What happens to your nervous system when your dog gets anxious, aggressive or overly excited? Do you match them or do you realize it’s the PERFECT opportunity to practice staying calm and confident yourself?
Curious what pack position your dog is? Knowing your dog’s born pack position can assist in your dog’s success socially, empowers you to have a fuller connection of communication, allows you to be more efficient and effective in training, and allows you to know what environments your dog thrives in and which ones are naturally more challenging.
Every pack position is needed and essential to the overall health and survival of the pack 🐾. No position is better than another, although we don’t want owners’ reinforced behavior to push a dog to become front of the pack with them (can occur often).
Front of the pack dogs help monitor the overall energy of the pack. They are the main teachers, leaders and tell other dogs to calm down when they are too high energy. The have the trust and respect of the pack to decide in the wild which direction to go for food, water and shelter. They set the pace, tone and rules for the pack.
Middle of the pack dogs looooove to play play play. They tend to greet all dogs and humans with the “hey friend!” attitude 🤗. Often most dog lovers assume every dog is middle of the pack and super friendly and playful but that’s not the case. However, most dogs in a litter ARE middle of the pack. They trust humans pretty easily and have a high tolerance for various levels touch and trying new things.
Back of the pack dogs are more sensitive as they can sense danger behind and around the pack and alert the front of the pack dogs. For this reason alone, back of the pack dogs make for great therapy dogs. They have more sensitive nervous systems so loud noises (dropping a book, door slam, etc.) will tend to startle them. Humans generally need to build and gain trust over time and showering them with too much affection too soon can make them uncomfortable.
