Cane Corso history - The fall of the Roman Empire predicated the fall of the Roman war dog, however this was not the end for this type of dog. The Italian country folk were always in need of a good working dog, a farmhand, a hunter and a guardian. There are many depictions of dogs during this era that followed which depict the characteristics of the Cane Corso and its role. In many cases there’s writings from historians referencing these dogs as Cane Corso, to leave no doubt.
The large, tusked wild boar was found in abundance in almost every country of the ancient Roman world and particularly so in Italy. Much of the history of the dog can be traced to being a dog of choice tasked with the hunting and apprehension of this dangerous beast which has always been a great trophy to hunters worldwide. In much of this old era artwork there are also other types of dogs depicted which were used to assist in the hunt, usually with the appearance of a sight-hound. The Corso was always tasked with bringing an end to the chase and catching the wild beast, no easy feat which can prove deadly.
Hundreds of years later, there is much debate by new world dog breeders and enthusiasts that will argue much of the changes that these dogs have gone through from those days to present era. One thing I can control and I know for sure is that these dogs are still here & we’re still using them in the same way today!
