebrate this upcoming weekend, we hope you have a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday with your friends, family, loved ones and of course your pets ❤️

“Is this an albino roach??”

It’s a common question we receive from our customers!

During a discoid’s lifetime, they will shed their exoskeleton 7 times from their journey as a brand new nymph to becoming an adult! During this morphing process as they shed, they will temporarily become white and squishy for about an hour or so until their new exoskeleton has a chance to dry out. Once it’s dry, the new exoskeleton becomes hard and darkens in color.

Did you know they can cannibalize during this phase? If there is insufficient food, overcrowding, or places to hide/burrow…or unfortunately sometimes it’s just wrong place, wrong time! 😢

A couple questions we are often asked about discoids in regards to feeding…

What do I feed them?
How often?

You do not have to buy anything special to feed them! Pretty much any fruit or veggies you are offering your reptiles will be fine to also offer your feeder discoids or a colony.

Here’s some of what we rotate through depending on what’s in season and available:
- carrots
- greens (collard, mustard, turnip)
- spinach
- squash
- mango
- papaya
- banana
- potatoes
- blueberries
- strawberries
- blackberries
- dragon fruit
- kale
- oranges*

* Use caution when offering oranges to discoids if planning on feeding them off to your reptile soon! If citrus is fed to feeder discoids, feed them something else for a few days so they have time to process the acidity and become safe again to use as feeders.

Any fresh fruits/veggies offered should be removed and replaced about every 2-3 days. This will offer fresh hydration & reduce risk of mold or flies forming.

*** ALWAYS wash all produce to reduce risk of pesticide/insecticide exposure! ***

If you find yourself struggling to keep your produce fresh before your reptile or feeders can use it all, I highly recommend this veggie keeper! Keeps fruit and veggies fresh for WEEKS!

These guys KNOW when it’s time to eat! As we are prepping their food, I can hear them scurrying around their bin waiting in anticipation!

This late night feed the other night was carrots and banana and a refill on water crystals and our homemade chow!

Brand new nymph! We just finished harvesting a bin and when we went to add the adults back into their bin, found a few of these little guys at the bottom! Either they were hitching a ride, or someone was actively giving birth. I didn’t search through the egg crates to see because I didn’t want to stress mama roach out.

Is it just me, or are discoid nymphs so stinkin cute?! 😍🪳

Have you ever wondered what we feed our discoids? Here’s a snippet of feeding day..all purchased from our local market ❤️

Todays menu includes: carrots, bananas, and oranges! A much needed extra hydration boost with the warmer temperatures! ☀️🥕🍊🍌

Oranges are considered an aphrodisiac for roaches, helping to promote breeding in your colony! 😉

**Oranges make an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and hydration! Use caution if feeding citrus to your feeder discoids. We recommend feeding them something else for a couple days before feeding them off to a reptile so they have time to be gutloaded with something else and lessen their acidity from the oranges.

***As with ANY produce, it is imperative that you wash and rinse your produce very well to reduce the risk of pesticide exposure!!

We are closely monitoring the tropical depression and how it could impact our state. Many of our customers we have met this year have recently moved to Florida, here are some tips I’d like to share to prepare your pets in case this turns into a hurricane.

We only have 1 bearded dragon, but we also have cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, cows, and donkeys to look after when a storm hits….oh and roaches! 🤣🪳

For a reptile, especially a bearded dragon:
- Feed them well right before a storm and make sure they have proper basking time to allow optimal digestion
- make sure to have enough live insects for a couple weeks after the storm, in case the storm impacts shipments
- If your power goes out and you do not have a generator, do not feed your reptile protein unless you are able to safely take them outside to warm up and get some natural UVB. For our dragon, I have a netted playpen I can take outside and put him in to keep him safe while he soaks up some sun (link in comments). Remember, glass does not allow UVB to pe*****te so putting them in a window does not allow UVB exposure. Heat and UVB are CRUCIAL to the digestion of bugs!
- If you need to evacuate, have a small pet carrier you can put your reptile in to safely transport. If possible, bring their lighting or a spare set. Or something to safely take them outside for natural UVB.
- In a pinch and you need protein, you can scramble an egg (no salt, oil, butter, seasoning..etc). But again, they NEED uvb/heat to digest!
- Make sure to have some salad items put away for them. Veggies keepers work great to keep them fresh and crisp for a couple weeks in the fridge! (Link in comments)

For feeder bugs
- Make sure they have enough food
- Feed them before the storm
- Use water crystals and dry chow to help supplement if you run out of veggies to feed/hydrate them

For your cats/dogs
- have pet carriers ready and easily accessible in case you need to evacuate
- Have leashes/collars accessible
- Have any pet medications bagged, labeled and easily accessible.
- Grab an extra bag of food for them this weekend
- Get a couple new toys or bones to help keep them occupied and their mind at ease during the storm
- Thunder shirts work GREAT for dogs with anxiety, also CBD oil!
- Fill up extra water containers not only for your drinking water, but also some extras for your pets!
- If your cats/dogs mostly stay outside, please bring them in for the storm!

These are just a few tips I thought of that we use to prepare our animals for a hurricane. I hope the storm fizzles out and does not impact anyone, but it’s better to be prepared just in case!

We know this can be a nerve wracking time for many people! Especially with the costs of everything going up, it makes it harder to prep with such short notice. This week we met Gary at the Florida State Fairgrounds. He is a Blaberus giganteus, also known as a giant cave roach! 🪳 You can bet we were geeking out when we saw this handsome big guy! 😍

B.giganteus are in the same genus as our Blaberus discoidalis, the visual difference is our discoids are a little smaller.

If you get the chance to visit the Florida State Fair, make sure to check out the UF Entomology & Nematology Department booth and say hi to Gary! 👋
