Make way for Mammoth!

This big guy is hard to miss and had a stubborn streak to match. Mammoth came into training knowing how to use his weight to his advantage to avoid doing what was asked of him. With patience and practice he has learned to follow through with our expectations rather than push against them. In return, he is enjoying the freedom that comes along with the structure we have taught him. We look forward to his owners enjoying their time with him without worrying about how to manage this sweet but massive floof. It will take continued consistency at home to have clear communication with him. Mammoth and his family will now have the tools to have a greater quality of life together.

It's Mikey's way or the highway - or so he would like to think...

Mikey is a fun, goofy dog but he can be a lot to handle.  He was clearly used to getting his way and wether it came to walking on a leash, getting his nails trimmed, or being left alone at home, he was willing to put up a fight to get what he wanted (or get out of something he didn't want to do).  We're helping to teach him some better manners and how to have an "off switch" so that he and his owners are able to truly enjoy each other's company and have a healthy, happy relationship.  This will definitely mean some new boundaries being set at home, but the freedom that's earned as a result will be well worth it!

Many people are ✨shocked✨ to see that my dogs aren’t super dog-friendly. They’re a dog trainer’s dog, how can they be so mean?

“Mean” because they don’t run up to other dogs, mean because they aren’t dying to meet your dog, mean because they don’t tolerate inappropriate behavior..

To me, they’re an example of dogs with healthy boundaries and relationships to others. It seems to be the “norm” for a lot of dog owners to expect other dogs to tolerate all of their own dog’s behavior. If your child was being harassed by another child, would you tell them to tolerate it? Of course not; we would intervene and the same should be happening for our dogs.

Any inappropriate behavior (posturing, face licking, jumping, excessive sniffing), or really any behavior that makes the receiving dog uncomfortable, should be interrupted or punished.

This can happen in two ways: we intervene which is the preferred method. If your puppy is face-licking your older dog and your older dog isn’t enjoying it/is trying to get away, etc, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to remove the puppy from the older dog. We should not except any dog to tolerate annoying behavior and we certainly don’t want to raise our puppies to continue this. Or if your male dog is excessively sniffing a female dog to the point she’s uncomfortable, you can interrupt or punish that with a “no,” a nick on the ecollar, separating them, etc. It is your responsibility to manage your own dog and advocate for others.

The other option is to allow the receiving dog to correct the inappropriate dog, but this is rarely efficient and should only happen under very strict circumstances. We never want to allow a dog we don’t know to correct our dog. There’s a good chance they won’t, which will teach tolerance, and there’s an equally good chance they will overcorrect, resulting in injury or fight.

Often a puppy is raised where other dogs are expected to tolerate behavior. One day the puppy runs up to a dog and starts behavior that they’ve rehearsed, the new dog doesn’t tolerate it and corrects the dog/starts a fight...

Introducing Duncan the Westie!

This little dude definitely has a mind of his own with a big stubborn streak.  He has just finished up the first week of his camp and train and it was painfully slow going in the beginning.  Thankfully after a LOT of patience and repetition he is starting to get the hang of this whole obedience thing.  Next we'll be working on building some impulse control and helping him learn that he doesn't need to chase everything that moves😂

Minus the stubborness, Duncan really is a fun dog.  His owners will definitely have to put in the work to build their quality of voice with him but once they do they'll be able to enjoy their time with him even more knowing they have the ability to effectively communicate with him!

Meet Rocky!
This handsome fella is finishing out our 3 week Camp and Train program. Rocky is young guy, about 7 months old. He is sweet but came into training quite shy and unsure of new things. He would often bark out of fear of new sounds or people. Rocky quickly picked up on basic obedience and our expectations. He has been visiting different public places and experiencing a variety of distractions. Through these public access trips he is learning to choose a calm mindset and focus on what we are doing rather than worry about what is going on around him. Rocky has come of his shell in these few weeks. He is more calm in new surroundings and situations. The fearful barking has diminished as well. Rocky still has a lot of growing to do. We look forward to his family using their new tools as he matures. It will be important to continue shaping a calm mindset at home as he gets older. Now they can be confident they have clear communication with him. Rocky’s family has many years of dog ownership ahead of them to enjoy!

Henri says “Just Smile!”
This happy guy is here for two weeks. Henri had some previous training, but he is here to develop a calmer mindset and find his “off” switch. He can be distracted easily when there is a lot of commotion around. We are working on solidifying his commands in these situations. Our goal is for Henri to choose calm over chaos. He is going on a lot of public access trips to work on impulse control. Henri loves to learn and is thriving with the structure and expectations we are teaching him. Henri’s owner would like to be more confident in his recall too so that is a big focus for him in his final week with us. We are looking forward to Henri and his family enjoying their lake house more by using our tools for clear communication.

