Welcome to Episode 3 of !

For the first 6/7ish months of his life, Dennis only interacted with his littermate and had almost no exposure to other dogs. In fact, when he and his brother would see other dogs— even from a football field away— they would BLOW UP. You can imagine how they felt being in a classroom… but we had to try. They were puppies. Puppies are trainable, “it’ll just take time.” So we thought… but they never calmed down.

At first when I brought Dennis home, I did what I do with all new dogs: lots of crate time, out on a leash only, eventually a “look don’t touch” pen, among other things. He was initially super nervous, but I didn’t have time to ease him into things as much as I’d have liked, and pretty much right away began joining our Adventure Day Training groups. All of a sudden he was around a bunch of dogs in super close proximity and he simply had to deal. And he wasn’t all that bad when he was sort of forced into this uncomfortable but unavoidable situation. To this day, he has been around probably close to 100 different dogs in many different scenarios and he does pretty darn well for a recovering reactive.

He also lives with 6 dogs day to day— two tiny chihuahuas, a bulldog, a pug, a shepherd (his bestie), and a 15yr old fossil of a dog— a cat, and a guinea pig. He also sees our neighbors free-range chickens and barely bats an eyelash! So long as the greetings are done somewhat slowly, Dennis melds with everyone after proper intros, and can easily bounce back and forth between playing with my 5lb chihuahua pup, and my 80lb shepherd in the same 10minute span!

Dennis would love to share his space with another kind dog (or other species!). He doesn’t like to be bullied, and he deserves someone who will always advocate for him so that he doesn’t ever feel the need to defend himself. He’s ready to show off how amazing he is! If you or someone you know might be interested in adopting , please reach out! I’d love to have a conversation about your lifestyle and see if he wouldn’t fit in!

Menace Mondays Episode 2: His Villain Origin Story

Welcome to Episode 2 of ! 😈

When I met Dennis, he wasn’t Dennis. He was Brownie, a pretty regular dog name, but as I have come to learn, he is all but regular. So where did “Dennis” come from? Cue my employee Tori who happened to have met Dennis very early on in his journey…

I have this “thing” where I won’t name or change the name of any of my fosters because the few times I have, they didn’t leave!! And while “Brownie” was a fine name, I truly felt it didn’t fit this boy, so one day shortly after taking him in, I asked Tori, “Hey, if you were going to name him, what would it be?” Without hesitation she says, “Well, Dennis, obviously. Because Dennis the Menace!” And there his villain origin story began!

He IS a menace! He’s bouncy and boisterous and he gets into all sorts of trouble! He loves to chew and I’ve seen that boy chew through some things I didn’t think were even chewable… and yet here we are with a pile of Kong chunks and a shredded blanket!

But along with being a menace, Dennis is a love bug. He enjoys cuddling and sitting on the couch. He loves to be petted and melts in your hand at the first touch. No, he hasn’t graduated to having a dog bed in his crate yet, but this boy is a dream!

Aside from all of the things that make him a menace, Dennis is an average dog with average needs. He LOVES training with treats and can be taught new commands and tricks in minutes. He is a star off leash and will run laps around you at such high speeds that you’re not sure if it’s a dog or a missile shooting past you! He is house broken and crate trained and he happily runs to his crate any time I ask— so long as there’s a treat accompanying! As much as he can be a menace, he’s actually a really good boy.

Above all else, Dennis wants a human of his own, and while I truly enjoy spending time with him daily, I cannot provide for him what his very own person can: one on one attention and care! If you or someone you know might be interested in adopting , please reach out! I’d love to have a conversation about your lifestyle and see if he wouldn’t fit in!

Wow guys!! I am a proud dog trainer today!

On Saturday I met with three amazing owners/families that have been absolutely KILLING it!

One pup and handler that are just taking everything we have worked on to the next level. Their walks are improving, anxiety on both ends of the leash diminished, and now we’re on to really working on obedience commands and handling skills!

Another pup was experiencing anxiety and reactivity after a big life change, and though dad expressed his feelings of intimidation at starting the training process, we just finished 6 weeks of lessons and none of us could be happier! Anxiety is reduced, reactivity near nothing, and there’s a plan to keep on this path to success!

Yet another family with two pups that have been fighting inside their home, for the first time in months we were able to sit with both girls RELAXED in the same room. I received an update just yesterday that they’ve been able to replicate our session and achieve calmness on their own!

