🥰
Everyone deserves a pleasurable walk.
I don't believe people set out on a walk to have a terrible time, however, I do know and I work with many people where there is an element of dread and worry every day.
I'm seeing a lot of videos posted by Bully owners at the minute showing how their dog is on a lead and minding their own business and another dog comes running over barking at them, because the off lead dog is either scared or trying to initiate play.
Now, sadly whilst the message is good from these people, the ex*****on of delivering the message for me often isn't helpful with a lot of swearing and peacocking about the " control" they have over thier dog, but I do whole heartedly agree with the core message.
For guardians who's dogs are scared, worried, or struggle with arousal and frustrations, a dog running over can be a nightmare and have long lasting emotional damage in some cases, they don't just get over it.
For people who have been bitten by a dog it can be traumatic seeing a dog run at you.
It's even more scary when you can see the person is unable to call their dog back or doesn't even try and starts with the excuses.
AND ITS ACTUALLY AGAINST THE LAW!
I don't believe in little robot dogs, but I do believe in responsible dog guardianship.
Whether in law your an owner or a temporary caregiver like a dog walker for example we all have our part to play.
I've experienced it myself, the " it's OK he is just nervous"....NO actually, its not OK he is off lead and nervous and shouting in my dogs faces.
"It's OK he is freindly".....No, its not OK, my dog doesn't like strangers invading his space, he wants to be left alone.
How would you feel walking through town and random strangers start coming up and shouting in your face IM SCARED, or hugging you......it would freak you out I'm sure!!
Now on the flip side, if you have a dog that you know struggles, be sensible, don't go to places where your will struggle.
Covering your dog in yellow anxious equipment and then taking them to a well known off lead dog areas or pubs is YOU setting your dog up to fail.
BUT....for the love of dog, be responsible, use longlines and work with a professional on your recall.
Hire secure fields if you want free running time for your dog.
BUT too many walks are ruined for ALL INVOLVED by poor human choices and its not OK to possibly traumatise a dog or person just to ensure your dog gets their off lead time and burns off the energy to give some peace and quiet.
Let's make good choices so everyone feels safe!
