The gorgeous Pickle came in for a re-examination with Dr Gerard McLauchlan (European and RCVS Specialist in Internal Medicine).

Pickle has tracheal collapse which is a progressive condition affecting his airways. It is commonly seen in Yorkshire Terriers and Pomeranians. Most patients can be medically managed but when this is not effective either a stent can be placed inside the trachea or rings placed around the outside of the trachea to aid support and help breathing.

Fortunately Pickle is not at the stage of requiring any interventions and was discharged on some medication to try at home.

Pickles brother, the equally handsome Soldier, not actually related but live together) underwent ring placement for the same condition over 2 years with Gerard and Dr Jonathan Bray. We are delighted to hear he is enjoying a brilliant quality of life at home and requires no medication at all!

The Interventional Radiology/Oncology service at AURA is the most experienced in Europe.

Dr McLauchlan is the only Specialist in Europe who has completed extensive Fellowship training in the field and is regularly invited to lecture nationally and internationally on this topic.

The final condition that rears its head more in the warm summer months is tracheal collapse.

Tracheal collapse in dogs happens when the trachea, or windpipe is unable to maintain its shape during normal breathing action. When breathing in there is a tendency for the windpipe to flatten which narrows the airway due to its inability to resist the negative pressure associated with the action of breathing in.

Commons signs include:
• Unusual noise when breathing
• Persistent coughing
• Exercise intolerance
• Acute respiratory arrest
• Fainting

Certain breeds are more likely to suffer from tracheal collapse such as Toy Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese and Chihuahuas. These breeds can make a ‘honking’ noise that is often characteristic of tracheal collapse.

Treatments for tracheal collapse include medical management and lifestyle adjustments to manage the symptoms for less severe cases, or for more severe cases solutions may be surgery or intra-luminal stents.

Next time we will look at a recent AURA patient with this condition, so keep an eye on our social media to find out more!

13/06/2024

This time as part of our summer respiratory conditions awareness campaign, we are looking at Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, or simply BOAS.

This condition is a common issue among short-nosed, or brachycephalic, breeds such as French Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Pekingese. BOAS can have a profound impact on their breathing often effecting sleep, excercise and digestive health.

Due to their compact facial structure, flat faced dogs have little room in their heads and nasal passages meaning there is reduced space in their airways when compared to other longer nosed breeds, meaning they struggle to breathe, even when resting.

Additional problems due to the unusual structure such as narrow nostrils, a thick, long soft palate, and a smaller voice box or windpipe can compound the issue.

If left untreated BOAS can lead to severe respiratory distress, particularly under stress, following exercise or warm temperatures. Due to the stress placed on the body due to the constant effort to breathe, gastrointestinal issues can develop in the form of regurgitation of food or froth, additionally behavioural issues due to discomfort and lack of sleep can develop over time.

Common signs to look out for include:
• Intense snoring
• Noisy breathing
• Effortful breathing - particularly in heat or following exercise
• Coughing and gagging - bringing up white froth/foam
• Fainting or collapse
• Sleep apnoea
• Behavioural changes - irritability and lethargy

Today we take our first look at one of the conditions we see more frequently during the warm summer months, laryngeal paralysis.

Dogs with laryngeal paralysis cannot regulate their airway due to the vocal cords becoming paralysed, preventing them from opening properly when breathing. This means pets can become overheated and struggle to breathe when temperatures rise.

Signs can develop slowly, and can sometimes seem like normal ageing-reduced exercise intolerance and slower walks. As the condition progresses it can become life-threatening so early intervention and veterinary care can help maintain comfort levels and avoid crises. Risk of developing laryngeal paralysis increases with age, particularly in large-breed dogs.

Symptoms to look out for include:

• Noisy breathing
• Change in bark
• Difficulty breathing
• Coughing and gagging
• Exercise intolerance

If you are concerned about any of these symptoms in your pet then contact your veterinarian for advice.

As we go into the warmer months of the year (well hopefully!) we start to see an increase in patients with respiratory conditions.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at these 3 conditions, laryngeal paralysis, BOAS and tracheal collapse.

This is Blue. Today she was a hero for one of our inpatients as she gave blood. She was one of the patients who responded to our late night blood donor request yesterday.

