"Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food" - Hippocrates
Today's topic: DIET. Especially since the pandemic hit, we humans have begun to rediscover what it means to truly be healthy. Like our ancestors, we now know the incredible, undeniable power our food and nutrition holds in terms of our health. But...most of our dogs and pets are still eating the same mysteriously manufactured kibble sold in bulky bugs at the pet store. Over the last 10 years or so, a lot of great brands have stepped up to provide pet owners with fresh, nutritious food for our fur kids. Shout out to The Farmer's Dog & GetJoyfull who offer awesome, quality, and pretty affordable fresh meals for our pups!
Still, many of us don't understand the value in a fresh pet diet, or maybe the cost of that commercial kibble is still the only option that fits in the budget. Or maybe our vet discourages a fresh diet because it "doesn't guarantee your pet will get all the right nutrients he needs". Sadly, just like our human healthcare system, this industry does not profit off healthy animals.
Human-grade, high quality food will be the foundation of your pup's health.... just a few of these benefits include a healthier, shinier coat...more stamina on that morning run...better digestion...smaller, less stinky poops...reversal of some health conditions...even up to a 20% longer lifespan. That means better and MORE quality time with your best friend.
If you're trying to stick to a budget, a fresh DIY diet can even help save you money. A 30 lb bag of decent quality dog food will run you around $70-150 and depending on the size of your dog (or how many dogs you have hehe), that can really add up! Our favorite DIY recipe below costs about $15-20 per week. If you can't commit to a fully fresh diet, start by feeding half fresh, half high quality kibble!
Try out our recipe and comment a pic of your pooch gobbling it up below! You can substitute turkey for any high protein meat, rice for sweet potato, vegetables for cabbage and spinach...add parsley for fresh breath.... customize this recipe endlessly to give your pup some variety! You can even make it in bulk and pop it in the freezer in pre-portioned bags!
Just make sure to avoid the usual grapes, onions, raw garlic, avocado, seeds/pits.
