Happy Halloween everyone! To keep your furry friends safe this Halloween season, check out the pet safety tips below!

29/10/2021

Not a week goes by where I don't have to reassure a concerned dog owner their dog's social behaviour at the park is 100% NORMAL!

It's so strange the way we expect our dogs to go to the park, meet 5-10 random dogs, and get along with them all perfectly.

Me? I hate going to nightclubs. I'd rather have coffee with one or two friends, or maybe a walk. Maybe you're the opposite and love going to crowded pubs and making new friends! Neither of us are 'abnormal'. Ok ok, maybe I am - sometimes I take a book to the pub to sit quietly and enjoy my craft brew...

So the sooner we all realise that our dogs have personalities too, the sooner we can stop creating goals for our dogs that they'll never enjoy.

If your dog is aggressive or nervous around other dogs, it's totally reasonable to have a goal to get them to walk past another dog on leash at say 5m distance. It's not a reasonable goal to expect them to enjoy playing with random dogs at the dog park!

As humans, we rarely stop to chat to folks on the street, unless we know them. Somehow this idea goes out the window with dogs, and there's this weird expectation to meet every single other dog on a walk! That's pretty stressful.

Most people want want their dogs to cope with the fair expectations of living safely in our community - to be neutrally social and robust. So let's set some fair expectations:

🐩🐕 Think about your dog's play style. Different breeds play differently! Eg herding, wrestling, body slamming, chasing...

🐕‍🦺🦮 Find a couple of well matched doggy friends for your dog, and let them play in low traffic locations (eg someone's backyard, a secluded park) to enjoy play time.

👋 Set the expectation early that not all dogs are there for play! Teach your puppy that most dogs you meet on the street aren't relevant to them.

🤚Advocate for your dog in play. Don't allow dogs to 'sort it out', or for your dog to bully or be bullied.

🤷‍♀️ Avoid dog parks. Sorry folks, these places generally suck for fair, beneficial and harmonious play.

Happy playing!

🎭Welcome to the world of animal Acting!
With over 600,000 animals employed each year, there is constantly a demand for fresh faces. Every animal that you see on a TV or movie production is an animal actor, even if they appear to be doing normal animal behaviors.

🎭What is an Animal Actor?
An animal actor can be a model in a print shoot, an actor in a movie or commercial, or a performer in a live show.

🎭Why does an Animal Actor need certification?
Movie productions and other film and photography sets are expensive endeavors. Time is money on these sets, and a production company will not risk wasting time by hiring an animal that is ill-prepared for the job. Hiring an animal that has been vetted by a certified evaluator enables them to reduce risk and increase the liklihood of a quality performance. Regulatory agencies (Such as American Humane Association) require that animals on set be socialized and “trained and prepared in advance to perform the required action.”

🎭How does an Animal Actor get certified?
AAAI is the global certifying body for Animal Actors. Your animal’s level card credentials him or her to be on various types of sets by vouching for their stability and relevant training. Earn a certification card by submitting the items on each level’s checklist (live or via video) to an Animal Actor Certified Evaluator (AACE). A list of AACEs can be found on domorewithyourdog.com. You may submit to a AACE via video through one of our free Facebook Spark Team groups.

🎭Does my animal get a certification card?
With your Level 1 certification your animal will receive a display certificate and his “black card.” Each metal card can be inserted into to the certificate slots. For each additional level the animal will receive the corresponding metal card, but no additional certificate.

🎭How does an Animal Actor get a job?
Animal acting agencies train and supply animals for acting jobs. Agencies typically kennel a few dozen of their own animals, and rely upon private party animals for additional species, breeds, and skills which their kennel cannot supply. A production company will reach out to the agency with specifc requests; either by look or by talent. Next will sometimes be a “go see”. Several animal actors will be sent to this audition to display for the casting director. The animal may be paid about USD$50 for this audition.
When an animal is hired, it is paid a daily wage (approximately USD$50 to USD$350). Unlike human actors, animals do not receive residuals. They are considered moving props and are paid only a one-time fee. If there are specific behaviors that the animal needs to learn, it may be paid half-wage for each training day.

🎭What is expected of an Animal Actor on set?
Every job is different but typically an animal will be required on location for a full day, even if his role takes only a short time. The animal is usually transported and handled by a professional set trainer hired by the animal acting agency. If the animal’s owner is a capable set trainer, they may possibly be hired for this job (paid approximately USD$50/hr.)