Blue's Mum called our team after seeing our post, but not on our account infact on the owners of the poorly patient! As it turns out Blue lives in the next door village to the patient who needed blood. Her mum made the 3hr round trip to help a strangers cat in neighbouring village! A true testament to pure kindness 🤍

• MICHELLE • NURSING WITH NEURODIVERSITY

"As a profession, we are embracing the fact that each of us are different and have different skills and interests. This especially goes for us who are neurodivergent.

Everyone learns differently and the resources needed to support these differences vary from person to person and are most helpful to help us thrive in such a fast-paced environment.

Being on the autism spectrum, having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia, I learnt differently from my peers and struggled in communication and other social situations, but I have a brain that thinks ‘outside of the box’ and can think of things others don’t.

I started my nursing career as a patient care assistant. 3 years later I was a proud qualified RVN whom took the leap from primary care to a referral centre only a year after qualifying, and what a shock to the system that was.

Taking the leap into referral, was hard and the skills I had learnt previously were a foundation to what was yet to come. Referral nursing tested my skills in intensive nursing, anaesthesia and medical oncology. However, with the support of my colleagues, my skills have advanced to a point where I am glad I made the leap.

Having to work with many people and speaking to clients, my communication skills have improved, and I feel more confident in approaching people and starting a conversation.

Also, my nursing skills have come a long way since starting in referral nursing. I can now place IV’s confidently, with many being clean stick IV’s and take blood samples with ease (most of the time). On an almost daily basis, I’m draining chest drains, monitoring critical patients in wards, theatre and during CT’s, giving chemotherapy, calculating drugs and speaking to clients.

Registered Veterinary Nurses come from all backgrounds, whether that be ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability and we need to embrace the differences we all bring to make a more inclusion environment. We all have something to bring to nursing, but some of us may need that little extra bit of support for our chance to shine.

Embrace your differences, you are all fabulous!"

A HUGE Happy Birthday to Nelson! Nelson has been under the care of our specialist Dr Quentin Fournier and the medical oncology team for nearly 3 years.

We had a lovely message and photo from Nelson's family yesterday showing his birthday celebrations!

"Here is a picture of Nelson celebrating his 9th Birthday today one we didn’t think he’d see.
Thank you to Quentin and his team for saving his life.
Nelson looks forward to seeing you all soon for possibly his final 6 month check"

In our medical oncology team we have two medical oncology interns. Claudia and Abel (in the grey scrubs) are qualified vets undertaking further training in the medical oncology field under supervision of our team of medical oncology specialists.

The interns works closely with medical oncology nurses Sarah and Carl, and Abel had shared his appreciation for the work that the nurses do in supporting him as an intern at AURA.

"Nurses are one of the vital components in the running engine of a prosperous clinic. They are fundamental pillars of support to all services. That is an undisputed fact!

They definitely play an important role in guiding interns. As accessible persons with the necessary integrity and experience, a huge amount can be learnt about animal handling, practical operations, and communication with owners and staff. In Aura Veterinary's medical oncology service, we are lucky to work with experienced nurses who have their hearts in the right place for colleagues and animals."

Dotty is a 5 year old Springer Spaniel, who came into AURA as an emergency. Dotty had surgery the night before at her local vet practice for an emergency C-Section and spay. She had been in labour for a long period of time and only passed one puppy naturally. Her local vet delivered 8 beautiful puppies, 3 girls and 6 boys.

Sadly Dotty had suffered a complication following her C-Section. She had had some dripping and oozing blood from the wound site and was subdued, and so she was referred to AURA.

Dotty arrived at AURA with her 8 puppies, and after examination the team found that Dotty’s incision was starting to split open, and that the omentum (the fatty tissue layer of her organs in her abdominal cavity) was starting to prolapse. This meant that Dotty needed immediate revision surgery, and the wards team kept a close eye on Dotty’s puppies.

Dotty recovered well from her second surgery. She continued to interact well with her puppies, and the team continued to monitor the new family. The following day the team decided it would be best for Dotty and her puppies to go home an recover in the comfort of her own belongings!

Dotty and the puppies continue to do well, and we will keeping a close eye on Dotty’s recovery.

Apollo is an 11 year old Weimaraner, who was referred to see Dr Gerard McLauchlan back in September 2023. He was referred following a diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma for a potential embolisation.