Hi, name’s Axel!

He’s a whole lot of handsome puppy that’s going to be a big boy someday. Axel’s owners set him up for success with our Puppy 101 class before his 3-week Camp and Train. Axel is a social guy who loves to play with other dogs. But his barking, pulling and whining at distractions needed some help. Axel was eager to learn our expectations. His nuisance behaviors began to fall away as his learning progressed. Axel now understands how to have a calm mindset and be neutral to distractions. We are excited for his family to continue using their tools at home to clearly communicate with Axel. Now his owners can confidently walk him without being dragged around by their large breed dog. They are looking forward to off-leash freedom too. It will certainly make for a happier, healthier relationship as he matures!

Meet Lando!

This guy is one big goofball!  Full of playful energy but also a little on the nervous side if there's a lot going on around him.  He's finishing up our 3 week camp and train program and has come so far in the last few weeks!  When we started out he was not the most responsive to leash pressure or the e-collar, but with continued practice these tools are becoming a great way for us to communicate with Lando.  This last week we're getting him out for a lot of public access so he learns to be calm and confident and is neutral in a variety of environments.

Lando's a great dog that will be an amazing companion for years to come, especially now that he's learning he'll have to actually earn all the privileges and freedom he craves!

Introducing Sam!

Sam is super playful and affectionate but also has quite the fiesty side!  His owner would love to be able to include him in everyday activities such as walks around the city along with bigger adventures like camping trips🏕

While Sam flew through the basics of training, his biggest challenge has been his reactivity so we've been focused on doing a lot of public access. He's definitely a stubborn pup but he is settling in and learning to ignore all the distractions around him.

Once Sam's owners are confident using their new tools, they'll be able to go on all kinds of adventures knowing they have a reliable way to communicate with him.  We can't wait for them to be able to enjoy their life with their dog by their side!🐾

Hello from Odin!

Odin is just 6 months old and has all kinds of playful puppy energy! He's also quickly growing into a big pup (maybe faster than he realizes 😂) so it's becoming even more important that he learns some boundaries and isn't jumping on people, pulling on a leash, or busting out of doorways.

He's just over a week into his camp and train so we've been focused on his leash manners and obedience basics. As we progress, we'll be working on building more impulse control and developing a solid recall so he can enjoy all the freedom of an off-leash life.

It will definitely be important to stay on top of him, especially as he goes through his "teenage" phase and tries to test his limits, but we're so excited for him and his family to be able to enjoy each other and all the privileges he'll earn from his hard work!

Where would we be without all these crazy doodles to work with!?  Rex is your typical high energy, overexcited doodle who needed to learn some impulse control and how to have an off switch.  He is working his way through the third week of our camp and train program and has made so much progress in the last two weeks.  Even though he can be a complete spaz, he's a quick learner and flew through the basics of obedience.  Now we're focusing more on his mindset and impulse control - especially around people (he likes to jump) and going through doorways.  Walking past people or dogs out in public presents a huge challenge for him to stay focused so we'll be doing a lot of public exposure with him this last week.  Introducing some new tools for his owner to work with will allow them to build their quality of voice with Rex and have a way to enforce more boundaries at home which will ultimately lead to more freedom and a better quality of life for both of them!

Here’s Sebastian!
Sebby is equally as charming as he is big. He is with us for our a 3-week Camp and Train program and working his way into Week 2. Sebastian is very playful and friendly with other dogs and people. Given his size and level of excitement this has been problematic in the past. Our big goals are for him to safely walk on a leash – without pulling or dragging his owner down and to teach him to choose calm over excitement when presented with distractions. Sebastian is learning to remain calm and focused as we teach him our expectations and structure. We are looking forward to this sweet boy sharing a better quality of life with his owner when he returns home with new tools!

Meet Scout!

This handsome boy is working his way through the last week of our camp and train program.  He's a little on the timid side so we've been working on building up his confidence and getting him comfortable with the new tools we've introduced.  On the other hand he does get excited around people and has a history of jumping up to say hi so we've also been teaching him to have more impulse control in these situations.

Overall he seems to be a great companion and introducing these new tools and some more structure will allow both Scout and his family to build their confidence knowing they now have a clear way to communicate exactly what they need from him! 🐾