🎭Should I be concerned about sending my animal with a set trainer?
Every big production will have an animal welfare advocate on set (such as American Humane Association). These agencies are responsible for movie claims such as “No Animals Were Harmed in the Making of This Film.” These agencies check that animals are exercised, climate-controlled, and treated with strictly positive interactions on set. In the overwhelming majority of cases almost every person on set is tickled to be working with an animal and goes out of their way to look out for the animal’s wellbeing.

🎭Which species can be certified as an Animal Actor?
Within reason, any animal should be certified before being hired on set. The level criterea is general enough that it can be adapted for most animals. The certified evaluator is trained to evaluate each animal as is relevant to their potential job.

🎭How do I learn the skills to teach my animal?
Animal Actor Certified Evaluators (AACEs) are versed in the skills and can help you train your animal. Some AACEs offer free Facebook Spark Team groups to assist you. Find these teams on domorewithyourdog.com

I cannot share this photo enough.

A friendly dog is one that knows how to relax when greeting new people and dogs. A friendly dog has manners. A friendly dog doesn’t push into the face of other dogs. A friendly dog doesn’t make dogs play with them. A friendly dog will softly approach another dogs personal space bubble and ask politely if the other dog would like to play.

EXCITEMENT DOES NOT = happy or friendly. It is a competitive or overstimulated state of mind.

Excitement will 90% of time push new dogs to defend themselves if rushed up to with this energy.

Anxious energy will 90% of the time put other dogs on edge.

Dogs do not say hi by going face to face. That is a challenge for rank position. Aka “play”.

Some dogs will choose panic in defense drive of (kill or be killed) fight or flight. Other dogs enjoy being pushed around and will “play” right away. And others will choose to correct the dog for being without care for other dogs boundaries.

Pushing up to others personal space is considered rude and disrespectful. If a dog is not having respect for the other dogs personal space at first greet, then then the chances of conflict increases.

Show your dogs to relax when they see dogs. Show them how to approach other dogs ONLY if you lead them there or to approach in a relaxed fashion. This leads to all dogs involved feeling safe which leads to safe hierarchy game.

Wild Fire season is officially started and really off to quite the start.

Evacuations can come suddenly and have to be done quickly. To make things a bit easier emergency kits for your family and pets could help you stay relatively organized.

Muzzle training your canines could prove useful especially now as dogs can react very differently under stress and high emotion.

Be sure to stay up to date on Wild Fire news, Here's the BC interactive map that's updated a few times a day

Do NOT smash a window if you see a dog left in a car.

Smashing a window can lead to stressing the dog out further, you hurt, the dog bolting and running away or worse, into traffic, you could even end up bit.

You can actually be charged for smashing a window. Call the SPCA, Animal Control or RCMP/Police to come aid the animal.

Canada Day is coming up and what does that mean for your 4 legged friend? Fireworks 🎇🎆

Unfortunately, Fireworks are a thing that just never seem to disappear and a lot of pet owners are upset over as it may cause their dog or cat unnecessary stress/fear.

Don't lose hope. There's a few things you can do to help your pets desensitized to the sound.

My number 1 reccomended path to go is to play the sound of Fireworks at a low volume in home. Giving your pet treats after every noise at first then after every few and so forth. As your dog shows they are relaxed and unphased, increase the volume a bit. Your goal is to have your pet associate the sound of the Fireworks with treats and positive things.

My favourite sound track for this is;

____

Remember to keep your pet secured indoors and to have their Microchip/Tattoo up to date.

Frozen Stuffed Kongs and other rewarding chews can help distract and keep your pet busy during the celebration.

Providing a safe spot like a comfy crate or room will help your pet feel more secure.

You can also use your TV or radio to create extra noise to drown out the loud bangs and other upsetting noises from outside.

Some people like to use thunder shirts and other gear to help.
____

If your dog is violent, absolutely terrified to the point that nothing you do is working or putting themselves at extreme measures at the sounds, Please reach out to a local, licensed, balanced behaviouralist to help.

Let's make Canada Day a little less stressful on you and your pets!

The animals hold "social rallies" and choose when to hunt via a sneezing ballot, a study finds.