After a discussion with Gerard and his team the family opted for Apollo to undergo a prostatic embolisation. This is where the team perform a minimally invasive procedure that kills the main blood supply to the tumour. This procedure has been performed in over 40 patients at AURA and in some cases resulted in up to 40% reduction in prostatic volume, improved clinical signs and in excess of 14% survival time!

Apollo had his procedure back in October 2023. Yesterday the team were so delighted to receive the following photos from his Mummy with a lovely update!

"After having the prostate embolization procedure at Aura we weren't sure if he'd make it to Christmas, then he did, so the next step was would he make to his 11th birthday which was 15th March, I really wasn't sure but omg he has and smashed it, he is attending The Herbal vets for Chinese acupuncture and Chinese herbal tincture and doing well with it.

We have just completed a 100km walk for March for dementia, granted he didn't do it all but probably about half to three quarters.

Not sure what our next goal will be but just having him here every day is a bonus. So thank you all for giving him/us a chance."

We are so THRILLED that Apollo is doing so well and can't wait to get our next update! Big cuddles to Apollo from Gerard and all the team!

Elvis is a GORGEOUS 3 year old oriental short-haired cat. He came to us an emergency 8 days ago.

He was showing a range of symptoms that included lethargy, some episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea and reduced appetite.

His family were concerned about FIP (Feline infectious peritonitis), as another of their family cats had previously been diagnosed with this.

Elvis was immediately admitted and started on supportive treatment and scheduled and diagnostic investigations were organised.

Results later on revealed a very strong suspicion for FIP and Elvis was started on the relevant medications. He responded very well within a few days and his clinical and clinicopathological values improved significant. He was discharged to join his family, within a few days on oral medications and he is due a re-examination with us in 4 weeks!

Elvis is the sweetest fur baby and we are so happy that we could help him live his best life with his companion and humans he loves the most!

🐶🐈 Our ward team cares for all our hospitalised patients, participating in morning and evening rounds as well as conducting their own nurse rounds.

They focus on managing recovery from surgeries, procedures, and investigations.

Each day, the wards host a mix of outpatients and patients requiring pain management during their hospitalisation.

Recognising that pets miss home and family during their stay, our ward nurses, along with our dedicated VCA team, provide regular cuddles and attention to ensure all patients receive the extra TLC they need to feel better.

We're currently seeking ward nurses! Explore our current vacancies by clicking the recruitment link in our highlights.

Adorable little Katy came to see Dr Gerard McLauchlan as an initial urgent consultant yesterday. She was referred by her local vet for inappetence, lethargy and vomiting. She had also been admitted to her local vets for the 6 days prior.

The team performed an ultrasound, and ran some diagnostic tests. Katy has hospitalised due to her high temperature and others symptoms. The team have been keeping a close eye her and suspect she may be suffering from pancreatitis. We hope that Katy feels better soon, so she can return home to her loving family 🤍

Here Katy is pictured in our private garden with Rotational Veterinary Intern Steph

Meet Molly! Molly is a 9 year old cockapoo and has been under Dr Gerard McLauchlan care for the last 3 and a half years!

She's under medical management for IBD. Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a condition that many humans suffer with, but very few people realise that our pets can also suffer with it!

Mollys condition is managed on a low dose of steriods, and another medication used to help control her immune system. She is also on a special diet.

She comes to visit the team every 6 months for a check up and a blood test. The team always look forward to her visits, she's a very happy girl!

Here she is with Senior RVN (interventional radiology) Jen during her visit today 💕

Fern first visited Dr Iain Grant and our medical oncology service in May 2018 due to a diagnosis of diffuse B cell lymphoma.

She was treated with a 25-week CHOP chemotherapy protocol, completing her treatment in November 2018 and gained complete remission. She sadly relapsed in April 2019 and received a second round of the 25-week CHOP until October 2019.

Remission was confirmed and she has since been visiting our medical oncology team each month for physical examination and lymph node assessment.

Today marks Fern’s 90th visit to our hospital and we are very pleased to confirm she is still in complete remission. Fern is a lovely girl and is well known within the hospital. We are all so proud of her 😊

We were very pleased to see this month two of our feline patients previously treated with chemotherapy for their nasal lymphoma. Both were extremely ill at their initial consultations, Pascha with severe acute kidney failure as his lymphoma had spread to both kidneys; Simba was open mouth breathing as he was struggling to breath.

Both had short 3-4 months protocols that our medical oncology team modified to improve the efficacy, and both are still doing well a year later!