And lastly, but definitely not least, another pup who was bounced around to 4+ homes before she even turned 1yr old, has finally and truly begun to settle in with her forever family. From not knowing how to handle her, to the pup CHOOSING to go to “place” during dinner?!? If I wasn’t sent the photo evidence, I’m not sure I would have believed it!

What is the common denominator in each of these cases? OWNERS DEDICATED TO THE DOGS THEY COMMITTED TO. I cannot say it enough, what I do isn’t magic. Everyone can do it. It takes a lot of hard work, yes, but if we are honest with ourselves and we put our heads together, we can do it and we can do it WELL!

If you or someone you know is looking for true results, send them our way. From Adventure Day Training to Private Lessons to in-depth Board&Train programs, we have what you need and we won’t stop at anything to help you reach your goals!

Welcome to Menace Mondays! Episode 1: Who is Dennis?

Hey guys! Amy here, Owner and Head Trainer at BAD DOG CLUB! I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time, and having my current little foster pup has become the fuel to light the fire, so without further ado, I would like to welcome you to “Episode 1” of , a collection of stories where I hope to highlight the truly positive things about a little dog who almost “wasn’t.” A little dog who desperately needs a forever home where he can be the center of someone’s world!

I met (fka Brownie) as a not-yet-4-month-old puppy, alongside his littermate brother, as they walked in my doors for their first group class training. It was and still is one of the most memorable classes, because both Dennis and his brother never once took a calm breath inside those doors. The class was hectic, they couldn’t learn, and so we moved on to in-home private lessons instead. All was going “ok” until the phone call: He bit someone. 6 months old. Just a baby, but he was condemned to death.

It didn’t sit right with me, how could it? But it also never does. Yes. I’ve been here before. Many times. I’ve been back here again since, too, and I couldn’t do anything to help, but if I could do it for Dennis, then it would be worth it. So off I went. I loaded him into the BADVAN and we didn’t look back.

He was explosive. He was a mess. He couldn’t BREATHE. But we got to work, literally immediately, there was no time to waste. We went down to a park and watched some ball players and runners. He was explosive. He was a mess. Until I started actually asking his brain to work (I used to be one of the only other people that could handle Dennis; I’m happy to report today that I am one of many people who can handle him). Then, like a switch, a lightbulb went off and he realized if he listened to the little lady with the leash, food fell from the sky. And he LOVES food.

It took a lot of intention, but we worked solely on his reactivity while on-leash for months, and today he can walk in stores, down busy sidewalks and he even has earned off-leash time—he has an amazing recall. He has met strangers while out and about, made friends with many humans and dogs, and even does great around my cat (ignores her completely). He’s a total snuggle bug and he’s only getting better! So if you or someone you know might be interested in adopting Dennis the Menace, please reach out! I’d love to have a conversation about your lifestyle and see if he wouldn’t fit in!

In the coming weeks, I will be highlighting the things that make Dennis great, and why he deserves a home that will honor him for who he is. He’s ready for his true forever and we won’t stop until we find it!

What to do when your training session isn’t going to plan?!

⁃ Adjust expectations and ask yourself the following questions:

• “Does my dog understand what I am asking?”

• “Have I spent enough time teaching my dog this? Do they need more generalization work?”

• “Is my dog readily engaged with me or am I begging for their attention?”

Be fair to your dog & go into every session asking yourself if you have given your dog the tools to be able to succeed in that situation. Repetition and generalization will always be one of the most important ways to maintain consistent performance.

⁃ Be FUN! If your dog is more interested in what’s going on around them, chances are you might be boring them! Try tactics like playing keep away with a reward. Let them win and CELEBRATE their wins with them, even if they are small. They just gave you a good sit with no hesitation? THROW THEM A PARTY! Having a “victory lap” with them builds their drive for wanting to work with you. Be worthwhile for your dog! The victory is BOTH of yours, act like it!

⁃ Reset their body and mind 🧠 with a few treat tosses. We have nothing if we don’t have engagement. If they are REALLY stuck and unable to work through it- HELP THEM instead of letting them “check out” when they don’t get something immediately. While frustration is essential to the learning process, constant frustration and limited wins decreases your dogs drive to want to work with you.

Lastly, make sure that your dog is being SUCCESSFUL more often than not during their training sessions. That means actively being present and assessing the dog’s behavior in front of you and adjusting your training accordingly. This will boost your relationship and bring you another level of understanding of how your dog learns best.
