Dogs are notoriously bad at pacing themselves, especially when they’re having fun, and can easily become overexerted. Because they don’t sweat, their temperature can spike quickly. It’s up to you to carefully watch your dog on hot days to prevent heatstroke. Exercise your dog in the morning or evening. If you must exercise him in the heat of the day, provide plenty of water and monitor him constantly, keeping him in the shade and taking him inside for breaks. Consider putting a kiddie pool in the yard so he can cool off.

It could be a matter of genetics - retrievers are generally more likely to fetch than other breed groups. Your dog could also have an aversion to the thing you’re tossing, so try changing up the toy to see if your dog finds a match. Your dog also might just be plain bored or uninterested by fetching. If so, don’t force it - try something else, including obstacle courses, scent challenges, or an extra-long walk.

This is an instinctual behaviour for dogs. Contrary to what it might look like, dogs aren’t trying to cover their waste with dirt and grass. Instead, they’re making their territory by using scent glands on their paws to release pheromones- it’s just another way for dogs to convey messages.

Sure, the upcoming May showers will bring flowers, but they’ll also bring thunder and lightning. If your dog is afraid of loud noises, there are a few things you can do to help her manage her fear. Giver her a small, indoor space to hide, like an interior bathroom or a crate. Swaddle her in a t-shirt or special thunder vest to make her feel secure. Despite how much you might want to, don’t pay her extra attention, as it may cement the behaviour and teach her that anxious behaviour results in a reward. If your dog’s response to thunder seems abnormal or dangerous, talk to your vet.

Put your phone away and head out for a walk with your dog. Watch how your dog pays attention to little details - smelling a blade of grass, enjoying a cool breeze, listening to the sound of another dog barking - and use all your senses to notice things about your environment, too. Everyone knows about sit and stay, but have you taught your dog touch? This command, in which your dogs comes to you and touches her nose to your hand, is incredibly helpful. Though it’s similar to come, it’s arguably easier for your dog to learn because it includes that tangible aspect of touching nose to hand. Teach it by holding out your hand with a treat and saying “touch,” then clicking or praising when your dog touches your hand. Repeat until your dog can complete a touch without a treat, and be sure to practice in different environments.
