When is it acceptable to play rough with your dog?

Playing rough with your dog can be a great way to let off some energy and build that bond with your dog. However, if you don’t know how to get your dog to switch off, your dog may become overstimulated and this may lead to other issues which can be dangerous for yourself, your dog and others around.
So make sure you can switch off playtime at any time YOU choose to do so.

Don’t let the cold weather deter you from still going out and enjoying them long walks with your dog. I’ve noticed people are shortening their walks, especially when their dog is constantly pulling on the lead. Cold hands and a dog on a mission is not a good combination

Is your dog pulling on the lead? Does putting their lead on become a fight in itself? Are they jumping up at visitors? Rushing out the front door the second it’s opened?

Whether your dog is just a puppy or a big lump that dribbles everywhere🤤
It is extremely important to be able to get your dogs to switch their full attention onto you at any given time, situation or place.

If you own multiple dogs and are struggling with this then just spend time with them individually to work on this and to build them up to a level you’re confident with. Then you can think about adding another dog into the training down the line.

Meet Genji🐶👋🏻

Today I’ve done some recall work with Genji, keeping it fun and simple as he’s never been on a long lead. So we’ve took a step back, put him on a long lead and started with the basics.

Why a long lead?-
Long leads are great for giving your dog more freedom while still having control of what they are doing. They’re a safe and effective way to practice recall training that will allow you to confidently let your dog off the lead completely. Everybody should be using long leads to work on recall, as it allows you to correct your dog’s mistakes when in training. If your dog is off the lead and it decides to run off, you have no control. It’s also a safe way of making sure your dog doesn’t get itself hurt by running up to the wrong dog, who may not be friendly.

Don't be that owner who has to scream ‘it’s friendly, it’s okay’ just because you’re unable to recall your dog! Put your dog on a long lead while training that perfect recall.

ENGAGEMENT! - What is it?
Engagement within dog training is where you teach your dog that listening to you is rewarding.
Dogs are one of the few animals that make eye contact with other species. Using this to your advantage and building on it to encourage eye contact will help build engagement.

A dog who has practiced engagement is easier to train; you will form a stronger bond, which will allow your dog to handle distractions better and will make training sessions more enjoyable for the pair of you.

Little tip for anyone struggling to tire your dog out😴 One of the most common reason that people struggle to tire their dog out is that they don’t have recall they need to allow their dog to roam and have a run around. Put your dog on a long lead and you’ll feel so much more relaxed and in control while your dog still gets a run around. Still ensure you’re putting In the work with actual recall training to make both yours and your dogs walks more enjoyable👊🏻
